Steven Gerrard

oh im sorry, he did a fantastic job leading his team as evidenced by the capitulation that could yet cost them the title. or was it his slip that might cost them the title?

he'll be kicking himself for a long time for not getting the teams heads right last night at 3-1. just awful.

That lack of intelligence is glaring to me.

He isn't, fans feel like it's either world class or bust when describing players. You can have a very good career and not be world class.

I would put Gerrard in the bracket below the very best.

What is this intelligence you speak of?

The passes he chooses to make, the positions he takes up. He used to lose his man constantly, the lung bursting runs back covered that up. He gives the ball away a lot. Technically he is all there for me (for the most part), but he just lacks know how. Even at his best in midfield he couldn't dictate a game, control the flow of a game the way the best cm's of his generation could.

The intelligence is what separated him from the very best in my opinion.

He's a very talented but largely brainless player (see nonsense display after they went a goal down to Chelsea). CM is all about brains (and running).

Why must you have to "dictate a game" to be in this tier?

What goes on with players like him, and Lampard, is that boxes are made for what the classic midfielder must be. "Oh, he needs to control the game very well. Gerrard and Lampard don't, end of story". The same thing with Ronaldo. "Oh he can't dictate a game and control a game, he's not an all time great".

I'm being lazy with this reply just because I've had this conversation over and over again.

Now this is a story all about how,
Gerrard slipped up and hit the ground.
So I'd like to take a minute to laugh at that fool,
I'll tell you how he became the Self Seeking Git from Liverpool.

In West Inbred Scouserland, playing games,
Acting like the big man, swaggering, most of his days.
Went on a winning streak, 10 in a row,
To the top if the league with four games to go.
When they won against City, they were feeling the joy,
Gerrard put in place his attention seeking ploy,
He huddled up with his team mates, a group of bellends.
And shouted up to the camera that "We Go Again".

Their next game was Chelsea, and as it drew near,
The papers showed us photos of his cries and his tears.
He could have given Liverpool reason to cheer,
But he thought "Nah, forget it"
"I'll just slip up here!"

Then. The. Dream fell apart when Gayle scored at 88',
And the tyre nicking scumbag learned the hard way;
Never count your chickens, that's the golden rule!
You Self Seeking Git from Liverpool.

Genius.

Hardest thing to do as a cm imo. As good as you are as a player, if your team doesn't have a grip on the game you can't do much. He had the ability to, but he never got the best out of it. His best football was off the front man, which combined all his best attributes. For me Gerrard is the quintessential English player, one of the best I have seen, but off the very best.

As I told you I consider Ronaldo an all time great, I don't think you will find anyone who doesn't. The question is where he is within the all time greats. If the greats who came before could score AND dictate games at the highest level, who would you rather have?

Got to say i felt for him, on his haunches with that i'm never going to get a PL medal look on his face. But then i sobered up.

In the tunnel before KO he looked like he'd had the longest week of his life. The momentum Liverpool built this year was impressive and almost carried them over the line but the huddle after the City win, the crying..it got too emotional from Gerrard and he lost his head.

"The last cup Gerrard got his hands on was last week in bed with his wife, about an hour after I had done the same."

..... That's the worst thing I've typed this week. But I'm on my phone and I can't be arsed deleting it.

My god this thread just gets better and better everyday.

Has to be the winner for thread of the year, I'm putting it out there early, still over half a year to go but thread of the year FOR SURE.

As amusing as the Huddle was, the slip was, and Stevie Me failing his Roy of the rovers impression vs Chelsea, doesn't the games vs city, Norwich, Chelsea and palace prove that Gerrard is not a top top player and not an amazing leader.

Football is played as much with the head as the feet but the only thing Gerrard inspired was a melt down. Against city, they were a fluky miscontrol by kompany from screwing a 2-0 lead, Norwich, they conspired to throw away the lead, Chelsea they lost all discipline and we know what happened at palace.

In his QB position, with the game played in front of him a top top player would pull strings and calm his teammates, and see that Liverpool were losing control before the goals shipped. I think Stevie plays for himself. As good a player he is, he's best pulling a team single handedly not pulling the strings like a maestro.

Edit. For some reason I missed a dozen posts saying this. Sorry folks.

I'll be honest, after Monday night I've just been waiting to hear news that the poor lad has committed suicide or something. I mean when Liverpool beat Norwich I'm sure he like 99% of people thought Liverpool had practically won the league. Must be in bits.

fecking genius  Now @Mockney needs to rap on this like he did on "Shame on a negrito"

No sympathy whatsoever for him. Self centred and self absorbed twat. Glad his slip will be a defining moment of his career.
I second this. I don't feel a single ounce of sympathy for him and the "If there's one player who deserves a PL medal it's Gerrard" brigade and f*ck right off as well. Glad his slip is what will potentially cost them the league.

His post-slip performance against Chelsea went un-criticised as well when it was a disgusting display of selfishness.

"If there's one player who deserves a PL medal it's Gerrard" brigade

It's the same as the people who think Leeds "deserve" to be in the PL just because they're Leeds. The fact is they aren't good enough to do it.

End of.

All this taking the piss out of Stevie for bottling the title is really unfair. Show some respect.

He's been waiting for this moment, for all his life, oh Lord.

I wonder if it had been Gerrard sent off instead of Henderson, whether Liverpool would have won the league now. An Allen, Henderson, Coutinho three has more legs and better tracking certainly, probably would have helped in Chelsea and palace games

City fans are definitely trying to make this Gerrard song happen but they're a bit rubbish at it so far.
