Aye, I've seen it called a brilliant tackle - it's anything but.Is there really nothing wrong with the Mata challenge? Every time I watch it it looks worse & worse but all the 'knowledgeable' pundits don't seem to think there was anything wrong with it.
He doesn't play the ball at all, as far as I can see, & goes straight through the player.

Just love the thought process behind it. 'I'll get stuck in, leave my mark and rile up the United players who in turn will try to get revenge and get caught by the... oh shit I'm off'
Isn't apologising great? I just bricked an old granny walking down the street and robbed her but then apologised so all was well and I am now being awarded a medal for bravery.
That's what I think - I'm either blind or the pundits are ABU starfish lovers. Is there really nothing wrong with the Mata challenge? Every time I watch it it looks worse & worse but all the 'knowledgeable' pundits don't seem to think there was anything wrong with it.

Did Slippy Starfish apologise to the man he stamped on ??Good flobbin' griefz. Henry Winter's written a piece titled 'The inside story of Steven Gerrard's Tv Apology: Captain did not hide after being sent off - his determination to apologise for embarrassing his beloved club was the mark of the man.' Ian Herbert goes with 'Gerrard's accomplishments are greater than those of Giggs and Scholes.' Meanwhile, Adrian Durham leads with 'You're All Twats and Your Mum's a Tart - Phone in now. PS Football.'

As Gerrard made that walk of shame towards the tunnel, gleeful United supporters sent him on his way with the usual terrace hat-trick of “cheerio” chants, V signs and hand gestures mimicking the shaking of a dice.

As far as I remember it was pretty nasty stuff. Some refs could have sent him off for it, most would probably give him a yellow. I haven't seen the one which got Kompany sent off against Nani(?) in a while, but I recall it was pretty similar. Is there really nothing wrong with the Mata challenge? Still don't see why Herrera was booked.
He slides in front of Gerrard to block the pass, no contact was intended and wasn't out of control. He's in so much control he retracts his leg and ends up sliding along on it.
In the referees head he thinks Gerrard overreacted to a bad tackle so thought the tackle must be punished as well.
Makes no sense
They sure know how to do apologies over there, don't they?
(tbf, Evans should have included one after the spitting thing)
I'll ask a question Football365 asked on their site. Why do we give people like Gerrard credit for "fronting up?"
Well he graced the occasion with his presence. That's worth a point, la, if not all 10.Somehow in their rankings Rojo got a 0, whilst Gerrard got a 1. Surely being able to last on the pitch is worthy of getting a higher score than someone who trotted on then trotted back off again because of a red card....
Yea, that point seems to have been overlooked in all the hoo-ha. Never a booking.Still don't see why Herrera was booked.

On US TV the pundits all thought it was worthy of action by the ref and were surprised. Is there really nothing wrong with the Mata challenge? Every time I watch it it looks worse & worse but all the 'knowledgeable' pundits don't seem to think there was anything wrong with it.

Yeah, that is the old fashioned view. And he could in the old days because the cameras and referee might miss it. Now the cameras see everything, and close up, and the best he could hope for is to stay on the pitch and get a retrospective ban. Like his Slovak friend. He probably thought he'd get away with it (for obvious reasons.)
The best bit was the lino clocking it, you can clearly see him telling the ref "stamp, red card" as soon as he did it from one of the camera angles.Yeah, that is the old fashioned view.
