Steven Gerrard

I fully expect him to score against us in the weekend, because he's that kind of cnut.

Ahh Kostur. You always amuse me. You cry whenever anyone calls a United player poor or says anything bad about them, yet you do the exact same thing to every non-United player.

You've just perfectly summed me up there Barney, can't really argue with that.

I wonder however, how is that relevant to this thread? If you feel a need to make a thread about me crying about our players, please do so, but stop with this nonsense here.

He was terrible until he scored that free kick though. Gerrard should have come on in the last 20 minutes and they should have started with Coutinho, Sterling and Lallana.

Class free-kick tbf but that'll probably be that for him in the CL. Unless he does a Lampard and moves to City.

He'll go down as their 2nd greatest player. He's over now, obviously, but for all the stick we give him, he's been a fantastic player for them, and often dragged them out of the mire single handed. As Mike said, he probably should've left when he had the chance. Depends what you want from a career though.

That free kick will completely gloss over the fact he was anonymous for the rest of the game. Long may it continue!

Intact kneecaps in his case. Fans of most clubs seem to forget he'd have been off years ago if they hadn't threatened him.

I would have liked to see him in a bigger club to see if he really was a 'top, top player' as SAF put it or just a big fish in a small pond.

Please tell me you do not actually believe that is why he did not leave.

It's not like he's had a Le Tissier-like career, he's scored in the finals of the Champions League, the Europa, the FA and the League Cup. You could say the same for Maldini or Giggs if repeating his form at others clubs is your criteria. He's earned his reputation tbf. Fergie was harsh on him.

One of the most consistently laughable things on here is when people try to claim he isn't technically great, he is as good as Scholes technically, it's only Scholes brain that he can run a game from deep far better.

Still think it's his last year.

Interesting way to put it. Probably some merit in it too.

His set-piece deliveries are still world class. Don't understand why Liverpool have Coutinho taking certain corners.

Stevie G is one of the best players to have ever played for Liverpool.
He is a big game player - anonymous for most of the game then BHAM! Scores.
This is the guy who will probably score against Man Utd on Sunday.

He's clearly been a 'top, top player' throughout his career.

I fully respect Gerrard and while he's no longer the player he was, I don't think there's a team that wouldn't have loved to have had him as theirs. He's been a loyal servant for Liverpool.

Nevertheless, he can do one next weekend.

Still very good at free kicks, corners, penalties. Not so good in open play nowadays. Don't think Rodgers quite knows how to use him this season.

He was amazing at being the spare man in the middle of the park. Kind of a midfielder, but not quite.

The best midfielders (like Keane, Essien, Vieira, Davids, etc.) could prevent talented opposition players from playing whilst simultaneously dominating games themselves. Gerrard was more the man you built the team around. He was capable of doing a bit of everything but, more often than not, it was his teammates who were actually tasked with setting the platform for him to do the special stuff.

That nay be true but then that difference applies to so many comparisons between truly great players and ones who had the talent but didn't reach the levels they could. Gerrard has an excellent passing range and a wonderful shot on him but would you take him over any of other true greats during his career?

I think SAF was referring to the greats of the Premier League like Scholes, Keane, Vieira etc. with that comment. Gerrard has never consistently shown he's at their level, but I don't know if that's down to him or the shortcomings of the team he's played in. Certainly a brilliant player though, noone can argue that.

He's never been top central midfielder.

I disagree, and I don't think of myself as rating Gerrard.

He was always confused or just not alert defensively and never the pass and move player that most top CM's are but he still somehow got there in terms of overall effectiveness. Not surprising England never won with him as he's not the most flexible in some ways (despite being versatile), but at a club level, get a good DM to mop up behind him and a good passing CM to play next to or slightly behind him and you'd have had a fine midfield.

Today was a decent microcosm of his career. Poor defensively, couldn't dictate play with his intelligence or passing but made a real difference and his engine, desire, offensive instincts, creativity and shooting/long passing accuracy meant his performance was a significant net positive.

In his prime, he had more energy and so wasn't really a liability defensively.

Look at it this way. If we'd signed Gerrard in 2002 and he'd played the next 8-10 years in lineups like this:

-------RVN/Rooney--------
Giggs-----------Beckham/Ronaldo
---Gerrard--Scholes---
-----Keane/Carrick----

He'd have won multiples titles as a key player, even if we we were somewhat destabilized in Europe.

I need a drink. Can't believe I wrote all that semi-positive stuff. I think I just feel a bit bad for him after watching his teammates be so horrid and seeing him drag his rapidly aging self forward to almost give his team a great chance to win it (if the keeper had fouled him it would have been a red and a pen and Basel probably concede another at that point, I'm guessing, no disrespect to them, but they were knackered and it was a tough situation) and then hit a great free kick to give them a last gasp.

He somehow always scores against us, and I can't see it changing this weekend.

I will be his team's barometer. If has the tempo and can pass the ball, then they'll be dangerous.

He should move to Juve or Roma next season to get a chance at finishing his career with a league title.

I still think it's his last season. He's broken, knows there's nothing to play for with Liverpool and the club want his role/privileges/power decreased with his next contract.
