Tahith Chong

Looks like a proper old school winger to me. Shades of Andre Kanchielskis. Hopefully they’ll have come back in fashion again by the time he’s a first team regular!

Hmm. I haven't watched him much to be honest. Mostly highlights but he was popping up all over the final third today. Thought he found space very well.

Oh he wasn't playing as a winger, don't get me wrong. He plays like a winger, though. I guess Lingard is making a career out of playing a bit like a winger in a more central position, so I probably shouldn't be pigeon-holing him.

Hopefully he just keeps his head down and works hard from here. Certainly looks talanted. I hate getting excited about our kids after Januzaj ffs.

Yeah that's stop on. He reminded me of Lingard today. Just couldn't put a finger on it.

He travelled with the ball well but his decision making was lacking at times.

Yeah i thought that too. Should have definetely did better with that shot which got cleared off the line. Should have probably squared it or at least put his laces through it.

Horrible how he doesn't have any confidence at all. It's so obvious how scared he is in some situations. He should've scored, he should've made a better decisions in final third.

The feck you talking about? You've made another terrible post in the match day thread. Seems like a wum.

He had the whole time on the planet to go a little bit to the midfield or at least bend it to the right side of the goal, but he just kicked it in. Also he lost about three or four balls in penalty area - that's when you make a decision to pass or either finish it - opportunities were never used. But he's young he'll learn from it.

He looks like he's in a constant struggle to maintain control of his own limbs.

Looks a good player though.

If Chong looked like a central European, I'd compare him to an 18 year old Ivan Perisic. Very classy two footed footballer with great physical abilities.

He looks like my idea of a United player. Quick, exciting and full of flair. Look forward to seeing him develop.

You'll do well to find many players who can run that quickly with the ball and keep it under close control like he can.

They just happen to be shit footballers. I don't think playing them at a young age was neither here nor there.

For me if you're good enough, you should be allowed to play rather than languishing in reserve football. That way, a manager can quickly ascertain if this player is worth investing in and has the mentality to handle first team football, and if answer is yes.. the being careful with minutes etc, is still relevant but at least you are aware of how good the player is and that player also knows he has a future there, has had a taste of first team football and will hopefully be motivated to break into the side as a regular.

If the player is unable to handle the step up, or the game gets to his head etc - see Januzaj.. then you get rid. Fair enough - we gave him a fair shot and he failed to grab it with both hands and he's moved on. Better to do that, rather than wait and wait and then player comes through and he isn't all that.. he's wasted years in reserves.

You know what, I agree.

Kid could run two lengths of the pitch before Mata would even make it to the halfway line. Give him some minutes at the end of the season.

Id put him on the bench abd use. Him as a impact sub for the right side.in attack.

No one is doing well in that position anyway.

It's hard to predict at the end of the day. I mean who really thought Harry Kane would become the best n9 in the world when he couldn't get playing for various teams that he went on loan to. I practically stopped getting too excited about young talents. Only one for me now is that Fulham kid. He looks the bollocks.
The Fulham kid (Sessegnon) and Chong follow eachother on twitter which is interesting...

If LVG was still at the helm, I believe Chong would've made his debut by now.

Having him as a bench option would be fantastic because he'll provide unpredictabilty on the RW.

I think Chong is a great example of where we failed with Adnan (apart from his mental game). Chong looks like he's a winger and he carries the ball like a winger. Januzaj was highly rated from performances that didn't contain much dribbling in them. I feel like we tried to turn Januzaj into something he's not and he has since altered his game to reflect that despite the lack of results.

Chong reminds me of Sane. Gomes is really talented, but ever since he made the stepup he's been having a problem imposing himself in a match. It's similar to when he first made the step up to the u18s. He doesn't play poorly as his technical ability and link up play is always good, but you can see the difference with Chong. Chong is always imposing himself on matches and he does this by always being on the go. He plays at a speed that asks a lot out of the opposing defense. He dribbles at players after receiving the ball with his back to goal, and he combines at a great speed to get in behind the defense. Gomes right now is playing a much slower game despite showing in games that he can handle the 1 touch pass and go attacks at will. He just chooses to not impose himself.

And so was Macheda. Iirc he was ripping up in our youth teams.

Anyway, Chong looks a great talent but what position do people see him in the future?

Seems to me like a attacking mid more than a winger to me.
Wilson was able to score amazing solo goals where he dribbled past defenders that I don't think Macheda showed. However, his speed was definitely part of those goals and he did have technique to handle the dribbling required to do that unlike say Chicha.

The biggest talent in the academy. He just needs to grow a bit more into a man’s body and will be tearing it up on the first team.

Agree, he looks the best we have at the moment.

Not sure about tearing it up in the first team. He's an exciting talent but a long way off that yet.

There's still a lot of areas of his game he needs to tidy up. He spends a lot of time chasing after his own touches of the ball rather than actually having it under control...half the time it seems to happen because he's trying to do two or three things with it all at once, and that's something he can improve with by just adding a bit of composure.

He looks clumsy a lot of the time and he probably needs to be given time to iron some of that out as well...aain it almost just llooks like he's too eager, and just needs to channel the eagerness with reading the game a bit better. The parts of his game he does well make him exciting to watch and if he builds up the rest of his game around that you'd think he'll have a chance and certainly get opportunities somewhere down the line..

Getting above average play at RW would improve the balance in United's attack a lot. I hope Chong gets his chance too help United secure a top 4 finish.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion but all to their own...

By watching him play?

You actually think he can go into the first team and "tear it up"? Even in that video above there's like, five or six times he just loses control of the ball or lets it get away with a poor touch.

He looks a really good talent but he's not ready to throw into the first team. It's too early to judge him in that regard.

Everytime we have a decent young player in our acedemy or in the reserves people think theyre going to jump into the first team and jjust walk over opposition teams. We're 2nd in arguably the tooughest league in the world. That's just never ever how it's gooing to work. It's never how it has worked with the possible exception of Rashford.

I never said he would go straight into the first team and tear it up straight away. No one on the RW is tearing it up in our first team either and Chong could imo enhance our options in that position over our current non existent options...

Would you rather have a explosive player like Chong who gives the ball away afew times trying to make things happen by dribbling 30/40 metres and pinning the opposing fullback. Or the slow and immobile Mata who constantly looks to come inside due to his obvious physical limitations? Your criticism of him giving the ball away is unfair when the same could be said of Mbappe and Dembele the two young French prodigies.. I've lost count the amount of times Rashford has run the ball out of play or lost the ball due to him making it obvious that he's about to kick and rush it past the opposition player which is then easily read and results in loss of possession.

We haven't had a player come from the academy as good as Chong potentially since Ryan Giggs for the wing position. I've been following our youth for many years and have disagreed with many people over the suitability of many young hopefuls over the years. Even Rashford I didn't think was good enough to make it and I'm still sceptical about Angel Gomes.

Chong has exceptional close control when dribbling at full speed and if some of you haven't noticed he's also tactically very aware for such a young player. One example being in the loss to Chelsea when he slotted in at LB when Olusunde was caught up field. His movement and work rate are already top notch and just needs the chance to showcase his undoubted qualities in the first team to give us a different option. Using other young hopefuls from the past who failed to make the grade here as a stick to beat the player with is a very narrow minded way of thinking considering I believe he is better than all of them with the exception of Ravel Morrison.
