Big big stretch IMO. Was surprised to see him in the block list initially. He has top credentials, but my impression of him is that he had a relatively short frame for a stopper, wasn't very agile and as an individual I wouldn't place him that much ahead of Giarneri or Ferri for example. Definitely below Bratseth and Adams.

Adams is a good one, although his England career wasn't that great.

I have heard it on several occasions (also as a stick to beat Cantona with) and English clubs have been much less prominent in the European Cup compared to Italian / German / Spanish clubs. It was clearly the 4th best league in Europe at that time and English clubs had just one appearance in the final of the EC/CL in that decade, which was United in 99.

Bratseth was both tbh. A bit like Figueroa. His individual credentials top Rosato in every sense IMO. He was incredibly fast for 193cm in height and was tough, strong and could read the game better. Rosato was a man marker and primarily stopper but put him against Vieri type who could bully him or Romario/Owen type with excellent technique and low center of gravity and he'll struggle.
The English league was hit by Heysel and they did serve a 5-6 years ban from playing in Europe. In the mid/late 90's still you had Arsenal, Chelsea, United playing in CWC and Uefa cup finals and also United making it into the latter stages of CL.
England had a good outing in the 96 EURO and generally had some quality players, especially United and Arsenal. Serie A was by far ahead of the pack and was brimmed with quality, but I wouldn't say the gap between each of Germany/Spain/England was that big at the time.

Rosato's top-level credentials are first rate - best central defender in arguably the best World Cup of all time - when he shut out an on-fire Gerd Muller for 95 minutes in the semi until he went off injured. And then Muller quickly grabbed a double once he'd left the park. Also part of the miserly defence that won Euro '68. For what it's worth @Don Alfredo Rosato was third on my 30-man list of non-starred stoppers and you could make a case for a small handful of CBs as being the best of that pool. But as ever it was about the fit and I thought he would complement Schulz nicely.

Rosato wasn't even pinned for starter at that WC. He had a great one, but similar case can be made about someone like Gamarra.Italy played in a back three that game as well and he had plenty of help to call it one man job.
At the 68' EURO he didn't play. Not sure if he had any minutes but probably a game or so in the qualies. Guarneri and Burgnich were the preferred options in the stopper role.
He has excellent credentials as I've mentioned but individually hasn't struck me at being much better than the other Italian stoppers like Ferri, Collovati and Guarneri, who are in the lower tier to Gentile, Bergomi and the likes.
