Nadal was brilliant till he served for the match. Still a great well all around and good decision to pull out of Cinci as well.

I think the changes are better for fans as a whole but worse for fans who go and attend Davis Cup matches on a regular basis.

I like the restructured format as it means you keep a degree of the home/away ties but I think there will be more player commitment as it's less intensive.

It would also limit it to two surfaces. A problem now is players having to switch surfaces mid season and this at least reduces that risk.

The biggest problem though is a lack of unity between the various bodies and the timings.

Del Potro out. Wawrinka takes first set.

Nadal must be happy skipping this event.

The Umpire must be high because I heard the lady call it out and he just said 40-0.

First set to Djokovic. Looking decent at the moment. Apart from the baseball cap, which he seems to be unable to wear without looking like a sex criminal who is trying to hide his identity.

Feels like Fed has missed every single backhand-down-the-line, and he's trying them a lot.

My (rough) count:
3 srvice games for Goffin, points 12-1.
On Federer's serve: 12-5.
If Goffin's return is decent, he's winning the point. Fed's been relying totally on his serve itself. Groundstrokes not working so far.

Wins 7-6.

Improved a lot towards the end - forehand on fire and backhand not giving away free points.

Goffin retires at 6-7 1-1. He was playing decently too...

Djokovic would trample all over the Fed who started this match, but it's an even game if the improved Federer from later turns up.

Why would he trample? Djokovic has lost like 5 finals at the event. Federer hasn’t had his serve broken at Cincy since 2015. I’d say Fed is the slight favourite but it’s nice to see them playing each other.

Roger and Novak about to start.

Roger has been hit and miss. Did really well to come through against Stan. That was a fun match. Not sure what to expect tonight.

Wasn’t Cincy where Fed brought the SABR against Djokovic in 2015?, my memory is a bit hazy here.
Can't remember myself. All I remember about that final was Roger attacking attacking attacking and taking Novak apart. Think Novak didn't even have a break point.

Weird to think it's been so long since we got a Federer vs Djokovic match, shame Roger didn't get the chance to level the H2H in 2017 but oh well. Historically it's the most intriguing of all the current match ups for me but I think Djokovic has to be a strong favourite on current form, even with his poor Cincy finals record. Guess Fed might have his chances in tiebreaks if he serves well.

A good hold from Roger there.

Fed is going to have to start making some incursions into Novak's service games if he wants to take this to a 3rd set.

Roger gets the break and then gives it right back:rolleyes:

He's so anxious today.... definitely looks like Novak's title today.

Well played Novak. Best player in the world at the moment.

Fed is hanging in at 37 but I doubt he will last much longer.

From the reports, it appears Federer is back to his pre 2017 form in the amount of errors he's making. Given he's 37, it's quite worrying albiet understandable.

He was just rushing his shots because he knew he couldn’t hang with Djokovic if the rallys went on longer at his age. But he probably should have been a bit more patient.

He's just exhausted - played four matches in 48 hours, which at 37 was bound to catch up to him as soon as he faced a top opponent.

Djokovic was really, really good yesterday. Not as good as he could have been, I suspect, but then Federer didn’t really test him enough. He was able to keep Federer hitting the ball long enough to allow him to make a mistake. I would make him favourite for the US, fitness permitting.

As for Federer, it was quite similar to Wimbledon. He looked a little sluggish and the groundstrokes were shonky. How much of that was down to the scheduling demands and how much was down to a 37 year old trying to hold back time is hard to tell. My gut instinct is probably that the era of Federer 2.0 is probably over, in that it’s a struggle to see him regularly beating Nadal and Djokovic over 5 sets. Which would be a shame, but would be entirely logical given his age and how well those players are playing at the moment.
