Del Potro looked like he didn't want to be there despite his opponents best attempts to get him back in the match.
As well as Nishikori losing, Thiem has lost as well. If it wasn't for Federer and Nadal this season, the ATP Tour would be in a fairly poor state.Del Potro has had a horrible season which is a shame and suprising considering how well he played last year. Also, Nishikori must be one of the biggest bottle jobs in the history of the sport. It's unbelievable how many matches he loses from the verge of winning.
It's been the poorest season in terms of overall standards in years. I'm happy for Nadal because he's doing well but it does take away from the fun of it all when everyone is just so poor.As well as Nishikori losing, Thiem has lost as well. To go from the era of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic to an era which has such a lack of contenders is so improbable once you think of it. Three of the greatest male tennis players in history followed by an era which could well be one of the weakest eras in GS history i.e. since circa 1968.It's been the poorest season in terms of overall standards in years. Same pool with 13-15 really. 13-17 so far has been a bit like 98-02 - transitional generation with the new faces (Dimitrov, Raonic, Nishikori, etc) failing to make the grade and step up.To go from the era of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic to an era which has such a lack of contenders is so improbable once you think of it. Fed broke first game of the 2nd set.
The obligatory poor game once in a while at his age. Not too worried. Then broken and broke back again. Leads 4-2. Looks off, his timing especially and also movement.

I said it'd be a shock for him to go out, but also it wouldn't bother me one bit. Better lose early a warm up tournament he hasn't done well in for years than running out of steam at USO with the depleted field currently.
Yeah of course mate. USO is priority but I'd like him to get that #1 spot as early as after Cincy. He has a genuine chance and in an already depleted field in those tournaments.
I also remember one of his interview earlier this week saying that the windy condition there isn't ideal. More of a hit and hope scenario which probably suits Ferrer.
Anyway, 2-0 up in last set.
Really fun match, though I guess it will be over soon.
Shapovalov has an awesome forehand.
Nadal out. That was abysmal by him and I can't see him stopping Fed or even others after that sort of performance.
Give the kid his due. Dennis played really well.Nadal out. That was abysmal by him and I can't see him stopping Fed or even others after that sort of performance.
To be fair it's not like Fed was brilliant against Ferrer either.Nadal out. That was abysmal by him and I can't see him stopping Fed or even others after that sort of performance.
Aye he played really well. What shocked me was his net game tho - truly awful. Not sure if it is the occasion or just like the other younger players that part of the game is missing.Give the kid his due. Dennis played really well.
This is also why I don't rate Nadal's chance as highly going into the NA hard court season. Fizzling out as is his wont in recent years.

If Federer wins Montreal he only needs to achieve equal result to Nadal in Cincy to become #1.
I'm resigned to the next generation after this being even more dominated by baseliners. Crap net game barely registered anymore. Kyrgios is the one who can go against that but doesn't seem like he's going to get it together anytime soon.
Obviously I wouldn't root for Sascha against Roger but if the latter falters then hope the kid wins it. He's worked really hard this year and deserves a big title.
Yesterday it showed why Federer's - Nadal h2h is skewed. In an open route to the final Nadal faltered to a talented youngster and won't meet Federer post Wimbey once again. They have only 2 matches post Wimbey till the WTF out of 37
Yeah Shapovalov played well but still his first serve wasn't all that and he was missing a lot of shots in the 3rd, coupled with Nadal unable to break him. Same old issue from Nadal at HC's when things aren't getting his way - stay 2-3 feet behind the baseline and moonball it deep. It's like he didn't have plan B.Some feathers will be ruffled at this but you cant be considered the GOAT if you havent dominated the tour for the whole year including all the events leading to the WTF.
If Djokovic manages to finish on the same Slam count as Nadal I think there'd be little doubt who is the better player.
I'm considering to officially jump on (or create) the Shapovalov bandwaggon. Could turn into a great player.
Knew it. All the tools to challenge for the top in the next years.
It's been an interesting tournament in the top half. People complaining about the horrible lack of talent were probably the same that complained back when the same players got to the last rounds for years. For the first time in forever we have two young players in a Masters semifinal - properly young, too, not 24 year olds whose breakthrough "might just be one good run away". Should be a cracking match between Shapovalov and Zverev.
If Denis gives a good account of himself against Sascha, count me in on the train.
Always great to see an one handed backhander doing well.
Surely record against his peers needs to be taken under consideration, no? Like how Roddick and Fed were compared all the time back when they both broke through. No more convincing needed for me. He was already the youngest player to reach a Masters 1000 QF since 1990 and went one further still. His playstyle is also great to watch. Hype on.

Kyrgios isn't as big a prospect as these two, based on his mental and physical fragility. There's also the questions marks concerning his passion for the sport.
The Aussie mentality. Love for the laid back, easy life, bad influence from peers.
On pure talent I think he's better than these two. Easy to forget now but when he broke through in 2014 he was pulling off outrageous shots against players with much higher ranking, and were never fazed facing the top pros.
