Sunderland bid £12m for O'Shea, Gibson & Brown

If there wasn't any truth in it I imagine one of either Sunderland or United would have come out by now and rubbished it.

I dont agree

We'd be down to 3 experienced defenders - Rio, Vidic, Evra

Evans; didnt have a great season last year. It remains to be seen whether thats the norm or his previous season is the real him
Smalling - still inexperienced
Twins - still inexperienced & injury prone

keep in mind we will potentially be bedding in a new 20 year old GK

further keep in mind that last season we ended up with Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher playing in defence

Its prudent to keep JOS around for another year to ensure there is experienced cover whilst we see if the young lads step up to the plate & Evans, Evra regain their form.

Well we can agree to disagree on that one - for me 3 experienced defenders is plenty. Like I said, in a fully fit squad, JOS wont even be making the bench next season.

It was 2 years ago that we had Carrick and Fletch in defence - since then we have many new defensive options.
Smalling and the twins have already stepped up to the plate as far as I am concerned. Plus Jones is arriving and Evans is around to fill in when there is an injury crisis. That's 8 defenders already and still also Valencia as a right back option, so it is easy to see why Fergie would accept any offer for JOS while we can still get some cash for him.

Sometimes I think SAF does what is best for the player, not necessarily the team. JOS has been a loyal servant but faces being marginalised for the remainder of his career with the emergence of the Da Silva's. We have adequate cover and it gives JOS a chance to be a regular first teamer at a good club to play out his career, much like Phil Neville.
Sadly

I will be deeply deeply upset if JOS leaves our club. One of my fav al time players under SAF. Please SAF dont sell him

I like Brown, but if the relationship with Sir Alex has broken down, it makes sense that he is moving on. At least those stupid Brown OG 89 'jokes' will stop

Gibson is a player I never thought would succeed at the club, and I thought a move away would be his best bet. He has actually achieved more than I thought he would here

I don't feel the same about O'Shea. Losing him would be a shame as I think he is an important player for us, and under rated too. If Sunderland do get, its a nice piece of business by Brucey

I think we'll agree to disagree. FWIW, i think he would make the bench

Same as that. Not saying Rood per-say, but every time something like this ever comes up about O'Shea the same people are on giving it large about O'Shea not being good enough for the bench. Same thing for the CL final squad. People really have short memories. Only last season we were seriously short of numbers in defence. John has been with us for nearly a decade and has won everything there is to win.

What happened to loyalty??

And BTW, I think Datura's post was very reasonable, but I still think JOS may get enough games next year to keep him happy.

Wow - SAF is really clearing out dead wood.

This would be quite a move. Quite a few players leaving Caftards:-

VDS
Kuczak
Brown
O'Shea (?)
Neville (left)
Gibson (poss)
Hargreaves
Scholes
Owen (stays)
Berbatov?

That is around 8 players. SAF is making his intent clear. Those who were on the fringes we need to clear out as I need better quality here. If we are to catch up with Barcelona then we need a change of approach (note Wenger won't change his approach).

We got the CL final and won the league and semi-finals of the FA Cup with a dodgy central midfield (sorry - has to be said) which is AMAZING!!!

Feel SAF knows now how to play to be successful in Europe. Now about executing. Truly excited by his mooted signings. We still need at least 1 poss 2 classy central midfielders though.

I can not understand peoples attachment to sheasy. If it is purely what he has contributed to the cub fair enough but brown has the same gravitus.

Sheasy is not good enough, nor has he ever been good enough, his distribution is rubbish has alwas ben rubbish, why is it a great shame he will leave the club? Is it his ability ? I hope not! Is it versitility- he's poor in most positions!

All I am saying is I don't get it!

He's hardly poor in most positions ffs. He and Evans played a massive amount of games for us when we went on that streak of not conceeding 2 years ago., (a club record).

I for one respect O'Shea, squad players are valuable members of the team. As our players keep saying it's a squad game and O'Shea plays an important role in that squad.

I am conscious of not being overly critical & indulging in unneccesary criticism, but he is and never has been good enough, the idea that squadplayers can be poor simply because they are squad players is daft

Over 700 games has said otherwise, or otherwise Sir Alex Ferguson is an idiot.

Gibson to Sunderland makes sense. He will get regular games there

Brown-- I'm not sure what level he is at now. Nev went downhill quick after a long injury layoff . If Brown can get back to his form of 2 seasons back, he could do better than Sunderland. If not, it'll be a good move for him too. They could do with his experience. And the fact that he is big and bad.

Oshea could definitely do better. But if he wants to be the main-man, club captain and the leader, Sunderland might be the team for him. He'd be a first choice at better team than Sunderland, but at sunderland, he'll be their best defender ... easily

I want sunderland to do well. Plenty of united links. But they keep selling off their players. Think they'll be around 10th again next season.... which isnt bad considering how up and down they have been over the last 10-15 years

It's a bit of an ambiguous sentence, thus making it a joke, if read in the right context. Read it again you humourless people :)

Happy for Gibson and Brown to leave and I hope they do well.

Would prefer to keep O'Shea in the squad for another year at least.

this seems to be the common view

i hope we hang onto John as well - our squad strength is one of the things that won us the league last season

losing VDS, Scholes, Neville, Brown and Gibson is a lot of experience leaving the squad

I want OShea to stay. Dont think he deserves to be sold. Plus we need him to play RB against Stoke :)

Shame about Brown. Thought he would stay with us until the end. Always been let down by injuries as he would have surely been better for us (and England). He was immense especially as RB in 2008. Still remember the buildup with him and Scholes before his cross to Ronaldo in the CL final.

Good luck to Gibbo. Hes shown flashes of his passing ability like against Schalke. Then he goes and gets bossed by Crawleys midfield at OT. Regular games will do him nothing but good.

What I'm most interested in in all of this is what Fergie thinks. I reckon he's okay with losing Brown and Gibson, but is O'Shea's sale partly being pragmatic and allowing him football, or does he genuinely not see him in his plans next season? If it's the latter, I suspect O'Shea will be given the nod if he chats to Fergie and will move on somewhere, whether that's Sunderland or not. If it's the former I think he'll stay.

Idiot.

Happy for all of them to go!! Good move for the lads. End of the day space needs to be cleared up looks like a busy summer tbf.

its comments like that which annoy me

He did not get bossed by Crawleys midfield, but the rest of his colleagues, nay, the rest of the team on the day got bossed. Gibson was the best United player on the pitch that day
