I think Maicon could be a world class right back in any team at his peak, whereas Alves really did have a helping hand for a fair chunk of his peak with messi to link up with.

Harms just took the words out of my mouth too, Maicon was the one being played for the national team.

At Sevilla he had more defensive duties and IMO he was pretty solid albeit off his peak, which always tends to get overlooked due to his attacking output. Take 06/07 season for example. Later he developed his attacking game much more true, due to the way Barca played and they were more dependent on his attacking game than defensive one.

Minimal defensive contribution is a myth.

Take a look at Maicon best season and Dani Alves at the time statistically:

Maicon in 09/10 was averaging 1.9 tackles in CL and 2.5 in Seria A, 2.4 and 2.7 interceptions accordingly.

Dani Alves same season at Barca - 3.5 and 3.6 tackles per game(CL/La Liga) and 2.6, 2.8 interceptions per game.
 
They are different players TBF, its about what you need in your team. Alves is class above in possession, combining in tight spaces while Maicon is a one man wing. You dont even need someone in front of him, give him the ball and he will bulldoze his way out of any situation. To simplify and go with only team styles id pick Alves(Enrique version not Pep) for a possession based team and Maicon for a counter-attacking side.
 
It is always hard to rate Alves defensively. I can't remember a full back who completely shut down his opponent so many times no matter what quality they were, just flawless performances while still being great offensively. On the other hand he had more brainfarts than any other top defender and could on his own be the reason for a loss at a ratio that no other top full backs were either.
 
Pretty much good to go with my pick, he's played for a billion teams so just double checking.

Why not leave the pick behind? I don't get why this last round has taken forever, should be easy enough to leave options 1/2/3 with someone and go enjoy the weekend. The will most probably never play anyway!

Who are the toughest wingers that Maicon and Alves have had to face, how often and did they shut them off as well as make an impact going forwards.

Quick research into that should provide a clear answer.. To my mind not that many great wingers to defend against in Serie A and off top of my head not too sure who Maicon has famously marked out of games.

When will you be available for the match? Personally, I can't make it at any time next week as I'm involved in a release that week, so next Sunday is the best time for me.

However, if @Enigma_87 is available and willing to be involved on the matchday discussions, he may possibly have more free time on his side.
