Summer Transfers

It is very rare that I am dedperate for one particular player to sign for United.

Bale is one such exception. Mafe for United!

Me too, the last I can remember was Rio Ferdinand, I was dying for United to buy him.

Mafe?

Given that Giggs and possibly Scholes, along side the return of Fletch are likely for next summer. Which players do you think will be leaving us and how many inbound transfers do you realistically expect in the summer ?

Well given that we now add Pogba and Morrison to that list, I'd say we will be making a major investment in midfield and at all levels.

With Carrick and Anderson as the only 'established' squad players, and Cleverley as an emerging talent, I'd expect one fully developed midfielder who can slot in straight away (of the Modric/Fabregas/Alonso class) who will cost in the region of 25-30 million, and a world class developing player in the of the Cleverley mould (whats the status of Gourcuff?)

In fact, given that our goalkeeping, defence, wings and forwards department are well stocked and have the right balance of experienced players, developing players and youngsters, I can see us only signing midfielders this summer, see us bringing in with Tunnicliffe returning and so being on the fringes of the squad. Giggs will also still feature.

So I dont think the midfield is as much of an issue as many are making out ... it remains much like last summer, we are just one or two major signings away from having a top quality squad that will be able to compete at the highest levels of the PL and Europe.

Isn't Rodwell massively over rated .... or at least nowhere close to showing any of the hype that has surronded him since he emerged.

I dont want him at all, would rather we bust the bank and go for Wilshire.

Now that's an interesting thought, but one would think highly unlikely, no?

Isn't he Arsenal through and through?

But if they do miss out of CL-footy things could happen at Arsenal.
I'm thinking Wenger and Rvp first and foremost.

Wenger would never sanction selling his biggest emerging star to us. He's surely looking at the likes of Wilshire, Oxlaide, and Walcott as the nucleus from which to build his squad on.

I'd say the following would be a decent Summer for us at the moment:

Out: Owen, Berbatov, De Laet, Macheda, Kuszczak, Pogba (if reports are true) and Bébé

In: Proven top class CM, young(ish) striker (or RVP!)

Wages would be roughly the same, maybe a net spend of £25m.

You didn't do your self any favor there. Even if you are right(but you are not, since Mourinho said that he isn't injured, it's just he isn't physicly ready), my point is still valid. Why do we need a player who can't compete with the likes of Khedira, Lass Diarra or even Coentrao?

As for pysical, those are Mourinho's words, he probably knows more about football than our both.

When he first arrived at RM, he had a bad injury in pre season, and was out injured until around christmas.

He has had a lack of games to get his match fitness back, and is clearly struggling without playing games.

Does that mean he could not compete with khedira / diarra / coentrao?

Im sorry but he is twice the player of these guys on top form.

Why did real madrid buy him if he was just going to sit on the bench and reserves?. His career at RM has not gone to plan yet, but mourinho is clearly saying there he needs to start a fresh next year and get going from the start.

I have no doubts he would star in our midfield if given the chance.

I agree .... but if they miss out on 4th place .... all sorts of things could happen.

With Rooney's ourburst last season, nothing would surprise me regarding a football players 'loyalty' to huis club anymore. And SAF has a track record to bust the bank for brilliant young English players (Robson, Pallister, Ferdinand, Cole, Rooney, Jones etc).

Carrick, Wilshire & Jones would make for an amazing middle 3, hoping that Anderson can eventually replace Carrick.

I thought we had just execrcised our extra year option on his contract? Or have we done that to increase his sale value?

I would still want Berbatov at the club next year as Hernandez and Welbeck still have alot of developing to do. Rooney will miss games next year through suspension, minor injuries or God forfid a long lay off. I would not to just tp have to rely on Welbeck and Hernandez in that situation,no matter that they are both incredible prospected long term talents.

And if not?

Well our injuries next season hopefully won't be as bad as this season.

If Fletcher doesn't get back, I'd like to sign a full back and move Jones full time into CM. He's probably played there more than anywhere else, and for me he's looked at best in that position.

I think full back is the weakest area of our squad, and Carrick/Cleverly/Anderson/Jones/Giggs (hopefully Fletcher) seems like a top class midfield to me.

As I said earlier, there's only 1 guarantee there, Carrick.

You can't always rely on ifs and buts, which pretty much every other one of those midfielders is.

But then, even if our midfield consisted of decrepit 90 year olds, you'd still think it was fine Twigg.

It's not top class, for it to be top class you have to ask yourself how many of those would get into our rivals teams and bar maybe Carrick and Giggs the other 3 are a big fat no.

As good as Carrick is we should be in a position where he's second/third choice rather than having to rely on him and if a player like Carrick is third choice that speaks volumes of quality we'd have if we did buy one or two top class central midfielder's

Pretty sure that a few of our not-so-young youngsters might leave in the summer. Norwood, James, Brady and even possibly King (hopefully not though), aswell as PIG and Owen.

It's pretty impossible to predict who we'll bring in though, as most fans have been calling for a midfielder signing for the past couple of seasons. Things might've changed now that Pogba and Morrison both have gone, though Morrison was more of an attacker. Petrucci will either get a loan or become a part of the 1th team squad next season, can't see him leaving in the near future.

We've been linked to a fair few left backs this year though, and I think that Fergie just recently spoke of Fabio as an option on the right and not the left not too long ago (I might be mistaken on this one). Then again, we have Fryers coming through but it seems to be an issue with his contract these days aswell (Though I might be reading too much in the fact that Thorpe is now training with the first team ahead of the EL-game rather then Zeki)

Kuszczak is cert to leave IMO. Owen and Berbatov look increasingly likely to leave too, and I wouldn't be surprised seeing the back of Park (opens up a spot for another winger). de Laet is a goner too.

So, including Ben Amos who was born in 1990 (not sure whether he'll stay due to registering reasons) we'll have 22 spots occupied within the first team which leaves room for improvement.

GK: No one needed
RB: Rafael, Jones, Smalling
LB: Evra, Fabio, Fryers
CB: Vidic, Ferdinand, Evans, Smalling Jones

We could do with another defender, preferably a centre- or right-back. Or maybe we'll just use someone like Thorpe or Veseli at the back.

CM: Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson, Scholes, Giggs (Fletcher), Tunnicliffe, Petrucci

Can't see us buying a central midfielder.

LW/RW: Nani, Valencia, Young (Giggs), Brady (?)

In case Park leaves the club a fourth winger is required. Do not want to see us play Giggs out wide too often, leaves too much space exposed as he usually comes inside quite a lot. The Gaitan story gained a lot of legs a couple of months ago so don't be surprised if the interest is genuine.

ST: Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez, Macheda

With so many attacking options in midfield Fergie might gamble and take these four players as our striking options. We hardly used Owen and Berbatov this year, so Macheda being fourth choice won't hinder our campaign IMO (and there is still Will Keane).

So... I expect another winger to come in, maybe a defender, but taking our wage bill into account I would be VERY surprised if there will be more than one big signing.

Park's only recently signed a new contract, a contract that ends at the end of next season. I think next season will be his last (he's spoken of retirement/going back to Korea)

I just feel that, particularly given the huge increase in our wage bill this season, we are not going to bring in a top quality central midfielder without having to dispense with a few earners elsewhere.

The only player who would free up the £5-6m a year and who wouldn't really weaken the squad if he left is Berbatov. All those other players combined would probably only free up £80k a week.

Sneijder. Van Der Vaart.

Out: PIG, Bebe, De Laet, Owen, Pogba(?), Berbatov, Park, Macheda.

In: Midfielder (I feel it'll be somebody like Gaitan or Eriksen). A striker to replace our outgoing strikers, and possibly a winger to replace Park.

I think that would be a good summer transfer window.

out: nani park berba owen (possibly Pogba)
in: rodwell gaitan eriksen (if Pogba leaves)

I accidentally deleted bale from the in list (fat fingers/phone). Sorry if some of you were worried, and hope the addition of bale cheers you up a bit! The futures bright. (plus pogbas signed a contract with juve by all accounts so I can remove the brackets).

I doubt anybody worries about anything based on the content of yours posts.

I think we will see a busy summer. We made some progress clearing out the excess last summer, we need to continue that this year.

The obvious three are Berbatov, Owen and PIG. I would add Anderson and maybe Park to the departures list, and Macheda too.

Seems quite a hefty list but I don't think any of them are really that important to the squad. I like Park and I like Anderson, but the latter has still not lived up to his promise, and the former has been a great servant to us but is rarely used anymore and if we are trying to get the wage bill down, seems an obvious choice.

IN, I've just posted in the other thread about Modric and think he would be pretty much the perfect player for us - he can cover for Rooney, can play wide (thus fill Parks role) and play in a two man CM pairing, where we badly need some quality.

Add to that a defensive midfielder like Martinez, and we are left with a great looking squad, for me.

Would be great getting a Martinez and Modric type player but would rather get a Bale and Martinez type as think we could be doing with a left footer out on left wing and with Bale he offers better quality cover/competition for Evra that imho we don't have.

Since Scholes, Giggs, and Fletch may not be available in 12-14 months from now, it's likely we will buy at least 2 midfielders.

I wouldn't say likely but we should

I too don't think it's likely but at least it should be more likely than last Summer as there have been quite a few new players emerging - Spanish lads, Inler, Eriksen etc. Although I still think Ferguson is perfectly happy with this midfield and will only buy if someone truly special becomes available at a decent price.

What I think we need.

Attacking Midfielder - Ball playing, creative midfielder who can unlock defenses either with his passing or his dribbling and short interplay with our forwards. Ideal candidate - Gotze / Munian / Hazard / Modric

Anchor Midfielder / Deep laying playmaker - Ball winner, strong tackler, someone who can provide the outlet pass and also cover the back four. Ideal - Javi Martinez / M'Villa

Striker - A big man who provides a threat on set pieces, corners and can finish crosses. Would be an additional bonus if he has a good touch. Ideal choice - Llorente / Cavani.

Left / Right Back - Someone who can challenge Evra for what seems his tenured position. Fabio could maybe do the job but he's injured 300 days out of the year it seems...Ideal candidate - Leighton Baines / Aly Cissokho.

Centre Back - Someone with experience at the highest level to provide cover if either Vida / Rio are injured long term. Smalling and Jones both far too raw to play a major portion of the season without experience and it's risky given Rio / Vida's injury record. Ideal - Vertonghen / Mamadou Sakho.

We'll probably end up signing none of these players...but there you go. That's my dream list.

If we don't buy a midfielder this summer, we'll end up playing Amos in midfield next season...mark my words. We'll end up playing a fecking third string reserve keeper as an attacking midfielder. That's how dire shit will get if the gaping black hole that is our midfield isn't filled.

We don't need a big man. We've never played with a man like that. None of the current best teams do. Rarely is the big man anything more than big. The two men you named are players who generally play and score all sorts. Like Drogba. Height and strength is a bonus with them.

We need a left back. Those you mentioned aren't better than Evra. Not really that good defenders in all honesty.

We've got three experienced center backs and two up and comers. Our best center back has been out. That's an obvious miss. But he needn't not be replaced. We've got 5 good ones. Our number three and four are better than 2 or 3 at most teams.

I'm most for the type of player who can play AML/AMC/2nd striker. Muniain, Götze, Hazard. I'd like that. Traditional winger on the left is almost non-existent and I don't think Young is good enough to be a non-challenged starter with his right foot on the left.

I approve of your anchor midfield choice. Someone who can play instead and/or with Carrick.

Actually I don't think we need all of those players. I think that even with the injuries some of our players have underperformed. I don't know why but something to do with the conditioning prepartion (which partly explains all the injuries) and the lack of quality in the passing.

We're not comfortable passing in tight spaces any more which didn't always used to be the case. I've lost count of how many times we're passing behind the onrunning player - and these are just short passes. Something wrong with the setup I think - I've not seen a team this poor in Europe for over 10 years!

Out:
Kuzc, Owen, Berba, Park, Evra
Out on Loan:
Pogba(if ando, clev stay fit. with scholes and carrick in there, he might not get enough opportunities)
In:
Left Back, Javi Martinez, Forward(either a lavezzi kinda guy playing behind wazza or convert a winger like hazard to play behind wazza).

We need some quality on the ball in the opposition's half. Our wingers are under too much pressure, they have all the responsibility in attack and all the attention of opposition defenders. with someone with an attacking threat through the middle, there will be more balance.
