He's never been top central midfielder.
I disagree, and I don't think of myself as rating Gerrard.
He was always confused or just not alert defensively and never the pass and move player that most top CM's are but he still somehow got there in terms of overall effectiveness. Not surprising England never won with him as he's not the most flexible in some ways (despite being versatile), but at a club level, get a good DM to mop up behind him and a good passing CM to play next to or slightly behind him and you'd have had a fine midfield.
Today was a decent microcosm of his career. Poor defensively, couldn't dictate play with his intelligence or passing but made a real difference and his engine, desire, offensive instincts, creativity and shooting/long passing accuracy meant his performance was a significant net positive.
In his prime, he had more energy and so wasn't really a liability defensively.
Look at it this way. If we'd signed Gerrard in 2002 and he'd played the next 8-10 years in lineups like this:
-------RVN/Rooney--------
Giggs-----------Beckham/Ronaldo
---Gerrard--Scholes---
-----Keane/Carrick----
He'd have won multiples titles as a key player, even if we we were somewhat destabilized in Europe.
I need a drink. Can't believe I wrote all that semi-positive stuff. I think I just feel a bit bad for him after watching his teammates be so horrid and seeing him drag his rapidly aging self forward to almost give his team a great chance to win it (if the keeper had fouled him it would have been a red and a pen and Basel probably concede another at that point, I'm guessing, no disrespect to them, but they were knackered and it was a tough situation) and then hit a great free kick to give them a last gasp.
