@bleezy

Even at 34 on the last Euro, i think he was the best RB on the tournament.

Yeah he is a very dependable player very good with crosses. He should have moved to a better club (was linked with us under LvG and is still linked to Barca). But then again, loyalty isn't something to be discarded either I guess.

No idea who you are talking about, but my guess is he is actually an AM.

Darijo srna Croatian captain. Plays Right back and RW

Grrr, a pox on both your houses. sadly i wasnt home and forgot about him when i made my maicon pick. really like srna myself

Yeah but to be fair Maicon is an excellent RB. He was in our shortlist initially but Cesar blocked him out.

Indeed. I really love Maicon, but for this draft, Maicon blocked several injury/reinforcement strategies for me while Srna blocks almost no one at all especially in case of reinforcements.

When I think about this draft, I'm actually surprised Srna wasn't taken much earlier.

@Downcast ..FFS you took our right back

You have taken my central midfielder so I've decided to take your RB. Fair reward :)*

There is an African RB who could do the job for you or a South-American RB successul with his country in the last decade.

* This post is not a 'threat'

In terms of absolute peak I'd take Maicon ahead of Dani Alves. He was a force of nature.
Nah Alves is a level above in the attacking phase and pretty equal defensively IMO. Maicon had some great seasons but I'd always take Dani Alves.

Maicon was much better defensively, he was basically a demo version of Cafu.
Alves' array of attacking skills was very impressive though

No way man, at least not at Maicon's peak. He was one of the best defenders of the treble winning Inter team. Alves even at his peak when not playing for Barca was easily humiliated.

Like Macon vs Bale the very next season after that treble winning season? :D

Maicon was great for Inter for couple of seasons. Flopped at City where he was over the hill. Alves won back to back EL titles and hit his peak at Barca which was longer than what Maicon had to offer.

I don't think he ever reached that 09/10 form before or after that season.

Yeah I was just comparing the peak

I disagree. Look at Barca's 10/11 and 11/12 seasons. They conceded less than 30 goals in both seasons in La liga, won CL and 5 other titles. Dani Alves was instrumental on that right wing in both campaigns.

Sure Barca had an impeccable midfield and dominated games but compare the defences. Inter in that treble winning season had Zanetti, Samuel and Lucio at the back shielded by Motta and Cambiasso.

Barca's defence other than Alves was young Pique, makeshift Mascherano, 32 years old Abidal, shielded by Busquets.

Yeah I was just comparing the peak
I think Inter's tactics (Jose's effect) along with some great defenders and Cambiasso/Motta, elevated his game in that season. Never being able to replicate that form afterwards is also a testimony to that.

He was possibly the best 1v1 defender in the team though. The entire Inter team fell apart after that season not just Maicon. Funny you mention dependency on tactics, watch Copa America 2011 to see what happens to Alves when he's taken out of tiki taka.

No way. Easily Zanetti was better, Lucio as well. I'd rate Samuel too, although playing in a lot different positions that require different skillset. As I said Zanetti contained a peak Messi on the left, whereas Bale tore him a new one twice a year later.

Tiki taka is not an advantage for Alves to showcase his defensive game, on the contrary, especially since that Barca side depended a lot on his attacking output. Yet he's much more likely to get exposed defensively in a system like that, than defending deep with two DM/CM's sitting and covering for his runs.

Alves was pretty solid albeit off his peak at Sevilla. Yes he struggled with Ronnie, but who didn't at the time?
There was also puyol.
He didn't play regularly and was struggling with knee injuries at the time.
Me and @Invictus consistently have differences when it comes to the Alves/Maicon debate.
I'd imagine so. What is your take on it?

I'd imagine so. What is your take on it?

I'm on your side put it that way but it does annoy me that Maicon v Bale is overstated.. the guy was not quite what he was by then and pushing 30.

Not sure why you keep referring to that when I've been talking about his peak and he was obviously past it then.

2007-10 was his peak and he was the best RB in the world during that time.
Well it was like half an year after the best season he had like ever?

I'd consider his peak at 08/10. I don't think he was as good in 07 as in 08 for example despite the Copa. Dani Alves always seems to be underrated in that aspect for me, which is odd given how instrumental he was in a high line attacking side and the space he covered on that right side.

His defensive contribution was minimal. He wasn't awful, like Bobby Carlos wasn't, for example, even if they both are having problems with their reputation, but it never was an outstanding feature in his game. He was the best in the world (by far) at what he did, and he was the most influential fullback in the past decade or so, but it was mostly because of his attacking skills, be it at Sevilla or at Barca. World class (maybe even GOAT level) attacking-wise + not a liability defensively

Maicon was a world-class defender at his peak. Better positionally, better 1 on 1, a complete package. That's why he was the first choice for that Brazil team when they both were on fire.
