Television Succession

“Oh look it’s the March of the emperor penguins”

Mathison has shown throughout he’s a way better businessman than the siblings and he saw through their bullshit in an instant and fecked them. Great telly.

agreed that he clearly wants ATN as some sort of propaganda machine for himself.

Perfect episode to show the CEBros are out of their depth. In real world they can still get away with it by hiring an army of strategists around them and not making any big play around such deals. But within a fictionalised world, was good to see them being pompous airheads. They ultimately had other reasons to try to tank the deal but both had almost no inkling if they were being given a good deal by Matsson or not. They were paralysed by dependency on dad's opinion for such decisions.

Shiv's convo with Matsson had me intrigued. I thought it introduced "Chekov's blood" which Shiv would eventually use in coming episodes to tank the deal. But on official podcast, it was suggested that it was just another kind of power play by Matsson. Not my take at all and not confirmed by writing team yet.

My current prediction for end game is Tom and Shiv getting back together in some semi-personal and professional capacity by the end and "winning" over the other siblings.

They aren't out of their depth they just don't have any cards to play. They're interim CEOs, of a company who's board and shareholder's goals are different to their own, vs a guy who's net worth is likely more than the entire value of their company. No one could make that work, if logan was in the same position he couldn't tank the deal, he'd likely have a little more leeway since he'd have more friends on the board, and he appointed most of the old guard so they wouldn't work against his interests, but realistically if the board and shareholders want a sale then there's nothing any ceo could do against someone with as much money as mattson

I haven't tried White Lotus and never finished series 1 of Mad Men

White Lotus and Succession are both very entertaining despite having almost no likeable characters.

Succession is dark and fascinating but White Lotus is just great fun.

The kids are clearly idiots, but I think people are a bit too high on Matsson in this episode. He got one over on the boys, but only by offering so much that the board literally couldn't refuse. He also opened up to Shiv about a massive vulnerability.

When it comes to the actual business end, Shiv is totally lost. But when it comes to the personal stuff and skeletons in the closet stuff, as we saw last night (it was a proper long segment), she is smart and savvy enough to use it against you or help you. That's the gamesmanship she has but the actual business acumen she falls behind her brothers. Remember, Shiv is afraid she'll be left out or not included. Kendall and Roman have consistently said, hey let's be sure to include Shiv and inform her, etc. etc.

Now looks like Shiv has stuff about Mattison and his company. That's big time stuff.

And it's extremely interesting and fun to see everyone's own agenda play out within close proximity, knowing their agendas cannot be farther from each other. The Old Heads, thinking about the shareholders and company overall, Kendall and Roman thinking about what Logan built and how they want to uphold his legacy (and the fact they are still trying to process his passing as a person/father, in addition to how it impacts the company during the sales process and perception, and how it holds a role within the government/Presidency). Then there's Shiv and Tom's passive aggressive relationship, knowing Shiv has something in the oven...but does Tom know? And then there's fecking Greg trying to weasel his way into the Kids group but not sure how well he's with Tom, knowing Tom's safety net is gone and his marriage is shit.

Con is back home doing who knows what, but he's got direct vision with Marcia...she could wreck shit up tomorrow.

So many plot lines and nobody really knows where this is headed. Amazing amazing.

Likelihood is that he’s played Shiv. He will probably wind back the deal, reveal to the brothers that she played them, reveal to the board that Ken and Roman were trying to rank the deal and then wait while chaos ensues.

Pulled that guess out of my arse obviously but there is clearly going to be a few twists like that yet.

Agreed.

She's almost entirely driven by her insecurities, case in point being spiteful about her brothers getting to lead the negotiations, despite this actually being based on solid reasoning rather than backstabbing. And as she's desperate to get even, it just so happens that their adversary really likes her, flatters her a bit and needs her help on an unrelated matter.. ..right...

I think Ken and Roman are the reasonable people here, they didn't have a good hand and they played the card(s) they had. Whereas Shiv seems to think she operates on an even level with the person, who even bullied Logan a bit.

Mathison is way too smart to tell Shiv something like that. It would be so out of place if it wasn’t intentional bullshit to play her.

Speaking from experience, psilocybin at breakfast can make one act a tad different (it seems that all hours are equal opportunities to imbibe to him).

The writing felt very Thick of It that episode. Especially the “Chairman Mattson’s reeducation camp” line from Shiv.

fecking quality, hopefully Jesse Armstrong can churn something new and hilarious after this. He’s a different level when it comes to writing.

Hugo nicking all of the food and on the warpath

I must admit I start cringing everytime Greg tries to get in with the kids.
There was a seemingly lot of cringe this episode. Tom, & Greg later, sitting outdoors with the Swedes was a huge one.

Greg seems a bit like they don't know what to do with him this season. He had an arc up til the end of season 3, but now that logan has died we don't even seem to know what his position in the company is. I assume ewan will make another appearance at the funeral. On another note, do will readings typically happen before or after a funeral, they haven't mentioned logan's will yet, I'm wondering if its still to come or if its just happened off screen, cos there would be an awful lot happening when the inheritance is still to be decided

Why are they letting Greg hang around? At least when Logan was around you could say he was spying for him. Seems like they are literally just keeping him around for laughs.

Was just thinking about the will, surely everyone would have been all over that.

I think this is the first episode where Mathison has also been exposed as a irrational and immature business person, same as all the others in the show. This show constantly portrays these billionaires as idiots who act on emotion.

I don't see his actions as part of some grand plan, think he's more of a Musk esque tech bro who is doing it for the memes / petty revenge.

I thought it fit his character pretty well. He's incredibly self-obsessed, and seems erratic enough to both do something like that and then tell someone about it. There's an angle for sure, but I think the angle is more spiting the boys by making friends with their sister (who they had shut out). I thought maybe he was even trying to recruit her.

Band of Brothers is a mini-series though and Chernobyl is probably just as good.

Succession for me is currently just below The Wire and The Sopranos alongside Mad Men, The Leftovers, and Breaking Bad (if they stick the landing)

A mini-series is just a TV series with one season, I don't see the difference. Chernobyl, Band of Brothers, Watchmen, Wolf Hall occupy the same space in my head as The Wire, The Leftovers, etc. Not to say that they're all equally good, but they're the same kind of thing.

Sopranos is overrated :nervous: (but still great)

Definitely a tier or two below Mad Men and Breaking Bad.

I've still never watched Mad Men. Even people who love it say there are large stretches where it's just boring.
