Tennis 2017

The Aussie mentality. Love for the laid back, easy life, bad influence from peers.

On pure talent I think he's better than these two. Easy to forget now but when he broke through in 2014 he was pulling off outrageous shots against players with much higher ranking, and were never fazed facing the top pros.

He has more talent in that he pulls of freaky shots more frequently than others and sometimes goes on stretches where he's unplayable for 10 points in a row (he's a bit like Monfils and Fognini in that regard, with a higher ceiling) and he has that great serve, but in terms of being able to consistently play technically perfect, smart and successful tennis I think he lacks in comparison to Zverev to whom this and a hard working mentality seem to come easily. Kyrgios is the more talented athlete, Zverev the more "talented" professional player, I'd say.

Wonder if Federer will skip Cincinnati now. He probably was waiting to see how well he was going to do in Montreal.

It's not like Indian wells and Miami as he took a 2 month break after that.

It was a pretty dull match... Backhand looked shaky but his serve was good in the second set. Very typical of Federer post-Indian Wells really, just doing enough to get the win.

If his serve was good, how come he couldn't hold on to his service game at all?

He got broken once in the second set but think he dropped one point on serve all second set until the tie-break. Are you just looking at the tie-break?

I was going off the commentary on LiveScore phone app. Apparently none of them managed to hold serve once in the 2nd

Ok good to hear. For a while there I thought he entered error mode again so close to the final.

Some good net play, very average backhand. That was what I got from the highlights. Serve wasn't under real pressure for most of the match.

Anyone actually watched Roger's match? I couldn't, read the LiveScore commentary just now and it looks mental
Watched the whole match. He seemed in a rush to get it over with. Did well to get the break and be 2-0 up in the 1st set, then lost his serve right away with couple of errors and a DF. Got the break back immediately and consolidated. From that on he seemed disinterested in breaking Haase and just held his to conserve energy.

2nd set was higher quality and again Federer didn't look to put in more than 60% effort. If Haase took the lead in his service game (which he usually did) didn't put much effort and waited for another chance.

Overall not very entertaining match just got the job done.

No way. He loves that tournament and won't skip it and will play to win it. He has played just over 5 hrs so far at Montreal. No way fatigue is in the picture. He looks more rusty for not playing couple of weeks rather than tired tbh.

Would be a big ask for Fed to play in Cincy since it literally starts the next day after Montreal ends. Better for him to spend the next couple of weeks resting before the Open.

Think he won't play immediately, so it's a couple of days rest.

If he's fit, he's going for it. I would of course prefer him skipping Montreal, but the wine is spilled now. Small chance he skips Cincy.

He'll most likely play on Wednesday - good 2 days rest and even if he goes deep or win it he'll have extra week/10 days rest before the USO starts.

Federer stayed on court on average for 1 hour or so in his 4 matches. Even the 3 setter against Ferrer was rather quick - under 2 hrs. IW/Miami were more gruesome(especially Miami where he played couple of very tight matches back to back) and still he straight setted rather easily Nadal in the final.

Besides in this depleted field he can vulture them all - including the USO.

Thoroughly enjoying these two go at it. Could be the future of the men's game for the next decade.

Amazing final game - some sparks of quality but great drama, and Zverev wins.

Huge props to Denis. Only caught the last few games but kept refusing to die by the end. Colour me sold.

Hope the final is more competitive than Halle.

Zverev cleary the better player so far. Federer hasn't looked too sharp on serve all week, either.

Looks like Federer might be carrying an injury. Hopefully not the back again...

Congrats to Zverev. Excellent from him today, particularly in the first set.

Second Masters 1000 for him this year.
