Tahith Chong

I used to be a half decent goalie myself, but that also seems like a long time ago. Less than average outfield player, for sure. I think most goalies are no better than average at best. Surely, though, there has to be some pretty decent or even former top players on here?

Concerning Chong, I do fear a little for his size if playing as a winger. Very few tall players have the necessary explosiveness on the first few yards to be effective on the flanks. Ronaldo and Bale are the exceptions, and even Bale needs a yard or two - not like Lennon who pretty much started at top speed.

When did our academy last produce a good winger?

Well Giggs and Ronaldo dominated our left hand side for 2 decades so no chance of any winger breaking through there.

Can't say I can remember any outstanding RW either since Beckham. Although, a lot of people have said Rashford played a lot of his youth football on the right hand side.

Because I'm sure Mourinho and coaching staff share lineup exclusives with Fifa 18. In reality, he's in Fifa because even they are hearing of his hype right now.
Hes in FIFA because his hair demands recognition.

This season can be written off so why not play Chong, Gomes and Axel this season....cant be as bad as rhe likes of Smalling, Jones, Lingard and Mata.

It’s not written off at all.

Well, it's not really quite written off in terms of what we need to achieve, now we are back in a top 4 battle! But certainly, it would be great to see them get their chances at some point.

We still have alot to play for and having Chong as a bench option would actually enhance our prospects for the rest of the season.

I love seeing these types of players come through but I hope it's done sensibly. I hate the hype young players get these days and then the inevitable bitching a moaning when they settle into the side and inevitably aren't world class every game.

Hopefully we'll be in a position where the last couple of games don't matter too much and we can give him a little run out and then next season get some action in the cups. Realistically though that's not how Mourinho brings talent through. He's much more clinical in his assessments. If they're too good for the reserves they get tested in the first team, if they're not quite ready for that yet they go out on loan otherwise that's it, they're a first team player and get treated as one.

Based on exactly zero senior appearances.

Based on watching him regularly and making a judgment on his future progression.
How good he'll end up being in the future has got nothing to do with whether or not he'd enhance our chances of winning in any given match this season.
You speak with a certainty that hasn't been earned at all. It's alright to believe he'd improve our chances but to say it's a sure thing is a bit early.

He's certainly an amazing prospect. I'm sure the coahces/manager are aware of this. I think he still needs to bulk up a little bit since any player will say that the move to playing in the Premiership is not one rung up the ladder but ten! Also, that was a pretty horrendous injury he had and I'm sure they need to be careful during the early stages of getting back on the pitch.

It's a massive massive step up to the first team from u18s. Impact like Rashford had is almost impossible. It'd be nice to see him get some game time but foolish to think he's the answer to anything this season. That's just heaping pressure in the lad.

I speak with a certainty due to the Amazing ability of Chong and our current options at RW. I wouldn't hesitate at all to throw the explosive Chong over the slow Mata as a impact sub.

Wouldn't mind seeing him and Gomes in the FA Cup. Or if some how we hammer Seville away, give them minutes at O.T.

He played well in the u23 too. He looks physically ready to me. I wouldn't mind seeing him on the bench on Saturday.

There's a really easy joke here, with your username.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'd love to see him on the bench and get game time. I just don't think he'll be a big part of the rest of our season, for the reasons I mentioned.

Honestly, I would have him on the bench against Huddersfield or even start him along with Gomes, those players have the technical ability, drive, and hunger that some of our senior players don't have in their locker.

One of those occasions where I wouldn't blame the manager even if we would go out given that he gives a proper chance to these youngsters.

I'm hoping he is in the squad for the FA cup game this weekend, if not then Mourinho needs a rocket up his arse!!!

You mean you think we're winning nowt?

What do you think Sherlock?

We aint gonna win PL or Champs Lge and the only glimmer of chance we have is FA Cup but even then i would say its next to impossible.

Our RW options are not good enough and he should be considered for that role over our current players who are just plodding along there. He'd be a improvement from what we've seen from Mata and Rashford in that role imo..

Agree, even if he is an unused sub that would be a reward for his performances this season.

For next season i would like Chong, Fosu, Axel and Perreira involved in the squad and players like the chuckle brothers (Smallijg & Jones), Darmian, Zlatan, Fellaini, Carrick (retiring) and Mata sold or released to make room for the young kids.

Can’t see Jose taking that kind of approach. If we finish second this season, he will be looking to win next year, and will never axe experience like Smalling and Jones in place of kids when trying to jump from second to first.

If he hasn't realised Smalling in particular is a liability then i would question his mental state and maybe we should be looking for a new manager in the summer who is capable of doing the job.

Smalling is good at defending, and not a liability at all. That said, he can be improved upon I agree.

If we're substituting for Martial at RW on 70', I can't imagine Mata being more effective in attack or defense than Chong. If you're good enough, you're old enough.

This isn't fifa. It's impossible to say whether he would do either as good as Mata. The step up from youth and reserve teams is massive and I think people commonly forget that.

In football there's no guarantees even if the player is signed for big money and is a established international.

Can we make a judgement call on Chong having more of a impact in comparison to Mata on the RW? Of course you can by evaluating the skillset of players and not blindly pointing to the step up.

There's a LOT more to football than "skillset". He may look good in the reserves but it's a much different story to playing first team football. I'm not saying it blindly, I'm saying it with the history of youth players coming though. Being a skillful player doesn't make you good enough for first team football here.

Indeed. Mentality is at least half of the equation.

I'm fully aware of the step up to the first team and have been following our reserve and youth teams for many years.

You talk about the history of the youth coming through which I'm fully aware of too. But when in our history have we had a wing forward as good as Chong who not only is skillful but has fantastic work rate to go with his fantastic football ability? You might have to back afew decades...

Chong has more than just skills to break into our first team and fight for a place on our RW. In all my time watching our youth it's the first time i've endorsed a player for our first team from our youth/reserves.
