The footwork of older keepers is usually absolutely shambolic.
From the relatively little I've watched I just don't see it. Fillol might be a standout but I've just seen nothing to suggest that the likes of Taffarel and Julio Cesar are inferior to the likes of Mazurkiewicz, Gilmar etc, never mind two tiers below.

I'm not sure but specific trainings for GK are a relatively recent thing.
I wonder if anyone here can shed any light on when goalkeeper coaches became a thing?
I'm not talking about distribution, I'm talking about footwork. Like Gio just pointed out, older keepers rarely move around in there area to close down an angle or move towards the trajectory of the shot. Even when the player is about to take the shot they are absolutely rooted to their spot like statues. It is pretty clear that they were never coached to move and make the save easier to make. Look at any random keeper now and that's a basic thing.well they rarely needed it to be fair. With the backpass rule, they would only need it for distribution, but that was also a bit obsolete, given that they usually played it short and the defenders took the ball out of their half.
Including other aspect like the sizes of goals. Used to be smaller goals earlier if I am not wrong.Would be interesting to read a proper history of GK training.
Yeah I agree with the coaching but that goes for any other position really in terms of time. The older keepers that are lauded as some of the best were pioneers in many aspects, besides footwork - positional sense, handling, early sweeper keepers also comes to mind. It's pretty hard to compare Yashin with Buffon for example and also the pace of the game back then is pretty different to what it is now.I'm not talking about distribution, I'm talking about footwork. Pretty much completely agree with Pat and Gio here, keeping techniques and coaching has come leaps and bounds and most of the footage of older keepers especially earlier than 50s-60s is really underwhelming. I know what lists Enigma is talking about and I won't take them as gospel in case of keepers. They surely deserve respect for being great among their peers but the likes of Carrizo/Zamora etc never struck me as anywhere near the current goalkeeping standard without even talking about the very best. It was probably 70s onwards when the goalkeeping standard really started to go up but it was still until pretty recently that keeper training got incredibly serious. Look at someone like De Gea right now, he has so much more in his arsenal than most of the top names that come up from yesteryears.
Having said that for the purpose of the draft we should consider their level in their own eras as that is fair to me.
The goalposts have changed tho.I don't remember all the details, but I'm pretty sure the dimensions have remained the same. The FA set the standards for length (first) and height during the 1860s.
8 yards (7.32m) x 8 feet (2.44m). Odd that it hasn't changed, you could say - but I don't think it has.
Furthering the point, Kahn and Schmeichel show how the demands of the position have changed even since the late 1990s.
There's general principle which we all vaguely abide by in considering players within their own era which helps for the purposes of any cross-generational draft.
But I'd also put forward that there are positional variations across eras, part due to quality, part due to different demands. For instance, you could argue that the 1980s and 1990s were a golden period for defenders - and that could be part down to quality and part down to the relative negativity of the game at the highest level. And today you could argue that we are in a golden period for slick-give-and-go midfielders, whereas the box-to-box machine is largely last generation's thing. So in terms of the draft, it's important to be able to justify how players, including goalkeepers, from different eras mesh into a cohesive system.
Shoot??? Really? Bad tasteless pun intended??
