Sunderland bid £12m for O'Shea, Gibson & Brown

Not much of a update on the actual transfers. But to me it sounds like they're preparing to reduce the wage structure to fit O'Shea & Brown in. :(

That doesn't mean they will sign any of them - but Bruce naturally has to prepare for the fact that he will be successful in the transfer market

SUNDERLAND expect to make rapid progress on the transfer front in the next few days, with Ji Dong-Won and Darron Gibson’s moves close to completion, writes GRAEME ANDERSON.

With free transfers Keiren Westwood and Seb Larsson both likely to go through and striker David Ngog set to agree to move from Liverpool, boss Steve Bruce can hope to have five new recruits in the very near future.

Question marks remain over whether Manchester United’s Wes Brown and, in particular, John O’Shea will join Gibson in heading to the Stadium of Light.

But talks will be held with their agents this month in a bid to push the deals through and that could leave the Black Cats with seven new signings before the players return to training – eight if a move is done swiftly for Birmingham City midfield star Craig Gardner.

Supporters can then expect a lull in activity throughout July and until the impending closure of the transfer window arrives, at which point several genuinely big deals could be sanctioned.

Sunderland still want Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia, but the Latics want a £10million-plus transfer fee, while the Frenchman’s wage demands would smash the club’s current pay structure.

On top of that, Sunderland remain in the market for a fourth striker. With Ji regarded as one for the future and Ngog’s record hardly prolific, Bruce could ask the club to approve a big-name signing as first-choice to partner Asamoah Gyan up front.

As things stand, the Westwood deal is past the post, with the Coventry keeper’s move already tied up and only the timing of his official unveiling to be decided. The player is currently on holiday.

The Black Cats are also on course to get their other Bosman target, Birmingham midfielder Larsson, although the dead-ball specialist is still attracting interest from elsewhere. Though Sunderland are favourites, that deal cannot be regarded as a foregone conclusion just yet.

Ngog has been pondering a move to Sunderland while on holiday, but the word from Liverpool is that he has decided to go through with the move on his return.

Gibson and Ji, though, are virtual certainties to arrive.

Gibson’s value is £5m in the £12m deal which Sunderland have agreed for their three Manchester United targets and the Republic of Ireland international is keen to sign after seeing his career wilt under the pressure of expectation at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old would welcome a chance to play regularly and develop his talent away from an atmosphere where promising young players have such giants to measure up to when they successfully break into the first-team squad.

Sunderland are also close to announcing the signing of Korean striker Ji.

Reports in Asia say the Black Cats have agreed a deal worth up to £800,000 for the 20-year-old Chunnam Dragons frontman, who is expected to sign a three-year contract.

Ji has confirmed that he is heading for the Premier League, saying: “I hope to survive in the English Premier League as long as I can play like Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung and I also want to be the ace of the team like Lee Chung-Yong at Bolton.”

A spokesman for the Dragons has confirmed that Ji is leaving, saying: “It is a great loss for us to lose him after having him only for one season and after spending many years to train him.

“If he returns to the K-League, he must return to the Chunnam Dragons.”

Meanwhile, Ipswich boss Paul Jewell has insisted there are no firm bids on the table for £9m-rated Sunderland target Connor Wickham.

Wickham could become the fourth striker at Sunderland after Ngog and Ji arrive and Bruce would love to have the Ipswich prodigy in his ranks – the Sunderland manager rates the 19-year-old Portman Road striker as the best prospect of his generation.

But Ipswich will not give up a player, whose potential they recognise, without a fight.

Blues boss Paul Jewell admits that several clubs have made enquiries about the England Under-21 man, but says no formal bids have been made.

Jewell said: “We’ve had enquiries, but enquiries don’t mean anything. I could ring up Barcelona and enquire about Lionel Messi, but it doesn’t mean I’ll get him.

“Connor is happy here and as far as we’re concerned he’ll be with us for next season. The good thing is that we don’t have to sell anyone.”

I think he'll be a good purchase. Even if he offers nothing else, its easy to see him having a 10-12 goal season if he plays regularly. Those goals from midfield will be invaluable to a club like Sunderland.

Yes we will - we won't have a scapegoat!

Rest assured United fans will find a scape goat when he leaves. We still have Berbatov, possibly O'Shea, Carrick and Fletcher. Plus i'm sure there will be a new one promoted.

I think we should really have separate threads for all 3 players now that it seems Gibson is going and no information about Brown or O'Shea are coming through..

Gibson only got so many matches towards the end of the season because he was in the shop window. He's not good enough for United but may do well at Sunderland.

As for scapegoats - we'll always have scapegoats at United. So you don't need to worry about that.

Gibson value should be nearer £7m.
Wes Brown - £4m
O'shea £6m

£17m for all three.

Actually, reading through the Ashley Young Spaculation thread, it seems we already have our scapegoat set in stone for next season, before the poor fecker has even kicked a ball for us.

I must've missed Darron Gibson's dazzling performance at Wembley.

Certainly missed his performances against Shalke and Bayern.

We wont miss him if we buy someone this year, but he is sorely underrated.

£5 million is cheap for someone that was never a liability in a title winning, european cup final reaching squad, and that is still only 23.

Sunderland have got themselves a good deal there.

Agree on Gibbo and O'Shea (ish) however Wes Brown is 31, in the last year of his contract and has huge injury problems. I'd expect around £1mil for him.

What is the eye out on this? I mean look at Henderson and how much he cost. Gibson is a currently a better player than him. I doubt Henderson will amount to anything special. He can't pass, can't tackle, can't do anything just occur space really and always the wrong space too.

I'd still like to keep O'Shea, though, been a great squad player for us, fills in when we're dire with injuries and does more than a decent job.

Really dont want JOS to go. Prob my fav player in the entire squad. will be gutted of he does

Would O'Shea go when he's on £80K a week at United?

Personally i wouldnt mind if he went... we have plenty of defensive cover outside of our first choice defence in either one of the Silva's, Evans, Smalling, Jones.

He's not on £80K a week, people just read the Sun article on it and assumed the worst.

Gibson is slowly and surely becoming overrated on these boards. Who'd have thought?

lol O'Shea playing for Liverpool. There aren't many more players as red as John O'Shea.

If Spurs are in, he'll go to them, which will be a tidy transfer for Harry as he'll add a bit of quality to their defense.

But ahhhh

:p

I'm fairly sure in an interview with UWS he said he grew up a Liverpool fan. I'll have to dig that issue out to confirm.

o'shea to liverpool??:confused::confused:never expected that really...hope he stays..great squad player to have..

gibbo needs game. sunderland would be perfect for him.

wes too needs to play. he is 31 and not many years left in him..like him as a united servant for all over these years but he is going to be our 6th or 7th choice CB and 4th choice RB so a move would be ideal for him...i quite like the prospect of wes moving to everton. would link up brilliantly with the rest of our ex players there.

If Wes goes anywhere I hope it's Everton. My Evertonian father-in-law and his brother really do not rate him at all though, so it'll be even better!

LIVERPOOL are one of five clubs chasing the signature of John O'Shea (right), who looks set to turn down Sunderland.

But there is plenty of interest elsewhere, with Tottenham, Newcastle and Aston Villa all interested in the €6m- rated Ireland defender.

No chance will he go to the Scouse!

If he goes (which i think he might) it'll be a sad day. He's not the most gifted player in our squad, but he has been a massive part of our success due to his versatility and attitude, with the added bonus of coming through our academy so being free and having an affinity with the club and fans.

He is clearly not going to Liverpool, SAF has made his position clear a few years ago when they wanted Heinze he simply won't deal with them.
