Sunderland bid £12m for O'Shea, Gibson & Brown

Great squad player indeed, precisely why I wouldn't let him go for a few bob. How much would it cost to get similar level of cover for all the positions he can back up adequately?

I love the twins but they always look like they are a hard tackle away from getting injured. No way I would let him go.

I'm guessing he might want to go now that it seems he is never going to be first choice in any position and maybe he wants first team football. And/or maybe United want to lower the wage bill. Who knows?

The rest of Europe is pretty weak then seeing we've been to 3 CL finals in the last 4 years. 4 straight if that ref in the Bayern game wore a pair of glasses.

I wouldn't compare the side of 4 yrs ago to the current side. Giggs/Scholes were still world class material, we had Tevez and Ronaldo. To be fair Im not saying that this side is shite. In matter of fact I believe that the current side has some fantastic talent in Nani, Rooney, Evra, Vidic etc. What I am stressing on is the fact that throughout the past 2 finals we were blessed with a very easy route to the CL final. For example this year we got a weakened Chelsea which ended 9 points away from the league title and Shalke which, if one forget the keeper, are around Aston Villa level. No Real, No Barca etc.

Bottom line, we've got a good side, which need to be revamped. That is exactly what SAF plans to do.

Well, I think our defense is probably one of the best in Europe...

The only thing we need now is a better DM ( Now as Hargreaves is gone ) as we don't have the legs in MF to really breakdown teams anymore. Hargreaves and Park were all over the place when we put a stop to Barca in 07/08, now we need OH's replacement which in my opinion would help us a lot more than finding Scholesy's as we have Giggs and Ando for that but Carrick is better used in the PL and against a team that isn't so good in pressing like Barca, and it was too bad Fletch was sick with that virus...

Still bright times ahead, Another MF player would be just great !

( Remember, next season I think Owen will be gone and we might have to buy a new No.7 if we don't give this to Nani )

I wouldn't sell OShea and that solely because of his versatility. In my opinion we can live without his experience (Evra, Rio and Vidic provides that) or his talent (he's just a squad player). On the other hand he's useful to have around as he's capable of covering 4-5 roles in a decent way.

However I can see the reasoning behind his departure. Maybe he doesn't want to stay anymore or SAF is planning to bring in a very promising kid with the potential of being world class. As I said before age is not an issue in the current defense. On the other hand it will be in the future since many defenders are ageing together (Vidic, OShea. Wes, Rio and Evra). Its only fair that at this point the manager checks who is indispensable and who isn't and consider whether its worth selling and keeping

Why wouldn't O'Shea want to stay? It's not like he doesn't play, even in his worst of seasons he gets to play every second game, and he was out injured for a little while as well if I remember correctly. He's not really a fringe player here, he plays a lot. The only reason why we would let him go is to make space for younger players who are either coming through or have already made the step up like Fabio.

You've got a point

I wouldnt mind if Brown and Gibson were sold. Brown will struggle to get games, specially now that we have signed Jones. Gibson already doesnt play much so it wont be a surprise if he is sold as well.
I will be sad to see O Shea go. Like a few before me have said, he is very versatile and comes in very handy when we have injury crisis. He plays a lot of games every season so I dont see any reason why he would want to leave.

Selling them would give more rooms for our youngsters. I say yes.

Brown's younger and possibly better replacement is on his way here, and at his best this season, Gibson was average. O'Shea's a loss, but then you can't expect to sell players (even three of them) for £12M and not give up something of value.

Was?

Is this confirmed?

When you say real or Barcelona etc... Expand on that etc please

the writing has been on the wall for Wes for a while now. Very disappointed that he didn't fulfil his promise. Perhaps I read too much into Wilf's remark that he was the best player to come through the ranks since George (or something similar) But for his easy going temperament he'd've been a beast

Surprised at Gibson going if only that SAF always mentions him when talking up our young players

Sad if Sheasy is going. Good and versatile and I just love his big daft happy head when we/he score.

Probably posted already but one journo is speculating that at least 1 of the 3 wants to wait and see if any other offers for him come in.

That would be O'Shea. And yes it's been posted already.

:)

How about a Mythbusters comic instead

If all 3 are sold we're going to have to get a good few players in.

VDS
Hargreaves
Neville
Scholes
Brown
O'Shea
Gibson

All gone!

Should balance things up :)

Chelsea were by no means weak opposition.

The 9 point gulf in the table is a bit misleading, as I think after we beat them, they took their foot off of the gas and conceded the title to an extent.

They were far closer competition than the ultimate 9 point gap suggests.

There were in a bit of a crisis. Their team was growing old, their major investments came too late (January) to have any impact on their honors (players need time to settle down) and according to Ancellotti there was great friction between Roman and himself (they ended up not talking to each other at all).

Recession had hit hard many clubs including ourselves. One could see that through the lack of investment done throughout last year (bar the Spanish sides who seem getting money out of their arses). The only difference was that we've got an experienced manager and a solid unit that is the ideal situation in such circumstances. On the other hand I wouldn't stress two much on the second best team in the world. I think Real and both the Milan clubs (one of which suffered the devastating Rafa effect) are more or less at our level too.

Bottom line, we've got a good side but we also need to revamp the team and add new talent to the side. That's exactly what SAF seems aiming to do.

I also don't think it can be O'Shea. Evans sounds about right as he might feel his place in the squad is in danger with both Smalling and Jones around.

Id rather see us lose OShea then Evans.
