It sucks that Rafa and Fed were ranked as they were. Murray has been anonymous this year while Fed has won 2 of 3 slams.

Smart money now would probably be on Cilic. Whoever make it out of the top half would have gone through some tough tough matches.
Cilic has got Simon in round one though, leads their H2H 5-1 and was the only guy to trouble Cilic in his 2014 run. Granted Simon's not great these days but Cilic hasn't played since his breakdown in the Wimbledon final.

Hewitt used to beat Fed all the time as well, I wouldnt put much weight into it. As long as he is fit I think he has a big chance. No real threat aside from Zverev on that side with Murray still struggling and the kid is yet proven to be able to endure the GS slog.

That injury really fecked Fed. He would have had Nadal's or Murray's draw instead.

There's no real smart money.

Cillic has been injured and has not played for two months nearly. Kyrgios was gaining confidence and probably lost it after losing his biggest match to Dimitrov. Federer has had back issues. I think Zverev will end up getting knocked out early. Moya is back coaching Nadal for the first time since the French and he needs to up his game. Murray has a good draw but he's had good draws all years and lost.

Murray pulls out of the USO. If he knew he's not going to play, he really should have done it before the draw. Anyway a poor season gets poorer. No Stan, Murray or Djoko.

The bottom half of the draw is an utter joke. Tsonga, Cilic and Ferrer

Murray just pulled out of the US Open and we have Fed and Nadal on the same side of the draw....frustrating all around..

Really poor from Murray this. He's not made this decision today so he should have just pulled out earlier and not messed up the draw. Anyway it's anyway a poor field, will be nice to have a new winner for a change.

Murray needs to rest. Just commit to taking some time off instead of pushing on in this condition. He's not 25 anymore and needs to take care of his body..

He's not only fecked up the draw. It means Fedal will play on the same day now. Feel sorry for the people who have tickets on the day when they aren't playing. If Murray pulled out earlier, atleast they'd have got to see one of them play.

Yeah guys who have tickets for days of the lower half of the draw aren't going to get any value for their money. Tsonga, Ferrer, Cilic and Zverev? That's piss poor.
Also, the obsession the world has with a Fedal final is nuts. That's not the reason to be pissed about Murray pulling out so late.

The draws are so messed up right now. Don't know who will be playing on Labor Day - when I'm going to the open. Got to watch Fed last time I was there and got a bit greedy and booked tickets sooner than I should have :|

No Murray, Djoko or Stan. He ought to be confident. He's the overwhelming favorite.

To be fair, Zverev is one of the very best players in the world right now, certainly better and more exciting than current Murray.

Good opportunity for the one of the young guys to make a name for themselves. I think Dominic Thiem could be that guy, only 23 and has huge weapons. The fast US courts should suit his play very well.

I doubt Thiem will do much outside clay. He is world class there, but disappointing in hardcourt so far. Including the draw Zverev has a better chance to go far.

Thiem has been very poor post RG so not expecting much from him at all.

Zverev in that half is the only thing that doesn't make it pretty much a 250/500 tournament level half of a draw  I somehow don't think he'll do well either though at the Slam. He's been underwhelming in the Slams so far despite his 2 Masters wins.

It's the consistency he's still struggling with, keeping his focus in key moments throughout the two weeks. Albeit, going out to Nadal after a 5 setter at AO is no shame and he can probably do better here.

Would be interesting to see how Nick fares. Hugely disappointing the way he lost Cincy.

Not really. He was simply outplayed on the day. Dimitrov's plan was perfect.

Cilic the big winner in all this, avoids Simon in the first round and inherits Murray's draw. And obviously the organisers and fans are the big losers. Really hope Rafa finds some kind of form or it really could be a terrible tournament.

I think he didnt play anywhere near his best on the day, especially the way he lost that break at the end of 2nd set.

Grigor played well, but Kyrgios wasn't quite up for it.
He couldn't play his game but that was mostly due to his opponent. Dimitrov's slice is incredibly effective at killing momentum. The way he did that, patiently, time and time again and made virtually no mistakes would've frustrated every player, to an extent, and made Kyrgios lose concentration at times.

Nadal hasn't been doing very well and Berdych and Dimitrov before Fed in the semis is a tough draw. Not sure if he's even going to make it that far so I see another Wimbledon/RG esque tournament. It's been a pretty poor year on the mens side really.

It was totally expected. He pumps himself up for the biggest matches but somehow can't put away the lesser players. I'd not be surprised if he beats Fed and then loses next match to some average player.

Yes, he lost concentration.

Contrast that performance to Miami, where he was rock solid on his serve. He should have stuck to his game and decide the match in TBs.

Zverev has a good chance of a grand slam very early in the career.

Also, why isn't the US OPEN being broadcast on Sky Sports? :annoyed:

It wasn't on Sky last year either. They're apparently giving up all tennis to Amazon (it's been on the cards since they launched their new channels and didn't bother having a tennis one). It seems like they've overspent so much on the Premier League that they're struggling to keep everything else. Arguably the 3 biggest events of the year from August onwards, barring the Premier League, that were traditionally on Sky were the US PGA, the US Open and the Ashes. They now don't have any of them.

Cilic looking far from convincing today. Got through the first two sets easily enough but has since run into a snag. Lost the third 3-6 and missing some excellent chances to break this 4th set.

Moving freely but lacking the placement in his shots.

You just have to despair reading this quote.

The £10m cost of a year of Amazon’s ATP tennis deal would buy it about 81 minutes of one match of the £11m per game Sky pays under its current deal.
