Summer Transfers

Sound logic with only one flaw imo, we will not pay the £40m that Levy will undoubtedly demand for modric. If we were willing to pay that much we probably would have done so last year. If modric does become available, i see no reason why Chelsea would not resume their interest, especially considering that Chelsea was allegedly his preferred destination last summer.

For me Sahin would be a more realistic target, and a better fit for our specific needs. He has not made the impact at Madrid he would have hoped for and as is usually the case with Madrid, those who don't make it there are often shipped out relatively cheaply.

Sahin is still young, has great passing ability and vision and as Dortmund's former captain has already proved he can lead a successful side. I think he could be a very shrewd and potentially brilliant signing for us. A complete midfielder probably for well under £20m. I cannot see another player out there with his ability, at that age, who could be available at a fairly reasonable price. He could well be the top quality bargain SAF has been waiting for.

Agree with this.

No way are we going to cough up the 40mil that it'd take to get modric. Someone like Sahin would be much more gettable at a much more reasonable price.

Sahin played for Madrid yesterday against Apoel, I don't know if it's the beginning of better things for him at Madrid or just an opportunity he got because of the quality of the opposition but he was decent. Then again Apoel didn't even press from one point.

Aye, as was said earlier that deal has been 'a cert' for a few years. He looks a good athlete and has had some good games, but personally I have seen nowt, but that says little.

I think that's fair really. I thought he was impressive early on simply because he looked ready - mentally, technically and physically - to play top level football at such a young age for a midfielder, but there's been little to no progression since that first breakthrough season. Wouldn't rule it out that he's going to develop into a very good player at some point but his future looks increasingly uncertain as each season goes by and that's not a good sign.

Rodwell had some top games earlier this year, obviously leading to his two England games, but seems to have gone a bit backwards since that stupid red card, and obviously injuries, which is concern for him.

Think he, like most(like Anderson and Nani) do, just needs a run of full games to get into a groove, it's harsh to judge any player when half of their performances are coming on in the second half and then getting injured, then playing 2 games and being left out for 3 games or something like that.

Clearly got talent, and I'd have him on par with Anderson, but wouldn't want both.

I hope we steer clear of Rodwell. Another young CM with potential and injury prone. We have those at the club already.

Well yeah, that's why I'd only want him if we sold Anderson, ideally for the exact amount we were to buy Rodwell for.

More than ideally, I'd prefer Modric, another year off his contract, maybe they won't demand such as much if they have time to plan with CL football this time, but hugely doubt that too.

I believe Madrid had suspension on one of of their midfielders thus Sahin made the starting XI.

I still maintain that he's the midfielder type who not only is good enough right now, but could become an even better player once he get a string of games at the very top level.

Rodwell being english and hyped will cost a lot more than what we might get for ando if we sold him.

And yeah, you're right there, no way would levy sell modric for less than 40mil, we wont pay anything close to that.

I'd love a sahin or a martinez type signing. Martinez would cost more but would still be a fantastic buy with his age and ability combined with potential to get better.

My concern for some of thse foreign imports like Sahin, Sneijder etc is that most teams in Europe play a 3 man midfield. We generally do not, as it allows us to give Rooney a free role and he is the fulcrum of the team.

I have never really seen Sahin play, but my immediate concern (and I know it's beating a dead horse somewhat) is can he play in a 2 man midfield? If the answer is no, or even if it's borderline, we shouldn't be considering it.

This puts us in a difficult position, because practically all the other midfielders in La Liga etc are specialised DMs which again, isnt the right role for me. We need a true CM, one who is well rounded enough to contribute both in attack and defense, rather than a specialised AM or DM. This is why I am so keen on Modric, because I have seen him play enough to know that he can do this, and I think he would fit perfectly into our team. Same thing I said last summer with Schweinsteiger.

Again, I've not seen all of these players play, so I'm happy to hold my hands up if I'm wrong, but Fergie has a history of preferring to buy players from the PL rather than from abroad and on this particular transfer saga (ie getting a new midfielder) it is one where I have to agree with that logic. We play a system that not many foreign teams do, so we need to know the the player we sign is going to be able to fit into it, and I don't think many of the popular caf muppet targets can do that.

Ideally I would go for Modric AND a DM like Martinez (or.... Rodwell....eugh). That would give us flexibility (and we know SAF likes players who can play more than one position) and would allow us to trim our squad substantially and get a lot of players on the wage bill.

For those saying about the supposed £40m it would cost to get Modric, I'm not convinced that would be an issue. For the records £40m is essentially the maximum I would be happy for us to pay for him, but I think wages is always the bigger concern for our club.
Like I said, if we were to trim our squad, offload some of the deadwood and luxury players, we could easily accommodate a couple of top quality players into our wage structure.

If we got rid of;
Berbatov
One of Owen/Macheda
Anderson
Park
Ferdinand (contentious one, but if we had Martinez then I would either let him go or get him to take a pay cut - he must earn over £100k p/w and considering fitness issues and the amount of young CBs we have coming through, we just don't need him on those wages)
Scholes and/or Giggs possibly retiring
PIG

That's easily 300k p/w off our wage bill, and that's a conservative figure. We might take in say £25m from the sale of some of those players, if we say Modric costs £40m and Martinez £33m, that's a net spend of £48m, and a wage bill reduction of at least £100k p/w (which is £5m over the year).

We spent more than that last summer and I think would be happy to do it again, as long as the wages are kept in check. The players we lose would be covered for and there are youngsters we can promote for extra cover when needed. For me, that leaves us with a very strong squad in all areas.

I'm interested to see the development of McLean next season at Sunderland, possible future signing dependent on his progress, looks a promising young attacking winger.

David Gill: Manchester United set for 'interesting' summer transfer window
The Red Devil's chief executive has revealed that a number of acquisitions could be made and expressed excitement at a "tense" end to the Premier League season

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has revealed the club is set for an "interesting" summer transfer window.

Speaking to the club's official website, Gill, who has been with United since 1997, explained that work on potential transfer targets is being stepped up as the season comes to a close.

He said: "We're looking at all that. The work goes on all year round but obviously intensifies as we come to the end of the season in terms of players.

"There's various contracts we've got to do, we'll look at some acquisitions and there will be some players who will leave. It's an interesting time."

With the Red Devils currently five points clear of rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, Sir Alex Ferguson's men appear favorites to seal a 20th league title.

When asked whether he would have taken this position at the start of the season, Gill replied favoriably.

"I think we all would," he said. "It's been an amazing run and it's going to be a tense end to the season. If we do it, it will be fantastic. This time of year's not good [for the nerves]. You do get tense but we've done very well and are in good shape now - five points ahead with four games to go. It's going to be tight but it's been wonderful."
Muppet Frenzy!!!!

'some players who will leave'

Berbatov being one, who else is a dead cert do you guys think?

Owen on a free transfer, Park probably also for free, Macheda for a low fee if we can find a buyer, Kuszczak for nothing. Along with Berbatov that's four players and we'll be sending Fabio out on loan. We'll sign Clyne almost for certain, and I think one or two more players - most likely Gaitan and a forward.

What is it about 'we're not interested, we've never been interested, and we never will be interested' that you don't you understand?

If we buy Gaitan, I will resign from the human race, since they're clearly an alien species with whom communication is impossible.

Yet again people claim we don't need a midfielder, and yet again I'm completely fecking baffled in every which way about that.

 me too mate me too. If we ink Pogba and buy a top class CM of some sort that will cement that part of the field. I think we need a top top LB, a CM and another Striker to be able to compete in Europe again. Another plan would to seriously buy a few of those Bilbaro players.

Club have officially said no Gaitan..even made Stuart Gardener bring it up on the Paddy Crerand show on MUTV

Definitely gone: Berbatov, DeLaet, Macheda, Owen, PIG, Pogba, Bebe
Possibly sold to freshen up squad: Nani, Park, Ferdinand, Anderson
Loan move: Fabio

No chance we'll let that many players go IMHO - we more than most recognise the importance of a large squad, and there's no way we'd go on a spending spree to replace that lot.

Of those listed I'd say only Nani would leave for decent money - and it would cost close to the same to replace his talent, which we'd have to do with Park maybe going as well in that scenario (Park should be kept, ideal squad player) as we'd be left with Young and Valencia on the wings basically. I'd be seriously pissed-off if Nani were to be sold, but again I say no chance.

I agree with your "Definitely gone" list, except maybe Bebe as I don't think we'll have many takers for him after the season he's had. Maybe another loan?

Selling Rio would be madness; we wouldn't get anywhere near his worth given his age and injuries - much more value in keeping him, even if his wages remain > £100k a week.

Anderson is a maybe; I quite like him but the injuries are just too much right now. He might get another season or two due to his age but if he can't play many more games a season than he is now then there isn't much point.

The priority coming in should be (as it should've been since 2009 at least) central midfielders of some description - certainly a defensive or box-to-box player to refreshen that area. In reality I'm not getting my hopes up.

With Berba and Owen going, we might need a striker but perhaps not given Joshua King and Will Keane might be in contention, and if we had to Giggs, Park and Young could be deployed as secondary-strikers when Rooney is unavailable. But then again recent history suggests this area and the wings are the most likely to get attention.

I wouldn't be against a young central-defender in the Vidic mould, but not a priority this window.

Then of course Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar

I just had a horrible thought. Fabio going on loan couldn't mean De Laet staying and getting games, could it?

Not a chance. De Laet's United career is over IMO. We'll probably promote Zeki Fryers(if he signs a new contract) or Blackett.

It's never easy to predict who we're gonna sign in a summer, but this year I haven't a clue who is even in the frame.

One reason is because we seem to go for the Hernandez kinda signing these days as opposed to the big names people seem to be talking about (can't see players like Hazard or Muniain coming).

The other reason is because I was so sure we'd sign a midfielder last summer, but we didn't. I can't work out if Fergie is genuinely comfortable with his options, or if he can't get the player(s) he wants, or if it's something else. So I have no idea what Fergie and Gill are thinking.

Example: Berbatov will go, but I have no idea if we're gonna sign another striker or who that might be.

If Fabio isn't ready to be backup then I think Fryers isn't ready. I think one of the positions we will be looking into this summer for reinforcements is the left back position.

I wonder what we will be doing with Robbie Brady and Josh King next season.

I've not seen that news somehow, sorry.

David Gill says that summer is an interesting time because of transfers, Goal makes a headline making it sound as if it means that this summer in particular will be interesting. Nothing to see, yet.

Did I miss something why is Pogba definitely gone?

I still think we should get Wesley Sneijder and get him to play like Scholes, sitting deep and spraying passes. If we can get either Muniain or Martinez from AC I'll be happy, can't see us getting both, though that would be great.

Sneijder - Been utter turd this season and has acted like a twat at times too apparently. Thank feck some of our supporters didn't get their way last summer.
