Sunderland bid £12m for O'Shea, Gibson & Brown

FO'Shea is on what, 70k per week? Getting rid of him makes financial sense

feckin hell. For the last time O'Shea is not on 70-80K a week. That story was said to be false.

Can't believe people still believe that crap. We have one of the tightest run wage budgets in the world!

Exactly & 32 appearances in yet another title winning season for us proves that. O'Shea even at 30 is only getting started now, he's loads to offer yet!

Yup. Some people have agendas though and unfortunately for Sheasy some people cannot appreciate what he does. He's not the best player but he doesn't need to be. He's a reliable back up that has proved his usefulness year upon year upon year.

According to some though (well, just 1 actually) if we don't sell him we can't progress to "the next level". We'd better get shut then eh?

To be fair TV said exactly what you wrote in bold, and so has pretty much everyone so stop getting your knickers in a twist.

According to you he has loads yet to offer us. So if SAF deems him surplus to requirements, he is wrong in your opinion, correct?

Or are you talking shite?

Just because i think Sheasy still has a lot to offer doesn't mean i'd think SAF was making the wrong decision in letting him go. SAF knows best & i'll go along with what ever he decides to do. There'll be no hate mail coming from me.

You were the one who said it first. It's not my fault that you interpret the same word differently from post to post. Selective reading, I think it's called...

You're not so good at this sarcasm malarky.

What are you babbling about?

Then we are in complete agreement. :)

You said hate mail, I said hate mail. However, yours was not supposed to be taken literally whereas mine definitely was, according to you (= selective reading/interpretation on your part). Then you tried to pull some sarcastic joke regarding my location and (apparently) how new I am to the internet, which also failed miserably.

You aren't very bright, Makki.

I'm pretty satisfied with my intelligence level, thank you. Trying to stoop down and explain it on your level is tough though, I have to admit.

Are you really this stupid, or is this some kind of act? Read the exchange again. Then think 'sarcasm.' You have already mentioned it. Think about it hard. Then read it again once more, for good measure.

Then slap yourself. You can do that a few times, too.

Yeah this, a majority of players that leave Manchester United still have a lot to offer us but we always get better. It's not like SAF thinks 'hmm, let's feck up my squad today. Who can I get rid of? I'm in the mood to make Manchester United worse.'

He will have his reasons for letting a loyal servant go. That's good enough for me. In SAF we trust, thank O'Shea, you gave us a great service but so have a lot of other players. Life goes on.

Erm.

My first post regarding hate mail was sarcastic, obviously. Otherwise I'd have tried to pull some kind of laughing in your face smiley or "are you fecking thick" or something, right? Then your posts after that led me to believe that you were serious in taking my initial post as serious, to which I had to respond by saying that the "hate mail" bit was interpreted differently by you in two separate posts (ie you were sarcastic whereas I was bang on serious). From there I have no clue how we came to this situation right here :jol:

I didn't have a problem with most of what TV wrote. What I disagreed with was when he said we "needed" to get rid of O'Shea to progress to "the next level".

If O'Shea goes, he goes. I'd rather keep him but he'll be no great loss.

A misunderstanding on various levels. Let's be friends. :)

Yeah. I'm all confused now. This is like Inception, a misunderstanding within a misunderstanding etc.

The easiest way of dealing with Nancy Uppercunt is to either ignore everything he says or fire back as much abuse as you can muster. Generally though just never take anything from him seriously. He's a turd.

I am both disgusted, and proud of you. Brother.

IF O'Shea goes, that means we've lost Neville, Brown, O'Shea and brought in 1 lad, high potential but only 1 season of first team football, fighting for relegation. Now, you may say "but Brown and Neville didn't play" but thats not the point, they were there to be picked if the others needed a rest or if we picked up an injury crisis. They were an option. A squad game is all about options.

I hate to keep banging on about it, but O'Sheas experience is also invaluable, especially in a season where we've now confirmed departures of VDS, Neville, Hargreaves & Scholes, with potentially Brown to go out too. You need the older heads around just to calm the younger lads down when they start to progress in competitions.

Onto my last point, the twins are still growing and picking up a lot of injuries. Evra was pants last year and Evans was not great either. It would be prudent to keep O'Shea for at least one more season whilst everyone settles in.

Especially in a season where we will be bedding in a new GK!

I would say our squad has been too big and that it was in need of a trim - I would argue that we kept Brown and Neville for 1 season too many - no one else has a squad as big as ours. A bit more focus on quality over quantity is what we will see this summer. It will also be a summer that sees the average age of the squad drop dramatically - it is time for a new era.

Even without Oshea there will still be a huge amount of experience in the dressing room. Giggs, Rio, Evra, Vidic, Owen, Park, Carrick, Rooney etc - we are not lacking in players who have experience of winning trophies, and playing in CL, international tournaments etc

With a fully fit squad, Oshea is not currently good enough to make even the bench (as proven by the CL Final) - if he stayed I am sure he would get some games but his level is likely to decline from now so it would be our last chance to get any decent cash for him - from a business perspective it makes sense to sell now.

Now I am not saying that I want Oshea out the door immediately, he could easily be useful for another year or two, but neither would I be too bothered if he wanted to go somewhere he was assured of first team football. We will have ample options to take his place in the squad both in terms of playing ability and experience.

I dont agree

We'd be down to 3 experienced defenders - Rio, Vidic, Evra

Evans; didnt have a great season last year. It remains to be seen whether thats the norm or his previous season is the real him
Smalling - still inexperienced
Twins - still inexperienced & injury prone

keep in mind we will potentially be bedding in a new 20 year old GK

further keep in mind that last season we ended up with Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher playing in defence

Its prudent to keep JOS around for another year to ensure there is experienced cover whilst we see if the young lads step up to the plate & Evans, Evra regain their form.

Doesn't seem to be but it'll be a complicated transfer, I can imagine O'Shea would get better offers than Sunderland, possibly Brown too.

Getting all 3 players to agree to a move will be far from easy.

Good point!!!

Back in 2008 Sunderland bid for 4 Tottenham players (Tainio, Malbranque, Chimbonda & Kaboul), in the end they managed to get the 3.

I remember reading a few seasons back that JOS is one of the more prominent figures in terms of keeping things loose in the locker-room and in training. That kind of presence can be invaluable, and if true then likely one of the reasons the club has retained him for so long despite the so-called "sub-MUFC" performances.

a bit like you hungrywing, you're keeping things loose in the general forum, so please dont go

Brucie Bonus for Gibson

Published on Friday 10 June 2011 12:31

DARRON GIBSON has conceded the time might be right to leave Manchester United in search of regular first team football with Sunderland as the ‘Black Cats’ closed in on signing the midfielder last night.

SIMON COLLINS reports

Sunderland boss, Steve Bruce launched a £12 million raid on his former club on Wednesday for United trio John O’Shea, Wes Brown and Gibson, and it’s understood the Old Trafford club accepted the bid late last night.

Gibson - whose contract expires next summer - is viewed as a ready-made replacement for Jordan Henderson who looks bound for Liverpool with the Republic of Ireland international admitting last night he would “love to play for Steve Bruce” should he find himself surplus to requirements at United.

Following United’s imminent capture of ex-Blackburn centre-half, Phil Jones - who can also operate in Gibson’s central midfield role - that chance appears to have arrived sooner than anticipated with the wheels already in motion on his transfer to the North East of England.

The 23 year-old Hazelbank lad arrived in Manchester eight years ago and burst onto the first team scene in the 2008/09 season. However, he now appears destined for the Stadium of Light despite enjoying his most successful season in a United shirt.

The talented midfielder won his first Premiership winners’ medal this season, making 20 appearances for his club in all competitions including three Champions League appearances en-route to last month’s Wembley Final.

While it’s understood an agreement has been reached between the two clubs on the transfer fee, personal terms have yet to be ironed out with each of the players involved and their representatives.

However, the attractive prospect of regular first team football under Bruce looks like being the deciding factor in any move for Gibson. Commenting to the ‘Journal’ last night, the Derry man suggested that it could be the perfect time for him to part ways with his boyhood club.

“It wouldn’t faze me one bit to leave, all I want is what’s best for me,” declared Gibson. “So if the best thing for me is to leave and go somewhere that I’ll play every week then so be it.

“I haven’t sat down with Sir Alex to talk about it but obviously if it comes to me not playing as much as I would like next season then I’ll have to move on. It has come to the stage were I’m nearly 24 and I’m going to have to go somewhere else if I don’t start playing regularly.

“If it comes down to it I just want to go somewhere where it’s right for me.”

A Lot to Offer

And Sunderland would offer a genuine chance for Gibson to establish himself on the Premiership stage and he feels both parties would benefit from his arrival on Wearside.

“There are four teams every year that play in the Champions League from the Premiership so there’s not many other teams in the Premiership that would have that experience within their team. So even though I am young, no matter where I go, experience-wise, I’m going to be a big help.

“Obviously playing International and Champions League football is going to be a big help to wherever I go. So if I do leave it will be a big help to which ever team I go to and it will obviously be a big help to me too if I’m playing every week.”

And the presence of former United captain, Steve Bruce at Sunderland would be a key reason for any potential move to the side which finished 10th last season.

“Steve Bruce has played under Sir Alex Ferguson as well and I think he bases his managerial style on Sir Alex,” added Gibson. “If it came to it, I would love to play for Steve Bruce but at the minute I’m not sure what’s going on.”

Should Gibson and Sunderland agree personal terms, then the former Tristar Boys and Maiden City Soccer Academy representative says he would relish the prospect of teaming up with current club mates, O’Shea and Brown.

“It would not only be a massive help for us (O’Shea and Brown) going together but it would be a massive boost for Sunderland as well because we’ve played together for four or five years, we know each other and that experience would be brilliant for any team. Even if we went individually it would be brilliant for the club.

“To be fair, if Sunderland got the three of us it would be unbelievable business for Sunderland.”

Gibson’s departure from the ‘Red Devils’ has been rumoured for some time and recent criticism from United supporters may have forced his hand.

Up-rooting from his Manchester home with his girlfirend Daniella and daughter Evie is not ideal but Gibson admitted it is something he is prepared to do in search of an opportunity to improve his career prospects.

Well it looks like there's some truth in all this!
