Stefan de Vrij

Is he any better than Tyler Blackett though? Do think three at the back makes defenders look better, Chiles back three for example, as a unit great, individually shite.
Who De Vrij? Blind?

I'll assume Blind. I am not sure, as i have not seen him in Ajax much. But his WC performances would strongly suggest he is. But that is not even the point. Not the main one. The main thing is right now we have talented but very young Shaw there and James as LWB, and Blackett as a cover at LCB. I also kind of think that Evans will be use as a central CB, not left one. So basically our left side of the pitch is extremely un-experienced. And any player to remedy that would be welcomed. Blind while not had any PL exp, he is a captain of Ajax team if i remember right, well anyway he does have some serious experience and what's more important he can cover LCB, LWB, DM positions. And we lack in options in all those.

We don't have a right to sign every good or promising player in the world.

If the manager doesn't think he's good enough for us then I'm glad we didn't sign him.

If the manager thinks our CB's are good enough to win the title this season - he's clearly deluded..

But he isnt it seems, as he's already stated recently that he wants defenders this window!

The amount of media outlets that have linked us to De Vrij was unreal & now it turns out we never even made any contact about signing him.

It surely has to cast doubt in us actually being after the likes of Vidal, Di Maria or Hummels does it not?

You assume wrong, I'm talking about De Vrij, Blackett looks just as good playing in a back three, but my question is does the back three make them look better than they are, again take Chile for example, they looked solid together, but individually two of them got relegated and the other got released last season, and that same system made Ron Vlaar look like Jaap Stam.

Why would you talk about De Vrij, citing my post? I mean i wrote that he is a right sided player. And that being maybe the main reason why United did not really wanted him here, as we need LCB much more.
Again i have not seen much of De Vrij apart WC, but it's like comparing Rafael and Evra. Essentially they play on different positions. I also have not seen Blackett in any real games.

The papers pick up on any little thing though and exaggerate it to the max. We've been linked with just about every member of the Dutch national team because we have a Dutch manager - Dirk feckin' Kuyt, for example.

Just look at all this Vidal nonsense. Not once have we shown any interest in him, nor he in us, yet the papers have picked up on the wishful thinking of United fans and have said his signing is imminent.

I have no idea who we're going to sign, but if we're working on it, as the manager says, then I await patiently. This Vermaelen thing seems to be taking an inordinately long time though, but who's to say it's actually happening?

In fairness though, Wenger was asked in a presser a week or 2 ago about Vermaelen & he didnt deny it, in fact he said that if he goes to us, they'll get someone else in to replace him.

As regards to Vidal, i'm totally contradicting myself here from my previous post, but i remember Mitten coming out about 2 weeks ago (in his "Vlog") & saying that United had just briefed the press & said they werent interested anymore - which contradicted what Mitten was being fed by his sources at the club - he admitted that too.

So there must have been contact about buying him at some stage. Whether we've re-ignited interest again remains to be seen though.

United saying nothing keeps us all in limbo - whether thats a good thing or not, i'm not so sure now.

Its a policy thats open to redicule & conspiracy, considering we're trying to flog shares & being linked with some of the best players in the world at the moment, not to mention the risk warning issued to potential buyers of those shares.

Coincidence?

I don't understand why we haven't bought this guy. Looked a good defender in the World Cup and comfortable on the ball. Good age, available at a good price and LVG knows him. No brainer.

Precisely. Maybe he's just not that good.

I've got the feeling Woodward has told LvG not to worry about the transfers and that he'll get whoever he wants, no matter who it is or how likely/unlikely the transfer has a chance of happening. That's why I think we weren't in for De Vrij and that we're apparently looking at other defenders, more 'suitable' defenders while being unavailable like Hummels, Benatia, etc. Woodward thinks he can bring them in but I'm afraid he's setting himself up for a big fail again if he think he's getting either of the aforementioned two.

Buying Shaw (who no one else wanted at £27m) and Herrera (triggering a release clause) was hardly rocket science yet after several summers' of incompetence by the hierarchy at United, we've been fooled ino think it's satisfactory. Er, no we've strengthened in positions we've had outgoings just as recent as this summer. What about the neglect of the midfield in the previous 5-6 summers? What about the loss of two of our central defenders, one who is still better than anything we currently have playing for us in the heart of defence.

Going into the season with our current squad, especially our current defence and midfield, won't be good enough, imo.

It was obvious the first time I ever saw him play and said as much on this thread, the guy turns like an absolute oil tanker. He's never good enough for us, hence why we are desperate for a CB but this guy has gone elsewhere.

yes, a 2nd Strootman scenario would be awful. I started to like him after the WC, really impressed me but the dutch don't rate him that much after his season for Feyenoord and we all know being at the WC can be much different to reach that level week in week out. A WC often gets something extra out of players.

LVG knows this guy well and even though he's young, cheap, fits well in the back 3 United will be using and pays a position he has said we need signings, he still passed on him. Tells it's own story.

 Come again?

If anything it'll be the other way round. You really think LVG is going to let Ed pick his transfer targets for him? He already clearly stated that he approved the deals for Shaw and Herrera so you can safely assume that any more signings will be his own choices.

Worded wrongly. What I meant was I think that LvG will probably tell Woodward who he wants and Ed will go and get that player. Or should I say try to get him. Ed's probably convinced him, like he's convinced us, that we can still get the best players in but I'm afraid he's setting himself up for failure if he thinks he can get Hummels in this season. That's not happening ever.

Was bloody brilliant today once again, great on the ball, great on the air, loads of interceptions. Has surprised me as I didnt really rate him last season at Feyenoord.

He was one of the better ones in the league for Feyenoord, but he wasn't great yet. After a shaky start at Lazio he's now in really good form. He really stepped it up a notch this season. I didn't see it coming this soon either to be fair!

Is he any good for Nazio?

After a shaky start he's really stepped up. Improved alot this season and really became alot more confident and calm (one of his old weak points).

Don't think he's good enough for us yet, but he's been great this season. Could become good, but let him at least stay at Lazio for another year.

Yeah maybe we should aim higher, buy a proven CB and buy him in a year or 2 if he proves to be good.

I don't think that's true. We could have get him last summer, but LvG decided not to sign him. It seems he wants someone better, so would be odd to come back for him after one year in Italy and a much bigger fee now.

We've had a €25m bid turned down for him according to Corriere Dello Sport.

Wasnt he available for a third of that last summer and LVG, who knew him well, didnt go in for him?

Pretty idiotic if true.. but then again, we might not be interested at all.

LVG coming in late after the WC and seeing and assessing his defensive personnel was probably the reason we didn't go for him.

Cillessen, De Vrij, Pèdroe in. Ddg, di Maria out. Job done.
