I do think with young players especially in the EPL, people overthink their development path or in some cases ignore it completely, waiting for the right moment for them to come in and play like a first team adult player.
Leads to alot of wasting of talent and a waste of the early part of a young players career. Imagine Messi or Maradona not being allowed to play first team football until 19 or 20.
I'd rather take a punt on a young kid like Gomes/Chong when they're younger even if they are a little frail and challenge them to handle it. Challenge them early on and you might get yourself a potential worldie at a young age and if they can't hack it, so be it.. but holding them back by virtue of their age and the fact they're a little weak at this stage until they're 20 etc.. for me that is no guarantee for success either.
There is no perfect age to throw a player in, sometimes you have to let them just swim or sink and gamble. Some will have the attitude to thrive in the grown up game, love the physical challenge despite the odds being against them and others won't.
