Ridiculous tennis between Nadal and Lajovic. What a rally

Maybe I was overestimating Rafa when I thought he'd be competitive at the USO :nervous:

Much better since that ugly first set. Up a break in the 3rd as well. Lajovic just smashes the ball so hard

Nadal serving better.

But that was the perfect opponent for him. A journeyman who was not going to do any damage.

Solid enough from Rafa, with a little help from the net cord and Lajovic getting nervous. Don't think his matches will be particularly interesting til the quarters. Even with the roof on Arthur Ashe looked pretty slow... Felt like Cincinnati was as well. Did the USTA think the Australian Open was too exciting?

That felt slow? Maybe I don't watch enough hard court because the game felt super fast  Like something on a PC game.

Not watching but first set to Tiafoe. Anyone watching? Still expect Fed to take in 4.

Yes....Fed basically got broken right out the gates and was forced to play catch up the rest of the set, which was served out a 6-4 win.

I'm watching off and on.
First set Fed resembled that imposter who was destroyed by Zverev in Montreal. Slightly better in the 2nd but mostly relying on his 1st serve aces/winners. Many many UEs.

Far more comfortable and less error-prone after getting his 1st break in the 2nd, and now Tiafoe accumulating missed shots.

My stream died after he lost his 1st match point. Decided to spare myself the nerves.

I probably saw about a third of the games. Apart from 2 ~20 minute stretches I thought he was ok, Tiafoe was very good apart from his own pair of 20 minute collapses. 5th set they seemed to both move up a level.

Fed isn't match fit this match and it showed. Backhand into net mode back on for the large part of the match.

Considering Tiafoe is in fine fettle after beating Sascha at Cincy, it's just about acceptable. Not going to got easier though. His draw isn't exactly one where he can gradually works himself into form.

Not surprised that Roger had his hands full with Tiafoe. The kid beat Zverev at the Cinncy Open and played great tennis. Expecting great things from him in the future.

Phew, that was tense. I knew Tiafoe woulod be a really bad first round matchup. Lets hope Federer can gradually find more form.

Watched some 'highlights' of Federer's game and he looks really, really sluggish. I noticed a few comparisons to the Aussie Open of this year, but right now I'd say he's not even at that level. It'll be interesting to see if - and this assumes that he's physically recovered, albeit struggling for sharpness - he's able to play himself into form over the course of the week. I think he might be very vulnerable in the next few matches, if he makes it that far.

What's going for him though is that there really is no great compeition. Nick is the only one who can potentially beat him but I don't trust him to get to the 4th Round at all.

He was better at Indian Wells and Miami, but his AO form for me was better than his grass season, and much better than Montreal. If he recovers to the level which saw him beat Nadal, Wawrinka, Nishikori albeit with some bad sets (thrashing Berdych and Zverev's brother) he will probably win the US open.

The only real concern for me is the state of his back. I'm ok with him being rusty in the first few matches as long as he manages to get through them; the rustiness should go away if he manages to make it to the second week. Unfortunately, rustiness may go away but a back injury definitely won't. Federer's first serve percentage was much, much closer to Montréal than Wimbledon, which worries me in that it makes me feel that he is still injured. Only time will tell however.

Youzhny and Lopez/Verdasco are about as tough as it gets in R2/3.

He has nothing going for him with this draw.

I just saw Fed's H2H with Krygios, after remembering that amazingly tough match at Miami (his closest win of the year). They have played 2 matches, 6 sets, all tiebreaks, winning 3 each!

He'll beat those two with ease. Verdasco is another one who probably won't even make R3.
He just scraped by Tiafoe in 5.

Nothing is guaranteed with his current form. Give him Cilic's draw then you have something to worry about, with this one even if he makes the quarter/semi it'd be a small miracle he has anything left in the tank.

Nick Kyrgios is a bloody joke. His attitude just stinks. He's 2 sets to 1 and a break down. He's just throwing away games here. He was the only one I think who would have genuinely maybe been able to put Fed out but he's heading out now.
