Sunderland bid £12m for O'Shea, Gibson & Brown

For a squad player Mascherano is fantastic or Ibrahim Afellay or Maxwell or Seydou Keita, JOS is the pure definition of ok.

Are any of those players available to us or something? We'd probably have to play 10m+ for any of them. Why would we do that when we already have O'Shea?

Obviously not, we can have a blend of quality youth, Jones, Fabio, Smalling plus a blend of the old guard, Giggs now, Rio in a couple of years etc and it just recycles.

So what? We don't have experienced players who are happy to sit on the bench? We need "great players"?

Without O'Shea, Gibson and Brown in our squad last year, we wouldn't have won the league IMO.

Am I missing something here and O'Shea has suddenly become world class? He's a jack of all trades, master of none and for United to progress to the next level, we need to get rid. Great servant, never moans, done his best etc but this is exactly the right time to go and could become a useful player elsewhere, a la Phil Neville & Nicky Butt.

You re spot on but feck me i love this guy

People seem to forget that John O'Shea even starts games now and again when everyone is fit... It's not as if he is simply a bench warmer. He plays as much as anyone when fit.

Great players who's bodies can't handle it anymore are happy to spend more time on the bench obviously.

Oh and ha ha... We wouldn't have won the league without Gibson & BROWN? feck off.

If what you say about O'Shea is true, SAF won't sell him.

Because they are all miles better than O'Shea! And I wasn't suggesting buying them, just pointing out that "fantastic squad player" was a wee bit OTT, the players mentioned are also squad players at their club and they can be called that, not John O'Shea.

Exactly, as much as I love Rafael/Fabio, they're short, a bit slight, and attack minded - O'Shea offered a different option at RB in addition to his ability to play 2 or 3 other positions. In all honesty, if O'Shea does go, I wouldn't be surprised to see another defender bought this summer. Otherwise, we'll have lost Neville, Brown and O'Shea and only brought in Jones.

So you reckon we should pay 10m+ for a player who would sit on the bench? Which one of these Barcelona players should we pay for and would then happily sit on our bench? Let's sell O'Shea for 5m or whatever, and bring in Affelay for 15m? That would make lots of sense... Affelay would be a great left back if Evra got injured.

I said we wouldn't have won it without those three combined. To be honest, I think we'd be struggling without Gibson last year as well.

We pretty much played the last season without Neville & Brown so I wouldn't include them.

Only because we had no one else. If he goes he will be replaced. he probably already has with Cleverley. Not too worried tbf.

Re-read the fecking post, I never said we should buy those players, you've just missed the point completely.

Yet John O'Shea played a fair bit when he was fit. And if he was kept, he'd still get his fair share of games despite the arrival of Phil Jones.

What do you mean if it's what I say? John O'Shea has played over 300 games for the club. I haven't just plucked it out of the sky that he plays now and again.

You make it sound like he is indispensable to the team/squad. If that is the case, then SAF won't consider selling him.

On the other hand, if you are overrating him and his contribution to a ridiculous degree, then there is every chance he will.

I know which one my money is on.

I'm not overrating him. I didn't say he should be in our first XI. I'm simply making the point that he is a great squad player. He is a proven great squad player. Why lose a squad player of that quality for feck all money? It makes no sense whatsoever. Why don't we sell Park for 4m and Evans for 5m as well? If you have players who are willing to stay at a club when they are not in the first XI, and are willing to sit on the bench and then when asked to come in and do a job do then do it well, why would you get rid of them? You wouldn't make enough money to make it worthwhile, nor would you bring anyone in for that money who would do the same thing.

"Great??"

And you say you AREN'T overrating him?

Ha ha, now there's some over-rating.

Smalling and Jones will be better back ups, Evans too if he sorts his shit out.

Do you not comprehend that Smalling and Jones were not bought as back ups? As I've already pointed out, neither of them are going to be content to stay at United for 10-15 years as backups. Both have been bought to play in the immediate or not too distant future. They were not bought as squad players.

So you missed the post about young players being squad players just as is Giggs and when they take over the likes of Rio now become squad players (like Giggs, Scholes, Neville before him) as well as the new youth we always invest in. Comprehend that!

squad player

He is not a great anything player. He is an average player. That said, he can usually be relied on not to let us down when he is picked. Usually.

Honest question for you, if O'Shea wasn't Irish, would you be concerned about this in the slightest?

He's not a great squad player though, Park is, Keita is. JOS is ok.

After 300 odd games for the club, John O'Shea is just an ok squad player? Really? It's amazing how an average squad player can play 300 odd games for a club. It really is amazing.

with Neville and Scholes retired, i think its important we keep Brown and Oshea for a season or two as representatives of our home grown talent , and in Browns case a Salford lad.

If you look in the Irish threads, I don't defend anyone just because they are Irish. If anything, I am more critical with things Irish.

So yeah, I think I would be as concerned. Similarly I was in favour of keeping Michael Owen.

Just to add, O'Shea isn't in Park's class ffs.

Why not? Both squad players that are well known for coming on & doing the job for us along with scoring the odd goal for us here & there, some of which in the past were very important goals. Sheasy is a very solid experinced defender & Park is a grafter that will attack & run all day. Both players offer more or less the same in their respective positions imo.

But you asked if we should also sell him for 4-5mil.... obviously not as he's a much better squad player than JOS.

I was talking about squad players in general, obviously.

There are always better players around than your squad players, but that does not mean you don't need your squad players.

Then I honestly can't understand why you think losing O'Shea is going to be such a blow.

Yet one is routinely picked for our most important games, and the other isn't.
