If Zverev wins this I think he'll win the Open.

That's a bold statement considering he hasn't even made a quarters of a slam. That should be his main objective and then take it from there. Federer rightly is favourite. I don't think he'd be that giving in a slam. Something was off about him. Petchey was saying he may have had a back issue.

Everyone was hyping up Zverev as a threat when he destroyed Novak after Rome. He ended up losing to Verdasco in the first round at the french. Then you got someone like a Cillic who will be a threat if he is fit. It's very open if Federer isn't 100%.

There's no incremental rule about how to progress to winning a slam. Becker won Wimbledon at 17, as did Chang with the French. Neither had any substantial pro experience going in.

Federer was completely off today, either through exhaustion, injury, or some bug he may have caught. Otherwise he would've made a bigger match of it. Zverev is not yet the finished article but he is definitely showing a lot of future potential and 20 is certainly by no means too young to win a major.

Something was definitely off about Fed today, I don't know if it's injury but it's concerning.

He hasn't shown the improvement palpable from Stuttgart -> Halle this time around, wildly varying level match on match. Hope we see something more reassuring in Cincy.

I like the look of Zverev. Having an attacking young player rise is just what tennis needs.

I'm worried by Federer's fitness though. His movement was clearly off in the second set. I've read that it could be his back again. He needs to be fully fit for the US open. It's a big chance for him given the way he's been playing this year. I've feared an injury for awhile given his age.

If it's a back injury then very unlikely it'd heal completely in two weeks.

I wouldnt jump to conclusion yet, he made no mention of an injury throughout the week. Let's hope for the best.

Well done to Zverev, he played very maturely and was generally close to his best level I've seen him yet.

2 MS at this age and beating Novak and Federer on the way is very solid statement.

Federer withdraws from Cincy so Nadal become world no.1 next Monday.

So his decision to not skip Montreal didn't work out. He looked out of sorts all tournament and robbed himself of a chance to win at the faster Cincy.
I hope he can sort out whatever was wrong. Probably the back, he's been serving horribly all tournament long compared to Wimbledon and Halle.

Playing four weeks out of five was never going to work out, hopefully a fortnight is long enough to recover but based on his previous spells with back problems I doubt it.

Yep, at 36 he should be playing very sparingly between slams. Absolutely zero justification to attempt to play both Montreal and Cincy, and given what happened, he should've probably skipped Montreal as well as it wouldn't have much bearing on his US Open seeding.

Fed was out a couple of days this week partying. Not sure that's the most professional/smart thing to do when you're playing a match every other day. So maybe that's why he looked below par all week.
Don't really care about tennis rankings but it's good to see Nadal at the Top just as a recognition of how far he's come from the dark days of last season.

Sharapova awarded a main draw wild card at the US open. Not sure she'd make it far given her recent injury issues

Really shitty time in terms of injuries. Just seems everyone in the top 10 is injured besides Nadal and Zverev. The latter should probably rest as he's had a good two weeks. But he's playing doubles which I don't think is a wise decision.

Big tournament for Nadal.

Zverev out against Tiafoe. Think Tiafoe can become a solid tour player if he keeps progressing.

Foolish of Zverev playing doubles.

But it was always going to be tough after winning Washington and Montreal to do anything here.

Didn't realise he was playing doubles as well. Does sound like too much over the past few weeks, but hope be keeps the doubles up to help improve his net game.

If Nadal cannot win this then he's got no chance at the open. The only real threat you suspect is Kyrgios and we don't know what version of him will show up.

Agreed, though I think Rafa has only won Cincy once, but with this field, he should really clean up.

Any idea what round he can play Kyrgios? Don't remember seeing him in the predicted draw.

He has a big game but don't really see anything special in him. Bound to create an upset once in a while when he's on.

Next round (Quarters), which could be late tonight as their third round matches were postponed from yesterday due to rain.

Aye, was hoping to see the result as I woke up this morning. Fair to say I didn't think the rain would have such an impact. Somewhat makes it more of a level playing field the matches getting played at the same time (even if the Kyrgios match started)

Kyrgios dominating so far. Nadal just doing the routine standing deeper and deeper.

Nadal breaks and then gets broken.

He really needs to get Moya to more events as he hasn't been with him since the French.

Big blow for Kyrgios. As you expect the way he was playing this week he should be winning the tournament but he's lost his biggest match to Dimitrov. I suspect a early round US open loss now.

Nick would have probably won if this were up against Fed/Nadal/Djoko. The way he threw away the game at 5-5 was mental.

Good performance from Dimitrov. Hopefully both those guys go deep in New York, you'd think Dimitrov will likely never get a better chance at winning one with Federer probably out of contention and Nadal struggling on top of the other top guys missing it. Which means he'll probably lose in the first round to some bang average player.

Usually he does OK when winning a tournament before a slam. Wimbledon 2014, AO 2017 . Confidence player. But, it must be said, he was flawless in today's final, bar a number of typical DF.

Fun fact: The last 105 tournaments in the categories Majors, Masters 1000 and Year End Finals have been won by Europeans.

so Raonic, Nishi, DJokovic and Stan will miss the US Open and Murray looks half fit.

1. Federer
2. Cilic and Zverev
3. Berdych and Nick

my personal favorites. probably last chance for Berdych to win GS, so I expect something similar to his performances from Wimbledon.

Agree with most, but I'd add Dimitrov to tier 3 and put a big question mark behind Cilic since he hasn't played since Wimbledon.

It's very draw dependent, Rafa could do with a 2013-esque draw and Zverev needs a cakewalk til the quarters or semis otherwise his stamina issues will be a factor. Federer's probably hoping for a couple of walkovers in the first week.

With this latest back injury I don't think Roger is the strong favourite any longer, Evert made a good point about the heat being a factor and he might lack match rhythm as well after missing out on Cincy.

It all depends on the draws as well but the field is open for one of the young guns to make a big impression. Nadal if he shows up playing like he did at Montreal and Cincy might not even make the 2nd week.

Bit of a nightmare draw for Federer, Kyrgios in R4 is as far as I'm expecting him to go. Rafa should make the quarters even in his current form but if Dimitrov gets that far he's in trouble.

Murray's draw is just a joke... Five more points and it could have been Federer's. :(

Halep vs Sharapova in R1.

Projected draws for the top 4 seeds.
Nadal (1):
R1: Lajovic
R2: Daniel
R3: Gasquet
R4: Berdych
QF: Dimitrov
SF: Federer
F: Murray

Murray (2):
R1: Sandgren
R2: Mayer/Dutra Silva
R3: Schwartzman
R4: Pouille
QF: Tsonga
SF: Zverev
F: Nadal/Federer

Federer (3):
1R: Tiafoe
2R: Kavcic/Youzhny
3R: Lopez/Verdasco
4R:Kyrgios/Querrey
QF: Thiem/Del Po
SF: Nadal
F: Murray

Zverev (4):
R1: Q
R2: Coric
R3: Anderson
R4: Sock
QF: Cilic
SF: Murray
F: Federer/Nadal

Smart money now would probably be on Cilic. Whoever make it out of the top half would have gone through some tough tough matches.
