Steven Gerrard

Gerrard stepped up and threw away the league when Suarez insane hot streak went cold. BarneyITK is surely not that dense, defend your player but don't make things up.

@grahamo completely the opposite. Said everything right that. It's not won until it won. Not true about him touting the big time Charlie over it.

Not only is his performance this season completely overstated, it also completely ignores the fact that, playing as a DM, he offered little to no cover to his defence and wasn't completely innocent in how Liverpool kept leaking goals. He's tactically very weak and provides absolutely no balance in midfield. It may have been about ok in the PL this season, but he's looked completely out of place as soon as he faced strong teams (Silva ran rings around him if I recall correctly, and he was just silly against Chelsea), and looked very bad against a good Italian midfield the other night. Him and Baines looked completely lost. A lot of us on here said he'd come up short in the World Cup with England, it's already shown against Italy. He might do okay against the next two teams depending on how the games shape up, but if we do get out of the group and face a strong team, it'll just be the same all over again. Henderson isn't helping though, he's not ready for international stage (not that he should be, he's got little to no experience of top level).

Not that there's many solutions. The only English alternative would've been the Carrick of 12/13, but there's not depth in midfield at all, with all options having their downfalls.

Also, let me guess: did the English media reckon he had a good game?

Gerard didn't influence the game as much as he used to but to compare him to Pirlo is just pointless. There are few players that can get near Pirlo as a tempo controller and play maker in a game. He was the perfect composer on Saturday. Englands game was actually quite good from the point of view that they went to have a go at Italy using pace and got behind them a few times. They were unlucky not to have 3 goals in the game. Gerard's strength used to be an extra burst to change a game. He's gone back into he holding role and does it well enough to be the best English player in that role this season but he's nowhere near Pirlo in controlling a game. England's high attrition game just didn't give them a chance in the conditions and Italy finished the stronger. I don't think Gerard was to blame but I do think England played well and were a little unlucky.

He really is shit defensively isn't he ? Barry would of gave England a better balance in the team next to Henderson but for some reason he was overlooked.

This forum hates everyone except Nani. Nani for Ballon d'Or 2014.

Enough is enough now, let's have some appreciation for captain hypocrisy please. If it wasn't for his ineptitude against Chelsea and arguing with the ref instead of chasing back against palace we would have been listening to a never ending stream of self congratulation from scousers and the ex dippers in the media all summer long,

Not to mention being too busy having a tantrum for not getting a penalty to properly defend the equaliser at Selhurst...

Heh.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke. Serial bottler.

Classic Slippard. Too bad he won't get the shit Wayne got. Horrible in both games, biggest liability in the England squad.

even ebfore the goal, i was thinking he should be ashamed of himself for the shit he plays. And has the temerity to bark orders.

The c*nts will still all pile on Rooney, who got an assist when started on the left, and a goal when started centrally.

This despite Gerrard and Henderson - who constitute a midfield in theory only - being utterly, outrageously poor in both games, and the defence generally look like what they are: decent upper mid-table players, but nowhere near World Class.

The biggest cock blocker in modern football. Ruined it for Liverpool and England.

Of course it's Rooney's fault who only got one assist and goal already...

I've said it already after the Italy match, he's finished mentally, he's like a sponge. There's no getting back from where he went after that slip. RIP Stevie. Shame he took England with him.

He certainly did drive you to second in the league. Unfortunately for you, though, you were in first place before that.

Three most memorable Stevie G plays.....his back pass to Drogba to help Chelsea win the title....his slip to give away Liverpools chance for the title ......and his header assist to Suarez today. I kid

another cracking backpass for the folder.

That header could not possibly have gone worse
