Film Star Wars: Episode VIII

Re the comedy. Am I the only one who found the “I can hear you, can you hear me?” stuff genuinely funny? I’d go as far as saying it was one of the funniest bits of any Star Wars movie.

That was genuinely funny for sure, as was the look Kylo Ren gave Hux when he repeated his order near the end.

Some of the humour missed, but some of it was bang on.

The Chewie eating Porgs scene and the scene where Rey chopped down the rock and it landed near those nun creatures got the biggest laughs in my cinema. The opening Hux-Poe stuff got audible groans. Like, loud groans that distracted me.

I quite liked them killing off Snoke. Even if he'd been given backstory it was always going to amount to the same character - ie an Emperor-esque bad guy who's evil for the sake of being evil. His death actually surprised me and the scene itself was very good.

Couldn't agree more - it gives a whole new dimension to Kylo's character and stopped the third film from simply being The Return of Return of the Jedi...

Add me to the list of nodding heads. Delighted they killed off Snoke, I want Kylo to be the main man and not just have a re-run of episodes 4-6.

Anakin was unusually gifted in the Force, potentially the strongest ever, and Luke had as much potential as him. However, both of them needed some training in order to be able to do things that Rey is doing effortlessly. Luke had almost 5 years of Force exposure when he was doing awesome things in Return of the Jedi, while Rey has a week or so of Force exposure.

Rey being stronger than them makes the prophecy of the chosen one a bit of a joke. In fact, with her not being a Skywalker, she shouldn't be as strong as Anakin/Luke.
The whole force power chart/chosen one/midichlorian stuff is exactly what this series was trying to get away from. "Skywalker blood" is currently 50/50 for turning you into a mass-murderer.

Kind of agree about Snoke. It makes the final movie totally unpredictable, while with Snoke there, most likely would have resulted with Ren's redemption.

Wouldn't be awesome if the movie ends with Ren and Rey actually deciding to take over the galaxy. A bit like what Anakin wanted to do with Padme.

Forget about prequels, Luke needed training in order to become Jedi. Why Rey doesn't has not been explained, and in order to make things consistent (yep, some people care about consistency in a series of movies), it should have been explained.

Let the past die ;)

The prank call stuff at the beginning got some light chuckles in my cinema. Went on too long though. The lines that felt the most ridiculous was the back and forth between Finn & the big shiny Stormtrooper lady. She said something pithy, and he responded with “let’s do this Chrome dome!”... it sounded like the pre-flight banter in a 90s Tekken game.

Not liking a film liking a film now makes you a nerd and the worst on the internet. The self righteous sanctimony has plumbed new depths.

I was kinda more referring to things like this...

Abrams must have been gutted when he read the first draft and realized that he won't be able to draw the Return of the Jedi parallel, he'll probably throw in some Ewoks instead as a consolation.

That's interesting. Different crowds. In my cinema the Hux-Poe stuff got proper belly laughs. The other two scenes just got a few titters.

Luke dusting off his shoulder had most of the audience roaring but I thought it was pretty jarring.

I’m not sure how anyone could get that without some kind of telepathy skills. I’m not offended. Just commenting on what appear to be bullshit generalisations and sweeping statements.

For me episode 3 was better than this
I don't think that it is even close to be fair, Revenge was so much better. But then, I think that Revenge was better than Return too.

I would also put Rogue One comfortably ahead of this, and I think that Rogue is the best Disney Star Wars movie.

I think that this movie did the right thing by exploring new ideas, but found it totally stupid the way it shit over the other Star Wars movies. Combined with the weak humor, and the casino planet, it just makes for me a good movie, but nothing more than that. A 7/10, at most.

That's not what you used to think.

I know. I've rewatched them since...and came to the conclusion that Empire was overrated and Jedi criminally underrated. It's far more fun and looks far better than the first two. That said opinions shouldn't be set in stone..so......

Revenge of the Sith being about as bad as the first two prequels is the hill I choose to die on.

Tbf he has to say that. Anything other than 100% confidence in their ratings undermines their whole business model.
Yes, it's impossible to prove Russian, 4chan hacker, Alt Right faggots did it or not but what hilarious s that Media tried to spin it like people couldn't legitimately hate Star Wars.

I only read one article on this alleged hack. It was in Huffpost and they interviewed a bunch of people who clearly hated the film. I mean it’s obvious a load of people don’t like it. Nobody is pretending otherwise. It’s the lengths that some of those people might go to discredit a movie they don’t like that’s the story here. Ghostbusters all over again.

Yeah someone I know burned a fecking Star Wars shirt and put it on Facebook. People who are genuinely offended by this movie perplex me.

Any room in that fox-hole with you?
Imagine having an open goal from a yard out like the Vader reveal scene, then turning it into one of the biggest jokes in the series  I didn't like the Leia in space scene at all in this, but at least it wasn't the moment the entire trilogy was building up to.

Well, it was certainly dumb popcorn entertainment. I enjoyed it. Atleast it wasn't a complete rip off like Episode 7.

Adum sums up my opinion perfectly in the video below. Says it like it is:

Indeed. Someone higher up the thread was arguing that VII is a better film. I mean, it’s not a bad film but blowing up the Death Star all over again is about as derivative as a Star Wars movie can get.

Right, because this movie doesn't do things that have been done before. Like a last defence for an escape (Hoth/Crait), the apprentice bringing his master the protagonist to turn her/him to the dark side (both times the apprentice kills his master), infiltrating enemy forces (first Death Star, Endor and here), grumpy old master training the protagonist. For what it's worth I thought there was no need for another Death Star in the TFA, they could have easily done something else there, which the rebels then try to destroy. Like a weapons laboratory, not some bigger superweapon that can destroy planets the audience doesn't give a toss about.

Yes, no denying they borrowed heavily, but it wasn't almost a scene by scene copy like Episode 7, was it? I am assuming Kylo Ren will remain evil till the end rather than do a U turn like Vader.

Of course, it is pretty silly the way Snoke died, I mean, he had no backstory and despite being set up to be all-powerful, he couldn't anticipate the lightsaber by his side was moving. But it was silly fun, not silly boring like the last movie.

If you don't analyze the movie too much, tolerate the obvious derivative scenes from previous movies, and just go with a low expectation, it is actually a pretty fun watch.

People are still at it with Snoke theories  I saw another guy insisting that Snoke was actually a hologram and still lives!

It’s full of standard sci fi/fantasy movie tropes. That’s true. Like you say, though, blowing up the exact same enemy weapon all over again was just taking the piss. FWIW, I still enjoyed the film. I just think this one is better. Mainly because of the visual style. The whole white/red salt plain battle was one of the best scenes in every star wars movie ever. And the light speed collision looked fantastic too. The Force Awakens lacked “oh shit” moments like those IMO.

I certainly hope so. I didn't really have that much of problem with Snoke dying the way he did, because it was in line with Sith Lords being blinded by their arrogance. Lastly I agree, if you don't think all that much about it or look for the positives, there are plenty to be found.

Visually, I have no problem with all 3 of the movies, I think they are all beautiful in terms of cinematography. Solo is probably going to continue that trend considering it is being shot by Bradford Young, who did Arrival. There are definitely scenes I enjoy from a visual standpoint in TFA, which was something I was concerned about with Abrams at the helm, but Rey sliding down that dune or her fight with Ren in the forest looked great. Saying that TLJ is the more beautiful movie isn't a controversial statemant though.

The X-Wings ripping across the big lake was my favourite looking set-piece in TFA.

I'm with Kevin Smith on the ending, they really should have had Luke actually there and feck shit up, just given the character that big finale. Like Vader in Rogue One just cemented his status even more.

Even the most angriest man-child nerd would have surely had this down as the greatest film ever on that one scene alone. I mean it was a pleasant send off, but what was the actual point? Kids and nerds alike would have loved it too. So easy to write, changes nothing whatsoever about the story and the next film, yet would have just made everyone happy.

Other than that, after a second viewing and on reflection, my thoughts haven't changed much. Decent enough, a few miss-steps imo, a bit too long, but still way better than any of those shite prequels. Oh and it really is amazingly good looking.
