Tennis 2024

At the age of 21 - his feats are already absurd. I do hope we get another talent of around / close to his level to create another rivalry for the ages (Sinner?) but I don’t know if men’s tennis has had such an early bloomer since Borg? Phenomenal. What I like is that he’s an aggressive player too and not a baseline slogger.
Agreed on both there. Would be great to see him pushed by someone. He’s really a joy to watch… gives me some throwback vibes to the 90s with the way he plays sometimes.

The only other big time winner at such a young age I can think of since Borg is Michael Chang.

Sinner and Alcaraz are now 1 and 2 in the world respectively. Here's hoping to many great finals with them

Chang never won more than the one grand slam at 17.

Becker had four grand slam wins at the age of 22. That seems the most comparable.

Wilander had four slams by age 21.

Alcaraz seems to have a much more complete game across all surfaces which is what sets him apart from all the others at such an early age.

Wimbledon coming up without Djokovic and them being #1 and #2 seeds...

And both already looked far better than anyone else on grass back in 2022...

Didn’t know Djokovic was out of Wimbledon.

That’s an odd thing to say. I’m a huge Federer fan but why would that make my dislike Alcaraz? I’m not seeing the connection between different eras tbh. Do Maradona fans dislike Mbappe or something?
Same, big Federer fan but also a big fan of Alcaraz at the moment. He's great, entertaining, and a beast both physically and mentally. It's great that we have such a stud again (along with Sinner luckily) because it'd be barren times if the ATP needed to be carried by the likes of Zverev, Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Ruud, ... once Djokovic declines.

Already looking forward to Wimbledon now.

Nadal? He had 4 Roland Garros titles, a Wimbledon title and AO title at 22, the Wimbledon win being against Federer on top of his game and one of the best games of all-time.

My bad. For some reason I thought Nadal had 1 slam at age 21 whereas he had 3 - same as Alcaraz. He was actually comfortably the earliest bloomer out of the big 3.

Could've gotten his first Wimbledon win a lot earlier as well but lost 2 (or even 3?) consecutive finals against a sublime Federer dominating on grass in that period, which is something Alcaraz does not encounter at the moment. Sinner is great and all that but not not remotely close to prime Federer great of course.

Carlos has a wonderful opportunity to clean up some of these Slams over the next 3-4 odd years. While Sinner is very good, Novak seems check out of this year is anything to go by and the others, well, they're clowns in comparison. Only injuries, which he's had plenty, will stop Carlos in the near future. Can easily see Sinner also get to around 10 Slams by the time he's done.

Didn’t know Djokovic was out of Wimbledon.
I think most would be surprised if he plays. He's just had surgery and Wimbledon is in 20 days.

Can see him making an appearance at the Olympics, but Wimbledon is a hard ask. There's also a huge question mark on how he recovers from this. Him choosing to continue playing despite the injury probably made the situation worse than it needed to be.

Yeah, I'd be very surprised if he risked Wimbledon given the Olympic Gold is pretty the only trophy missing in his cabinet.

First ATP tour win for Jack Draper beating Berretini in Stuttgart.

Don't think Berretini is fully back to his 2022 level but he's getting close.

Draper with that lefty serve functioning could be a huge threat.

And now Jack Draper follows up his Stuttgart win by knocking Alcaraz out of Queens…

Take a bow lad.

That’s a shame, really. Is Nadal playing?

Wimbledon a week from now, it will be box office, so many players thinking they have a chance (rightfully, imho).
I think Nadal ruled it out a few weeks back. He said he was trying to be fit for the Olympics.

Djokovic is currently unknown as well. He's still hoping to be there.

Emma Raducanu through to the quarter-finals at Eastbourne, beating Jessica Pegula in three sets - the first time she’s ever beaten a top 10 player on the tour, and the first time she’s won after being a match point down. Looks like she’s finally back to something like her US Open form.

Boulter and Dart also through to the QFs. British women’s tennis is in a pretty good place heading into Wimbledon.

Raducanu looked like she was returning to form in the last couple of tournaments and has stayed injury free for what seems like the first time in 2 years. She's also back to her childhood coach Nick Cavaday which feels like the right move considering how many she's gone through.

She’s shown the level in a fair few matches against top players. Live rankings have her 55th for the year I think. Seems like the time to really push on.

luv her

I know nothing about her but I'd recommend punting on Sabalenka's opponent today. If Sabalenka withdraws from the tournament beforehand you get your money back and if Sabalenka steps to court, there's a good chance she won't be able to complete her match.

Murray out of Wimbledon singles this year. Was always going to be a stretch after his back surgery 10 days ago.

Alycia Parks has flashes of superstar brilliance sprinkled in so much inconsistency.

Not good seeing Rublev losing the plot again. It is getting worse.

It's bizarre how a guy, who, by all accounts (and from what I have seen in interviews,) is one of the nicest players on tour utterly loses the plot so often.

I think it is as simple as just putting himself under ridiculous amounts of pressure during games. As you say, he is one of the most likeable players off court and it's tough to watch him right now.

Ruud just giving it away in the 4th after coming back from 2-0 down and 5-2 in the third

Genuinely impressive match from Raducanu. Destroyed the world number 1 in doubles, who is also 32 in singles. Fingers crossed she can stay fit and keep up that level

This ones been a belter throughout, even with Berrettini definitely throwing away great chances in both the first two sets... he zoned in from the third, wasn't expecting that.

Probably one of the best matches I've watched live. Impressive from Sinner and that should he a real confidence boost for Berrettini
