He had his chance to join us and would just be another Di Maria .. Last thing we need

Except Di Maria wanted to go to PSG originally instead of us. James would likely be able to pick. Also if we didn't go after players that chose Real madrid over us, we'd be crazy. Few players in recent years would join us over Madrid, no reason to hold it against them.

And you know this how?

James is actually a really good player, I'd love to see him here at the expense of Rooney. However, I'd still prefer we got a proper winger (Draxler for example, or Mahrez) and play Mkhitaryan at #10.

Maybe he was telling the players how he wants them to play next season and was casually dropping Pogba's name in there?

If we don't get our man, maybe the club will make a desperate move in the last day of the market, like they did in the past. But I don't think that James is a priority for Mourinho.

It's pretty obvious that Mendes wants a move and Madrid too, I think.

I think we need to stop benchmarking against absurd deals to justify pricing for any player. Examples of Luiz, Carroll etc are outliers.

Anyways to your point,
1. Luiz isn't worthe 50m
2. Luiz was sold at a much younger age (Koscielny is 30+)
3. Luiz is more marketable

Ofcourse Koscielny is the better defender but next to Thiago Silva, Luiz has done well. I think they would do well to get 50m for him. All this is hypothetical anyways as I dont think they will sell him and even if they do, getting 50m from ( I assume) a non EPL club will be difficult
Not really. The pricing on CB is kinda up now. Bailly would not be 30 mil pound defender few years ago (even last summer). Koulibaly would not be 45 mil Euro, Hummels would not fork defender record from Bayern with only 1 year left on his Dortmund contract, Stones is touted at 50 mil (increased after a bad season. So only potential and English tax that would cost this much)

This x 1000

It annoys me greatly when people pick a poorly thought out big transfer and say "Oh well he's worth.......because x"

Suarez cost the dippers 22m
Carroll 35m

No prizes for guessing which of the two is always used.

Or to put another way, was every player worth less than 1m after we had signed Eric Cantona?

Are we looking to buy half of a starting xi this window?

Bailly
Zlatan
Mkhitaryan
Pogba*
Fabinho

Let's take Dave out of the equation and that's 5/10 starting positions filled if the last two come in.

After what the last manager pissed about doing, yeah, we need to. Out of thr playerd he brought in. It looks like only 3 have a chance of staying on. Martial, Schniederlin and Darmian with Shaw and Herrera being Moyes buys.

Not getting Jose in 2013 set us back a long way. Add a potential new CB and most of the team has been rebuilt.

Even more if the James rumor has some leg. No surprise since the quality gap between our starting XI and subs was very close under LVG. People have been complaining a lot of lack of quality in starting XI after all

Mourinho gave him senior debut at Real Madrid and seems to rate him highly (didn't have time to integrate him more ). Seems like a Mourinho player too: solid defensively, physical capable and not lack attacking ability neither.

Oh I have no problem with it, but there were quite a few saying such a thing wouldn't happen in the "we need 7 players" thread in the United part of this forum.

If/when all these signing come in, we'll be unrecognisable from last season's iteration.

You can see why Jose wants these signings in ASAP - there's a hell of a lot of integration and synergy to be worked on before the season is underway with so many new players coming in.

He can play as a DM which is interesting too.

I would probably have been one of those that said we don't need lots of player's, but that's probably after having my expectations altered over the last 3 years and getting to the point where i would have been happy/relieved with a top 4 finish (I'm not saying i would be celebrating).

If we are going big and shipping out a load of player's as well then i would be thinking that a title challenge is coming.

French media have heavily linked him to us before. When nothing happened there, they then linked him to City.

It's not really surprising that nothing happened, last season he was among the non-transferable players, so if United came for him Monaco probably asked for a huge fee. But this season, he is transferable.

What's changed? Do they have a new right back or was a promise made to the player?

They've brought in two promising full-backs.

Marseille winger Georges Kevin Nkoudou has decided to join Tottenham Hotspur in a €13m deal

What the hell does this even mean? And how does L'Equipe know this?

There's a whole article about this. Basically, they say that Woodward has discussed the situation with Raiola thanks to their many recent meetings for other players. No offer yet as Woodward would like to be sure Pogba would be opened to the move. They say that Mourinho considers this done, from Portuguese sources around him. Pogba wouldn't be against a comeback and Raiola's latest interview about him not rushed and Juventus wanting to extend the contract is interpreted as a chess move to push a transfer that would break the 100M€ bar. Woodward knows Ferguson did not want to hear about Raiola but is behaving according Mourinho's wishes. The latter would use him as central midfielder on the left and if it does not happen Matuidi would be another option - his agent is Raiola as well. Woodward/Raiola discussions going on before a probable first offer to Juve.

Nothing, every summer there is a list of players who are free to leave, if they want and if the money is right. Fabinho is now among these players.

I haven't seen much of him but strikes me as a bit like a Valencia who can defend. Strong likes to get forward but final ball isn't great. Is that a fair assessment?

He is like Neville, a vintage fullback who isn't bad going forward, from time to time you see him do something crazy around the opposing box as if he was channeling his inside Daniel Alves but that's rare and probably a fluke.

You had me at Neville, I want! :)

Is he any good and better than Valencia/TFM at RB?
Valencia really isn't as bad at RB as a lot of our fans seem to make out. Fabinho though is already at the same level (similar in style too) if not already slightly ahead of him and is only 22 years old.
As long as he doesn't cost us the earth then the signing makes a lot of sense, although probaby not completely necessary just yet.
