Summer Transfers

How on earth does 33m constitute value.

Because he is a fantastically talented footballer and young with plenty years in him.

Because top footballers generate huge economic outputs.

Because market rates are this way - a reflection of the revenues at the top of football.

In other words, you're talking fecking bollocks and it doesn't.

The thing with a player like Martinez is that he can play two positions at the highest level and is still young, so paying slightly more than we paid for Berbatov wouldn't be that extravagant IMO.

M'vila and Cabaye don't offer the dual role option but would be cheaper alternatives for midfield.

Yes, if Andy Carroll costs £35m then we can sell Hernandez for £85m.

Probably not because there is only one club stupid enough to pay that kind of money for that kind of player. And we dont sell players to that particular club!

The need for a new CM is a bit overstated. Scholes, Carrick, Cleverly, Ando, a bit of Phil Jones here and there, and a possible return of Fletch, alongside Pogba and Tunnicliffe - is more than enough to get the job done. We've operated on less than that this year and have had a stellar season.
Actually the claim that it isn't need is the one that is over stated. Scholes and Giggs presence are just bonuses, they need proper replacing, Jones isnt'a midfielder and Fletcher we will be lucky if we get him back as good as he used to be.

At the very least we need another player who can do what Carrick does, who is preferably quicker and more phyisical. That is the only way the likes of Cleverley, Anderson and Pogba will ever have the plat form to shine. & the only way we won't over work Carrick or continue to be over reliant on him.

Given that Giggs and possibly Scholes, along side the return of Fletch are likely for next summer. Which players do you think will be leaving us and how many inbound transfers do you realistically expect in the summer ?
I expect us to sign 2 players at most.

INS:
1. A powerful holding midfielder of the Yaya Toure ilk (i.e Martinez/Mvilla/Rodwell type)

2. An attacking midfielder who can play wide and upfront to replace Berbatov and cover for Park's slow down of pace. (i.e Hazard/ Goetze type)

OUTS:
Keepers: Kuszack

Defenders: De Laet

Strikers: Owen and Berbatov.

If we don't buy the attacking midfielder, we will hopeful promote Petrucci to play ufpront and occasionally on the flank

This would be ideal

My muppet picks for the summer are Sahin and Martinez for the central midfield. That is all we actually need imo, but i would be delighted to take Hazard as well for some extra dynamism up front.

Martinez to replace Carrick long term, Sahin to replace Scholes passing ability and playmaking skills.

Out : PIG, Owen, Berba, Bébé , Park, Macheda ?

Hopefully we'll keep Pogba, and promote the likes of Petrucci, Will and Michael Keane to the first team.

Well we can expect (hope) that Cleverley, Anderson and Pogba will play considerably more games next season which will help if Scholes/Giggs retire. I don't see why we need an attacking mid at all but a young technical player to play the holding role should be a priority.

IN:
Modric
Martinez

OUT:
Berbatov
PIG
Anderson
Park
Owen or Macheda
(Ferdinand) - genuinely think he is a luxury player for us, and considering his fitness, wages etc and that Martinez can play CB comfortably, we just wouldn't need him.
Giggs/Scholes (retire)

LOGIC:
Modric and Martinez are the perfect signings for us IMO. Modric can play CM in a 4-4-2, he can cover out wide (meaning Park becomes useless) and can play in the hole where Rooney plays (allowing Rooney to play up top or be rested).
Martinez can play like a Carrick at CM, or can slot in at CB instead.

Martinez - Modric would likely be our strongest CM pairing but plenty of options and versatility.

Sound logic with only one flaw imo, we will not pay the £40m that Levy will undoubtedly demand for modric. If we were willing to pay that much we probably would have done so last year. If modric does become available, i see no reason why Chelsea would not resume their interest, especially considering that Chelsea was allegedly his preferred destination last summer.

For me Sahin would be a more realistic target, and a better fit for our specific needs. He has not made the impact at Madrid he would have hoped for and as is usually the case with Madrid, those who don't make it there are often shipped out relatively cheaply.

Sahin is still young, has great passing ability and vision and as Dortmund's former captain has already proved he can lead a successful side. I think he could be a very shrewd and potentially brilliant signing for us. A complete midfielder probably for well under £20m. I cannot see another player out there with his ability, at that age, who could be available at a fairly reasonable price. He could well be the top quality bargain SAF has been waiting for.

Was talking to an Everton fan today, he reckons it's pretty well known around Goodison that Rodwell is a United player in waiting. Reckons rumour has it among Everton fans that a deal for the summer was struck when the Gibson deal was made. I'd doubt he's an ITK in fairness, though I wouldn't mind him being right. I'd quite like Rodwell here in the summer.

He was already coming here 18 months ago, yet he still plays for Everton.

But why would you want him here? We have Jones who's in a similar mould to him - not the tallest, but strong, can play the ball, can play in defence or midfield. We've also got Carrick and Fletcher who can play the sitting role in midfield, and Rodwell's nowhere near good enough to play an advanced role for us.

Been constantly hyped during his first couple of years there, and I've no idea what the fuss is about, what is it he's meant to be so good at?

Everton fan I spoke to reckons he's like a stronger version of Gerrard, when's he's fit and in form. Reckons he would be better amongst better players. I don't know, I think he has potential. At the right price I'd have him here, having him come through with the other young English players we have here would be a good thing in my opinion. He looks like the type of signing we'd make.

Rodwell isn't close to be as good at shooting or finishing as Gerrard. Gerrard's ability to get chances and score outside the box made him a force. He provided goals. He's not like Gerrard. Can't see any resemblance.

Fair enough, just seems like it being leant more weight because it's come from an Evertonian.

My first post actually stated that I doubt he's an ITK.

We just got chatting earlier, he told me United would be signing Rodwell and that it's well known among Everton fans. I don't know if I believe him or not but thought I'd mention it as I wouldn't mind it happening. That's all.

Aye, as was said earlier that deal has been 'a cert' for a few years. He looks a good athlete and has had some good games, but personally I have seen nowt, but that says little.

Aye fair enough, mate. I've actually met his agent but I'm not going to be asking him for inside info!

Like I said, the guy I know reckons he'd improve with better players around him. He seems like a United kind of signing, young, British, with room for improvement. At the right price I'd be happy if we signed him, I could see him growing into a very good player here. He has a lot of the attributes needed to be a very good midfielder.

Could all be bollocks though, and most likely is, but then aren't the majority of transfer rumours bollocks? I thought it was interesting and thought I'd mention it.

i don't rate rodwell

Ditto. The CM we bring in should really be a well established one who can make an immediate impact, rather than a youngster. Would rather just give Phil Jones the extra games in midfield than signing Rodwell tbh.

The advantage to signing Rodwell would be having another young English lad to add to our core. We have seen the "Barca effect" of having a nice core of homegrowns from the same country who play for the national team, perhaps Fergie may try to mimic it.

Just please no Henderson or Carroll.

My friends dad writes for the echo on everton issues and said as much also.

How on earth does 33m constitute value.

He is still young, he is one of the best defensive midfielders around and he can play both as a DM and a defender. When one consider that we've spent 30m on a 27 yr old Bulgarian who can't run to save his life, Martinez is mint.

Rest assured that if he didn't had that 33m minimum fee clause then he'll probably cost 10-20m more.
