Eusebio Ramón Tejera ("León del Maracaná" "El Cato") (6 January 1922 - 9 November 2002) was a Uruguayan footballer who played at Centre Back. From 1945 to 1950 he played for Club Nacional de Football, winning the Uruguayan championship in 1946, 47 and 50. He also earned 31 caps for the Uruguay national football team from 1945 to 1954. He was part of Uruguay's world cup winning team at the 1950 FIFA World Cup, and also participated in the 1954 FIFA World Cup where they finished third. He was big and tough defender, tireless fighter, physically strong and indomitable perseverance. From the beginning he had a special features: grit, toughness, sharpness and courage, virtues that were quickly brought him to fame. Versatile player of high quality. Popular "El Cato" launched a style of play "fly backs," which emphasized long and accurate passing from the back.

Yes, I was keen on him and almost chose him ahead of Pizarro if not for the Chilean's seamless fit into the team. Great steal at turn 11 though.
I believe I should watch some of his peak performances if you rate him that highly. One of my earlier football memories include him being tied in knots by Hagi at the 1994 WC.

@Mciahel Goodman

@BorisDeLeFora nice pick btw, he really should have been the keeper for Brazil in '82. That was one of Tele Santana's two biggest selection errors.

Yeah in all honesty there's that side of his game too. Worth expanding on in the match thread.

As a side note on V. Andrade (always an Andrade discussion to be had – and I'm sure both Senior and Junior will be discussed further when the matches kick off), I thought I'd mention this (which I mused on the other day).

In '50 Urugay's default setup was a fairly old fashioned variation on the Italian theme – the metodo, in other words – with Varela playing something like the Monti role, and with the inside forwards pulled back deep (Meazza style).

In this setup the wing-halves don't look conspicuously different, position wise, from their counterparts in various other 2-3-5 variations (they haven't become the central/defensive midfielders they are in more modern formations): In other words, position wise, V. Andrade would have started out, nominally, in roughly the same role his uncle had 20 years earlier.

However, by the time Uruguay faced Brazil in the “final” López (Uruguay's coach) had turned the metodo variation into something custom made and quite unusual: The inside forwards were pulled back even deeper than the Italian standard, as were the wing-halves – and he did something which looks strikingly modern to us: He had one of his fullbacks operate almost like a sweeper of sorts, with his partner working centrally – in front of this “sweeper” - as more of a “stopper”. With the deep-lying wing-halves (whose main task was to mark the Brazilian wingers) in place, the result was something which looks like a fairly straight back four (years before this became the standard) with two CBs and two (defensive) side backs.

And Andrade was, of course, precisely one of said wing-halves – and thus ended up playing much like a modern (defensive) fullback (left back, to be precise) in the famous “final” at Maracana.

What Brazil did in the course of the tournament, in terms of changing their basic tactical approach, is equally interesting – but that's another story.

Fernando Morena vs Flamengo. Great game with some excellent players on show and an impressive showing by Morena.

When I was digging into Jaime Pizarro, thought this would be worth sharing out - not to big up Pizarro but to show how heated the games between South American national sides got. This was part one of the infamous Chile-Brazil qualifiers for Italia '90. It was the second game in Brazil when the Chile keeper feigned getting struck by a firework that saw the match abandoned, a spate of lifetime bans and ultimately resulted in Chile being unable to compete in a World Cup until 1998. But the first match was a bit mental as well. A few highlights:
  • Romario getting a yellow card before the game even kicks off. He's normally too laid back if anything, so it shows how riled up everyone was getting.
  • The horror challenge on Branco I think at 1.16. It's disgusting and Romario gets sent off in the chaos that ensues
  • Some more ugly take-outs at 4.20, 6.38 and 6.53.
  • The comical own goal at 8.05
  • That Chile keeper making a great two-handed save three yards outside his box at 9.30
  • The penalty-box stramash at 10.00 and equaliser at 11.00: total bedlam

Ability

A fast and powerful striker, with a strong shot in both feet,[1] Ademir began his career as a left winger before moving to the centre, causing havoc in opposing defences with his skill and sublime finishing. People at the time considered him an unequalled ball juggler who knew every trick in the book. He used to wreak havoc among defences with his quick changes in tempo, fooling his opponents with deceptions carried out almost at lightning speed, his mastering of the ball in all situations and the ability to accelerate rapidly.

You're not the only one.

I think all the greatest players are here. However, some pool 2 players should be picked given their status.

I'm sure @Stobzilla is shocked by certain omissions. :D

I believe I should watch some of his peak performances if you rate him that highly. One of my earlier football memories include him being tied in knots by Hagi at the 1994 WC.
Yeah in all honesty there's that side of his game too. Worth expanding on in the match thread.

Hagi made a lot of people look a tit in that WC. Not least a midfield anchored by Jayvin's 1st Round Pick.

More the order in which people have been taken.

If I still get pelters for taking the best goalkeeper ever in the 2nd round of a Nations limit criteria draft then I expect @MounchesterUtd to be banned from this entire website for taking Chilavert in the 1st.

Yeah, the order is strange regarding some positions.

Some managers make a bet that some players are likely to be ignored so delay their picks.

Some have chosen some players for 'strategic considerations' (Pool 2 or 'philosophy') or because they are fan of.
