Stefan de Vrij

Ogden reckons that De Vrij is on Van Gaal's radar but Mike Keegan thinks he's more likely to go to Italy.

He's already back at Feyenoord, returned from holiday. Lazio move has stalled. Obviously he is on LVG's radar and he wouldn't really cost much, but I'm still not sure whether this will happen or not.

Italy it's Lazio I think, they bid around £5 million, it's not like we couldn't blow that out of the water if we really want him, maybe Van Gaal doesn't really rate him & he is a last resort sort of signing, would seem to be more a signing of convenience more than anything.

Well yeah even though Van Gaal said he wants to wait to see his squad...we'd have to act now if we want him if other clubs are interested

Sure if we think we are going to want him LvG can just have a word in his ear, and ask him to wait, much as we are a sinking ship in the transfer market we haven't quite reached the days when Lazio, or Southampton compete with us just yet.

This radar shit from Ogden is doing my head in. So he can see him and is thinking about making an approach is that what he means..?
The guy just spent four weeks with him and probably knows him inside out.
If LVG wants him surely Ed buys him, what would possibly hold it up?
It would not take more than a day in training to work out Smalling is allergic to the ball. Jones is always one challenge away from a serious injury and Evans is just pretty decent.

The fee would be relatively cheap and surely he would not turn us down for fecking Lazio.

Initially I was hoping that we would sign two centre-backs but I'm starting to think we should just promote Michael Keane and sign one defender for cover.

De Vrij would be an alright signing but I can't see him being our first choice. I think we'll get Vermaelen eventually, for better or worse.

I think he'll be this summer's Strootman. He'll go abroad and tear shit up and then in a season or two, we'll be back in for him and we'd be willing to pay more than double the price.

our chance to sign Hummels seems slowly fade away, with me being a transfer muppet, I do hope that we are going to sign this feyenoord lil fecker

If we are to continue with Evans at LCB, I'd like to see de Vrij at RCB with Smalling central. Smalling is the strongest aerially and is very quick so he's able to push up a little more in this position, and both he and Jones aren't good enough in awkward positions to manoeuvre with the ball like de Vrij can.

Haven't Dortmund got enough already? They can have him and we will have Hummels, thank you very much.

Hmm guess we weren't interested after all, don't know why his a bargain. We'll probably end up with Vermaelen now :(

Surprised we are not in for him, could be because we have someone else in mind. He was good at the world cup, haven't seen much of him otherwise. If LVG doesn't rate him then there's a very good reason I suppose.

Maybe LvG does not thnk he is any better or has more potential than Jones, Smalling or Evans. I think LvG wants an experienced an experienced left sided defender.
I think he may have gone for Moreno of Mexico ( he manged him at AZ) but he got injured fairly early in the World Cup.

8.5m is a steal

can't believe no other club would throw in 10m, just for the lulz
I'm surprised that Koeman did not go for him as a replacement for Lovren. Koeman managed him at Feyenoord

I wonder if nobody told LvG about the injury record of our CB's. We need at least 2 more or we face CM's in defence once more. I really don't get why are not acting on that front. De Vrij would have a been a cheap addition with potential. This could easily be a repeat of the Strootman story

He'll be going for at least twice that, maybe triple, in a few years time.

We can't go through the season with just 3 injury prone CB's we need numbers for the back and I am not sure about the kids.

seems like LvG is inswervingly in terms of wanting a left footed CB. That is why he seems to prefer Vermaelen (what I do not understand) and the reason why he is testing Blackett intensively

Interesting one. Thought we might take a gamble at that price but then again nobody is in a better position than van Gaal to judge if De Vrij was what we need, having seen him every day at the World Cup.

We clearly need an experienced CB, not a 22 year old. I don't know why people are getting annoyed about this.
That's fine, but get one that isn't injured all the time. We have the possibility of having all four injured at the same time. Also I thought he liked developing players not buying old crocks.

Maybe LVG are more sure about them than you?Not a mockery, just my general speculation of what's happening.LVG might have been impressed by the kids more than some here.Badstuber is hardly perfect in his last LVG season.

Another point is our medical staffs already informed LVG that they expect Smalling,Jones and Evans to have a "clean" season in terms of injury so that might have affected things.

I would rather pay that, than more for a player who couldn't get in the Arsenal side and is always injured. We will end up playing well over the odds. There must be better gettable options out there.

We need both, an experienced defender and numbers.

We have to trust Louis to get this right. If Blackett has his breakthrough season under him I am even more happy to see an academy player but to me he looked vulnerable so far.

I think the idea is that since most teams now play 1 up front and 2 wide players (Whether it's 4-3-3, 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1), the wider CB's need to be very comfortable passing and carrying the ball. Their wide attacker will often cover our wing back, so whatever side the 9 isn't on will mean the CB there is making the breakout pass.

Evans seems to have the passing ability, Jones the ball carrying and Keane a bit of both. Smalling, not so much (he will play central more, I would guess). But they're all right-footed, so it makes sense to bring in a left-footer who can carry the ball to get forward or is capable of hitting good, hard low passes to the strikers and 2 Spaniards behind them.

He played well in the WC but was stripped of the captaincy last season at Feyenord, he also plays as a RCB, the side of the defense I think Smalling and Jones will be competing for, and the age range he is in also may hint that LvG sees M. Keane and Blackett as prospective squad members this season.

In which case it seems odd we didn't go for Bruno Martins Indi as he went for less than De Vrij (rightly too, not as good) while we're seemingly being held to ransom for Vermaelen. I mean if being left footed is all that matters.

Left footed and with some brains. Martins indi is the most brainless fottballer I have ever seen
