Shame it turned out this way. Inevitable really. Players should have a long hard look at themselves because their performances are no where near the standard required. INEOS flexing their muscles. On them now to appoint a manager who can get a tune out of these wasters.
It’s a difficult one. Three years ago, Ten Hag was the head and shoulder obvious choice looking at available coaches ticking the right boxes for Man Utd. That didn’t work out, and now there really are no candidates even faintly as good a bet as he seemed then.
I’m not surprised it came now, despite United playing a totally dominating first half and losing to a travesty on the Man City/Abu Dhabi pay roll.
United have shown enough promise in parts this season to justify giving him the time (good parts of games against City, Fulham, Brighton, Palace, Southampton, Porto, Villa, Brentford and West Ham). If those were built upon and expanded, it would be more than good enough.
To me, what sinks him, is the recurring collapses, not only the obvious ones (Liverpool, Spurs, Porto), but also parts in games we otherwise dictated. He hasn’t sold his vision to the players in a way that makes them remember it and stick to it even when tired, disappointed or confused. That shouldn’t be so after two and a half season.
The fact that we don’t score is maybe what has forced the issue. I’m as curious as you when it comes to which new coach will get such a young (Garnacho, Diallo, Højlund, Zirkzee, Antony) and inconsistent (Rashford) front line scoring consistently.
