Sunderland bid £12m for O'Shea, Gibson & Brown

If we have anything like the injury crisis of 2 years ago, we'd crumble!

That injury crisis was freakish. You cannot carry players to cover that type of insanity with the 25 man squad limit even if you could cope with the extra wages and keep the players happy.

Half of this site knows better than Fergie. Where have you been?

I mostly avoid the match day threads. :(

I trust Ferguson in whatever he does. I just hope this

a) Isn't motivated by a cut in wages
b) means Ferguson has other targets.

It'd be a shame to let two great servants, and a really promising CM go.

a) Most likely motivated by rebuilding
b) Jones and Cleverley to replace O'Shea and Gibson

Who says O'Shea wants a transfer? It's probably the club rebuilding, lowering wage bills, and more than likely recognised another player who will replace him.

Anyway, we're still in speculation mode.

My point is slightly different. If O'Shea, just like Butt and P.Neville left for 1st team football on his own accord, the club might let him go.

But if he wanted to stay, why sell him off? What you mentioned are perfectly legit reasons, but the fight here was more about our own fans thinking that we should dump him for a mere 4mn just because he wasn't good enough in their eyes. That too after years of service he has provided.

Fans demand utmost loyalty out of players and yet show none to them.

Replacing him would happen but not overnight. I doubt rebuilding will happen at one shot. You have to phase it out. Accoding to me, you just can't lose players like O'Shea after you've already lost Scholes & Neville. With Gibson an almost certainty to leave, I'd rather want our club to keep as many club grown players as possible as long as they can provide well enough on the pitch which he clearly does.

Again at the moment if these three go (which I doubt)

Gary Neville - 4 appearances
Wes Brown -15 appearances
Paul Scholes - 33 appearances
John O'Shea - 32 appearances
Darron Gibson - 20 appearances.

104 appearances they made last year between the 5 of them. Or 21 appearances each. That's an integral part of our Prem winning team. Just because every game wasn't in the premiership, doesn't mean they weren't important. If they're not playing the League Cup /FA Cup games then who is?

At points last season, we were missing Fabio, Valencia, Giggs, Anderson and Ferdinand for long periods. We went to Anfield with Vidic and Rio injured. Evra barely recovered in time.

Say Rio and Fabio both go down for a month next year. And then Evans gets a red.

We'd be left with

Rafael-Jones-Vidic-Evra

With Smalling on the bench. If we have anything like the injury crisis of 2 years ago, we'd crumble!

So you think we won't be signing replacements or promoting players from our youth teams?

Who was the one who counted up the appearances of Gibson and said without his contribution we wouldn't have won the league? or something like that. We wont miss Gibson, Brown hardly played last year and O'Shea is effectively being replaced by Jones. Neville hardly played, Scholes will no doubt be replaced.

If it includes Evans then it is even more of a piss take. Evans is worth at least £10m alone.

I understand where you're coming from, and I very much doubt O'Shea wants to move because he wants regular football. I doubt he'd get more games at Sunderland than United, with us being in Europe and more than likely going further in domestic cups. I really think if the rumours are correct it's United who are wanting to do the deal.

I would be surprised if United were wanting to sell O'Shea. Fergie clearly thinks a lot of him, I would be very, very shocked and quite dissapointed if this is true.

That would be sad. But hey, SAF knows best.

And when you put it like that, it looks like incredibly smart business from the genius.

I'd let Brown go.

We only have Gibson, Fletcher, Anderson and Carrick as midfielders now. I would keep Gibson for the time being, and give him one more season. Personally I don't see the hype in Anderson, and I would sell him.

To suggest Jones can easily replace O'Shea is just spackery. Who is he? O'Shea is a seasoned player who has played against the best for years and can slot in anywhere with ease. He's been better than Evra this season ffs. And who promoted IanDangerous by the way?

He is a upgrade over Bardsley at right back, I think he would get over 30 games as a starter at Sunderland easily. Brown is probably bought to play as a cb.

Absolutely.

If Gibson is retained, him and Cleverley would have to share those 20 games which Gibson played. Which is not great for both players.

Feck, O`Shea has to stay! Model pro, losing him, Scholes, Neville and VDS in one season
is hard to take.

Pogba and Tunnicliffe might get a chance too. Gibson will make way to give younger players a chance.

He played over 30 games for United last season despite his injuries. He'd have to have an pretty injury free season to play around the same number of games.

All three of them are in last year of their contracts, I guess its a fair deal then.

You missed out Giggs from the midfielders, and Park has been moved centrally in 2 matches too. I would imagine we'd be adding a central midfielder. It's far too premature to start with all the melodramatic crap and panicking some seem to be doing.

Who has suggested Jones will replace O'Shea easily? He's a very good young, versatile player who has really shone in the big games for Blackburn. Ignorance doesn't make your argument particularly strong.

I really doubt O'Shea will be leaving. Just because Sunderland are potentially putting a bid in, doesn't mean anything.

True, but it is hard to resist the power of the transfer forum. Stronger men than me has tried and failed.

Against us, for one.

Has anyone pointed out that the 3 of them might not want to go to Sunderland?

I'm not being melodramatic, if they go, we'll survive, and we'll be in contention for major honors this season. But what's the reason for moving him on? To clear up space? We have space. Dead weight? He's done enough (IMO) to fight for a squad role next season.

Pardon me if I have better things to do than watch football all day. He's a good player at Blackburn. O'Shea is a versatile, reliable player that has always done a very solid job, and he has experience. I find it a bit disturbing that some people are eager to move on a player who had a better season than Evra, and has been turning out good performances for us for years, for an unproven defender like Jones.

But continue with the insults.

Can the 'last year of contract' argument really be used for O'Shea, though? Surely the reason a player in the last year of his contract is worth less is because he could walk for free a year later, but that doesn't strike me as much of a likelihood with O'Shea. With Young and Neuer, sure, they both want out - but as far as I know O'Shea doesn't.

Of course, if he's asked for a move to get first team football for the rest of his career then I have zero arguments about the price since he's served us so well, but if he himself isn't looking to leave then I don't see why his contract situation should impact the fee we could get for him.

I agree with those who claim that we can do without these players in the future. I think however, that 12M appears to be more beneficial for Sunderland than for us. I am however pretty sure that SAF will handle this in a satisfactory and expedient manner.

I don't think it works like that. Just because he says it won't move and he is in his last year of contract does not mean his price is still going to stay the same.
