Television Succession

But I despise them already

I’m not gonna try and twist your arm but I’ll just say you’re missing out and it’s legit top tier TV, in the conversation for best show ever made if they stick the landing with the end.

I know I'll have to give it a go. My wife just added it to the list of shows to watch.

And now for something gloriously geeky - an FT journalist has taken a crack at Waystar, the share structure and the valuations.

We just watched episode 2. Very solid so far.

I think if they nail this season (and they are so far) then this show will belong in the pantheon of the greatest shows of all time. Not sure where I would rank it personally, but it's definitely in the conversation.

Another positive thing about it is the restraint they've shown. Deciding to end it after this season is a good move. Even some great shows can feel a little baggy and too long when they taste success and just can't stop themselves. Just another example of the people behind this show being almost flawless in their decision-making.

Shiv will kill her baby, drinking whiskey and taking coke just after getting good news about the pregnancy. I think there are twists coming still, Roman hates the guy. Something nasty is getting leaked.

Perfect episode to show the CEBros are out of their depth. In real world they can still get away with it by hiring an army of strategists around them and not making any big play around such deals. But within a fictionalised world, was good to see them being pompous airheads. They ultimately had other reasons to try to tank the deal but both had almost no inkling if they were being given a good deal by Matsson or not. They were paralysed by dependency on dad's opinion for such decisions.

Shiv's convo with Matsson had me intrigued. I thought it introduced "Chekov's blood" which Shiv would eventually use in coming episodes to tank the deal. But on official podcast, it was suggested that it was just another kind of power play by Matsson. Not my take at all and not confirmed by writing team yet.

My current prediction for end game is Tom and Shiv getting back together in some semi-personal and professional capacity by the end and "winning" over the other siblings.

I think they did not show her doing code. Will check again. But she was definitely drinking.

Matsson needs to buy it for some reason, he's hiding something for sure.

I thought the whole sending Ebba his blood thing was a hint that it's tip of the iceberg stuff with him (hence he just casually tells Shiv) and owning ATN would be his way of attempting to control the narrative. Seems like he wants to be a Swedish Logan Roy - he's already pretty similar with his attitude to bidding and buying businesses, plus his way of demeaning people is actually quite similar to Logan.

This season has had consistently tip top episodes. Ending dependent, it's definitely in the conversation for best tv show of all time.

I wonder if the iceman comment was a reference to the brilliant Generation Kill, where Skarsgård played Brad "Iceman" Colbert.
Caught that, but was it Mattson that called Kendall that? Would have to rewatch.

My absolute favorite line from this episode was "I don't care what you think, you're just a tribute band".

Mattson is a brilliant character. Actually happy Roman called him out on his BS and disrespect, but Mattson just one-upped them by offering more.

This is insanely good tv this season.

Matsson doing their heads in is brilliant. Both of the brothers are absolute arseholes, and have shown it many times throughout the show, so seeing them eat a little in return, yeah, gotta be done

Also, she totally didn't do coke and what minimal whiskey she drank is ultra unlikely to be a major issue to be fair, even if it's against the no-drinking decision she's already made even earlier in the pregnancy, but the fact they've actually showed her drinking it probably means it will lead to something, so yeah, forget me.

To be fair Mattson was proven to be in the right with that rant?

Very consistently good this season. I knew Mattson would just offer more to one up them. The blood thing was wtf

Also Frank and Karl putting compression socks on was fantastic

Good episode, nice enviroment.

Seems weird that they wanted to tank the deal but didn't want to include Shiv, even though she wasn't interested in selling ATN anyway.

It's a reference to Lindelof's penalty last night.

Absolute gut punch of a line.
