The Americas Draft

I think I will do player profiles on Maspoli, Mascheroni and Ortiz, then.

Is that Willington?

I'd argue you need a full profile on Mascheroni and Ortiz, people should be familiar with Maspoli.

Checking your squad, most of them should be straightforward so no need to go into more detail.

In other drafts you may find it's still a good thing to have a few words on each player be it in the form of short profiles or as part of your OP. I often revert to those, particularly when a player may have many incarnations (which one are you playing and which skills and attributes they bring to the table, etc.). Otherwise you end up having to regurgitate much of it anyway answering questions so it's best to get it out of the way and focus discussions on what you want to discuss rather than answering peripheral enquiries.

Unless of course you don't want to be clear and would rather have all incarnations playing at the same time, which managers typically do with the likes of Paul Scholes or Bernd Schuster. I find it annoying, but the average voter seems to assume the one on the pitch is the one they like best, i.e. the combination of attributes which would work best, even if said player never displayed them at the same stage of their career.

Yep, Willington.

Good points, I hadn't even considered it really. I mean I know the versions of the players I want, but didn't consider it from the voter's perspective. I'm still learning the ropes with this drafting stuff. Good experience, though.

@Chesterlestreet there are ineligible players in that list, that were already picked by other managers, like Erico and Zizinho

Yep, sorry - deleted.

Proceed. All players from losing teams are available (but not picks #1 and #2 - the EAP format is still in place) - and all unpicked (and eligible) players are available too.

Two players to pick.

And, yeah - in case you missed it, Skizzo/Pat picked Andrade (Victor/Rodríguez/the nephew).

Grin has to go down as an 8 (possibly 9) on the "cheesy and clearly not very charming" scale. The 'tache on the other hand - is...well, it's pretty good. Not Grade A by any stretch, but solid - can't fault it.

Aye - you needed more 'tache power. Socrates is obviously unquestionable in terms of facial hair, as such, but no 'tache master.

Also - very pleased to see you've been promoted. Makes it easier for us - and you obviously deserved it. Well, I think you deserved it, anyway, based on what you've contributed in this draft.

Finally! I was quite surprised to see him hanging on the verge of promotion for so long, especially with today's system.
He has been a brilliant addition to the drafts, love his research

Agreed. The OP should be a live post where you can quickly access the story of a draft, like here. Add links to each game, winning team teamsheet, and that should be the standard.

I went for the Draft XI as I wasn't all that proud of my final side. Not my best draft side I'm afraid.

Still wondering how you convinced the rest that Pele and Maradona in the same side would work.

The system now is that if you get a certain amount of likes you can post in a limited fashion in the main forum. So at 5 likes I was able to make 5 posts per day in the main forum. as I increased up to 10 likes my post count in the main forum increased.

Thanks! I have to admit I have gotten addicted to this draft. Its an excuse to watch and rewatch a bunch of old matches and get into nostalgia!

But I have to disagree a bit with you saying Gambetta was not very charming. But all accounts he was very much the joker of the dressing room and well loved by teammates but I think @antohan can confirm better there

While we're on the subject of standards - and before we move on to the semis here - I'd like to hear what people think: New (or old school) format, what's yer take?

Has it worked? Is it an improvement? Should it be tweaked? And so forth.

The main changes are: 1) can't see results before voting and 2) can't change yer vote.

Also - what we've had in this draft from the onset (and which may be discussed) is: 1) no substitutions and 2) no tactical changes allowed in the first half (i.e. the first 12 hours of the match).

Still wondering how you convinced the rest that Pele and Maradona in the same side would work.

I don't think I even tried, other than being very clear it was '58 Pelé I was playing and not the '70 one.

That was such a shame, I did everything right in the drafting phase, took all the risks needed to get the side I wanted... and I ended up with the two GOATs, and everyone jealous and complaining I got them... except I didn't want them.

The way that draft worked you could only ever have one player from each country. The problem of course wasn't just the constraint but that if you picked Zanetti then when you came across Maradona you suddenly didn't have a right back!

The plan all along was not to pick any Argies/Brazilians in the first round, let everyone fill their boots while I prioritised getting the right players from other nations. In a nutshell:

Germany: picked Effenberg late so I could sub him with '66 Beckenbauer or Matthäus
Brazil: hoped for Romario, Ronaldo and Pelé (in that order)
Argentina: hoped for Messi, Di Stéfano and Maradona (in that order)

Others: Vidic and ideally Figueroa for Vasovic (some cnut stole Vidic from under my nose), and Best would be great as I only fancied Messi as a RW option from AR/BR

The idea was to put together something like this:

Ideal-XI-formation-tactics.png

Unfortunately back then you picked from your defeated rival so I didn't only have to beat both Pelé and Maradona (hard enough) but they weren't the players I really wanted so ended up with this:

I'm sure I wrote something on Gambetta at some point? Or at least posted that picture of him taking photos during training. That is, all the players in full training gear doing exercises, while he walked around with some extraordinarily big trousers on, shirt and beret carrying one of those massive tripod cameras and taking photos here and there. It's quite the sight, there's even a photo someone took of him taking the team photo

He was supposed to be going as a second sub, a player whose best years were already behind him, so when injuries required that he played against Sweden it isn't surprising he had a poor game, what's surprising is that he could take part in such an extraordinary defensive effort against Brazil as if he were an on form pro at the peak of his powers. You know what they say about form and class though.

Not seeing: works great

Can't change: a bummer, but not seeing adds more than this takes away. The only danger is people leaving their votes too late just in case so it's important we commit to choosing early and not fannying around too long when we know our minds won't change (which is the case 4/5 times).

No subs/only changing tactics halfway through: sounds good to me, we've seen managers get away with murder far too many times and, however much I like the clock and change logs (e.g. starting formation, changed after 30 mins of the 1H while 3-1 down) the fact is the cosmetics facelifts primarily help with scan voters who just don't give a shit or can be expected to contemplate clocks and whatnot.

Eliminating R1 and R2 from reinforcements: great idea FOR SNAKE DRAFTS

@RedTiger you might need to pick for your team here with the deadline approaching :)
Eh, I already decided on who to pick.

Is Sensini really the best rightback available? No criticism intended, just thinking how brutal the depth at fullback is.

I'm taking a different approach with right backs. Honestly, for me, it was either him or Dani Alves/Maicon. I didn't have much time for research today as I was quite busy with real life, so this is the best I could do.

After much debate on two different approaches I settled on my choice. Ultimately it was the early Bielsa then Sampaoli training that decided it for me as I wanted a little of that style and quality on the pitch.

If those were the options you probably made the right choice as what you needed was a more credible defensive fullback. It's the disparity I'm mulling over, it's quite clear that the pool has largely been split between fullbacks that attack and fullbacks that are defensively solid.

It makes me wonder why the likes of Giusti, Garré or José Herrera (in particular, being Pool 2) didn't get picked. They all offered a good balance between attack and defence. In fact, it's amazing Giusti didn't get picked at all (or did he?).

The new format resulted really tight reinforcement pool. We were lucky to land 2 out of our 3 top targets in each of the rounds, mainly because we needed a striker and AM in the first one and most teams were set there.

But that's the point right there: you can make your own reinforcement luck by drafting different.

Take the Reality draft, there was a round where EAP handed us a supposedly great midfielder and while others got the very best midfielders in the draft I wound up with Gerrard. What did I do? Desperately go out and pick a second tier #10? Nope, I just picked Gotze late on and rode my luck knowing come reinforcements nobody would need a #10 and there would be plenty to pick... so I ended up picking Nedved AND Baggio because everyone else was busy upgrading their leftback and whatnot
