The bad (typically gun related) things happening in America thread

It's genuinely insane. Basically this woman arrives in El-Paso, calls an Uber and asks to be taken to a casino to meet her boyfriend. The regular route to this casino goes past a sign that says "Juarez, Mexico". Passing this sign led the woman to believe she was being driven over the border and kidnapped. Instead of verifying this she just pulled out her gun, shot the driver in the head and called her boyfriend. The driver later died.

And as we have been told in this thread, she should get off with no charges as she was probably genuinely afraid and so it does not matter if their was an actual risk, all that matters is feelings.

Just read on bbc about the not guilty verdict on the guy who lost his bottle in the previous attack.
I think it’s the correct verdict.
The whole system is fecked if it’s coming to this….
If the system doesn’t change then more an more innocent kids will die and there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth but the $ will win in the end.
I could have moved to the US a few years ago for a lot more dough but I have small kids and even if the chance of something happening to them at school is small I could never forgive myself if it did actually happen so I decided with the missus that we’d stay put.
Probably a lot of people thinking the same thing now…….. crazy thoughts when considering moving to a first world country

Lord knows I hate this shithole of a country, but honestly it is a fantastic place to raise kids if you have money. If you don’t then it’s basically a shithole.

I probably agree with that statement.
I understand probability (it’s part of my job) and I know a very small percentage chance multiplied by 10 ( or whatever the number is) is still a very small percentage, but the guns and the culture around personal protection was the big issue.
I fully appreciate its unscientific in terms of the chances that something bad happens and making life decisions off the back of that but it was the deciding factor, especially for my wife (who is not as mathematical when it comes to these types of decisions).
Again, it’s a shame, not for me and my situation (I’m sure we’ll be fine!) but for the poor kids in the US who leave school one day in a wooden box.

Been bobbing in and out of the trial (YNW Melly trial has been more gripping with drama and scummy prosecutors, the Peterson one is just sad all around) so i could be wrong but from what I saw it was unclear if he knew where the gunshots were from due to reverberation, he had a faulty radio and training / protocol was to hold position until you know the position of the shooter due to risk of friendly fire. A lot of the argument was he should have 'done something' which is more of an emotional appeal rather than a legal standard.

Other officers actually had intelligence and failed to share it with the guy even if they saw him face to face and they held position too but weren't charged.. this guy charged based on a novel argument about SROs having caregiving duties but obviously you cannot hold someone criminally liable if they lack the information to act at the time, which is what the jury found

Most likely a 17 year old edgelord in their mum's bssement

Just as likely to be someone serious. If you pay enough attention to different online communities someone saying that shouldn't surprise you.

My guess would be a lolbertarian if it's serious, but could be a constitutional conservative, or some strain of white nationalist, not that there isn't cross over between the groups

Sorry, but when I see a picture of a Roman statue with a handle like "Western Ideals forever" I assume it's an edgelord who has zero knowledge of life outside of 4chan and hating women.

Or it's someone stupid enough to think that the original ideals of the United States were that the federal government wouldn't interfere with state law issues and interference with that caused the war, and have become so brain rotten to think human rights are to be determined on a state by state basis.

I've seen people online genuinely try to reframe the civil war in those terms and the language was similar

The whole system is fecked and the internet isn't helping.

The fact you have Republicans supporting Russia says it all.

Go back 30 years......

I honestly can't see how it's going to end without violence or succession. The divide is so great, they are almost polar opposites and the divide only seems to be getting bigger.

The original ideals of the United States are incompatible with democracy.

Could have been bad. This is at Carowinds, an amusement park that is next on my list to go to...

But when I argued in favour of the death penalty for serious convictions proven beyond any measure of doubt, there were people who felt it should never be enforced under any circumstances.

What has that got to do with self defence? And yes, many many people think that it not the role of the state to meter out medieval punishment such as lopping hands off for theft or killing people for killing people.

Death toll raised to 5 in Philly. 2 children shot. What a country.
A two year old was shot ffs! You guys should get a grip. Fecking hell!

Conservatives love the fetus, hate the baby & the mother.

A two year old being shot means nothing to key political conservatives.

I met an American recently that pointed out, that conservatives protect the fetus only because it is the single vulnerable group that is entirely free to protect.

As Christians they could have the same kind of passion for protecting the poor, the homeless, the elderly, the sick, single mothers or whatever, but they would have to back it up with policy, which would cost money.

Giving birth in the US costs tons of money as well. It's a real money spinner, not letting people have abortions.

To be fair there are always sharks in the water around Florida. If I'm not mistaken it leads the world in shark attacks but since they don't usually involve Great Whites they don't get as much press.
Leads the US definitely. Can’t remember one slaloming through swimmers in waist deep water though.

What’s more interesting is this. At least five attacks…

Whatever else they are, they're definitely some strain of white nationalist. You don't get that attached to the southern cause without being a racist.
