Television Star Trek

I really enjoyed the first series. I have a week off and was looking forward to binging the second, but they're only doing one episode at a time :(
I think they did this last season too. I'll wait a few weeks and binge a few then watch it weekly or wait again.

Ah right. I only discovered it when they suggested I like it because I liked something else.

I'll probably wait for the season to finish and watch it all at once then. Easier to follow the storylines.

Watched the first episode of season 2 and it was... bad. The same incoherent mess as season 1 and if it continues like this we will soon know how many plot holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall. Not sure I will continue, though.

Loving the 2nd episode. Gone back to the old ways a bit and loving Pike as Captain. I'm liking the angel plot thing as well as you can tell there's a theme for the next 7 episodes that you can look forward to.

Bring on next Friday!

Yeah, the second episode was classic Star Trek. Interesting to see whether they'll be doing a lot of these stand alone episodes within the big, developing story.

I am going to wait for them all and then watch them together. I think I made a mistake by watching all 3 seasons of Dark Matter this month. It is so much better and more fun than season 1 of this was. I hope this gets better and is not as 'political' as the first series.

Much better indeed. The storyline is nothing new and I was reminded of the DS9 episode "Paradise" and some ENT episode I can't remember at the moment. It was by no means perfect and them constantly citing the Prime Directive and then completely abandoning it as soon as they set foot on the planet was hilarious. Other Discovery problems remain, such as the bad dialogues, the fact that I don't really care for any of people on the show (Pike instantly being the best and most likeable character says a lot), the terrible Tilly character (why does she get so much screen time?). And I guess scientists could have a field day with that episode. But I cannot deny that I enjoyed watching it. That at least felt like Star Trek. 7/10 (by far the best Discovery episode for me so far).

Felt like the last episode was a bit meh, get why proper Star Trek fans would love it for the nostalgia but having never been a fan of Star Trek I enjoyed this show due to how different it was compared to the old land on planet, hijinx ensues run of the mill episodes.

I didn't love 203. I was never a fan of the proper Klingons but at least they knew how to have a good time! Discoverys have to be the most anhedonic species yet. And the constant subtitles...

Then there's the new captain - a character so bland and uninteresting that he makes you almost forget how bad an actor the lead is. And Tilly, who once provided a refreshing slice of humanity to an otherwise sterile and unrelatable cast but is now rapidly becoming an irritant.

Back to utter rubbish again this week. Might seriously stop watching now. Nor sure I can take another minute of Tilly.

So Discovery is a Voyager knockoff?
...
I'm planning to subscribe for a month (May, when I'm less busy) and watch them all together. Your first review raised my hopes but overall it doesn't look like I'm missing out on much.

Give it a try. I know people who really like it.

Last week (without going to spoiler) was a typical ST away-mission episode that works in every show. It was well written (generally) and very well directed. This week we're back to the bigger arc which I don't think is working at all.

And one more thing...

Section 31. Brilliant in Deep Space Nine, "Inquisition" and particularly "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" are two of my favourite episodes. The Sloan character was a stroke of genius and Bashir was the perfect antagonist. It felt forced when they revisited it in Enterprise and the way they have introduced Section 31 in Discovery now makes me fear the worst.

Actually I'm hoping for Garak to appear and kill them all and put them out of their misery (and mine!)

According to the subtitles somebody spoke Welsh on the latest episode. Can't help but find it a bit sad that I needed subtitles to understand the language of my country

so the klingons are speaking welsh ?
I always assumed that Welsh was used for the language of aliens or other races in SciFi/Fantasy shows/movies.

Aren't the Elves in Lord of the Rings Welsh?

If that scene between Michael and Saru was supposed to make me emotional and care about any of them, it failed. Boy that dragged on. The acting is so terrible on that show.

You're full of a lot of hatred, aren't you?

I'm a Star Trek fan and was really looking forward to Discovery but it's just so disappointing. The contrived plots, ridiculous dialogues, abysmal acting and the general feeling I'm watching a soap opera in space at times.

I might just rewatch DS9 again. Take a simple scene like this one here. Just two people chatting at the bar but the level of depth these two incredible actors get in there is extraordinary. This has got you glued to the screen whereas I find myself reaching for my phone whenever I watch Discovery.

This, Tilly and Burnham are 2 very irritating characters. I don't mind the Burnham story, just find the actress a little difficult. Most Star Treks have worked with more of an ensemble cast(the mighty DS9 the best example) but with so much focus on Burnham I am not sure she is a strong enough actress to carry that weight.

Found it amusing that they finally got around to naming the rest of the bridge crew in the first episode, perhaps a realization of their narrow focus.

Love DS9 but to be fair the first 2 seasons are rough. However that cast was brilliant. Sisko, Kira, O'Brien, Dax:drool:, Garak, Odo, Gul Dukat, Weyoun, Bashir, Morn, Jake, Nog, Worf, Quark.

Still not as good as Babylon 5 though, rubbish CGI and all.

Officially done with it now and won't watch the next episode. Found this great review on IMDB for the latest episode which captures my feelings about the show to a tee so I'm just going to paste it here.

I understand that some people are enjoying this show and I respect that. All I can say is that after 29 episodes I'm officially done. I honestly just don't enjoy it. I don't understand it, I don't care about or like most characters and I've just given up. I say this with a heavy heart as I wanted to like Discovery but there just comes a point where you give up. I say this as a lifelong fan of Star Trek too!

This episode just left me stone cold. I found myself actually hoping that characters would die so we wouldn't have to watch them. The "science"is absurd. They are hoping if they talk enough nonsense quickly enough we will just overlook the fact that it's so utterly contrived.

If this is what is popular nowadays I wish the creators and fans best of luck. I'm out.

The section 31 stuff is just ridiculous. Did the writers even watch the relevant DS9 episodes?

Done with it myself. Garbage show, crap characters, poor writing with an obnoxiously overt fixation on social commentary.

The overall feeling I get from people I speak to about this is Star Trek fans hate it, non Star Trek fans think it’s alright.

I'm enjoying it, it's got a bit over-emotional in the last two episodes, but yeah, still good viewing.

Plus Captain Robin Van Persie is great.

There is so little quality Sci-Fi out there. A lot of pulp, but in terms of something with a bit of ambition and originality not so much. Bad Star Trek should be better than no Star Trek.

The Expanse might be the only one and even it was nearly cancelled. Love the genre, think it allows for tremendous scope in storytelling and had been hoping that the success of Game of Thrones might lead to a strong period for genre TV. Probably costs too much to commit to something high quality.

Try Altered Carbon.

This particular scene must be after a couple of seasons at least! by which time most of the characters had established themselves.

That is fair. I would be concerned at the lack of chemistry the cast seem to have with each other, put much of that down to the poor dialogue. Even in early DS9 you could see the potential in some of the character interactions.

High water mark for casting chemistry is probably Firefly. By the second episode, aided by witty and high quality writing they already seemed comfortable in their roles in a manner that most shows never reach.

I quite liked the chemistry between bashir and o'brien and between odo and quark and stand alone appearances of garek. I rate DS9 and Babylon 5 as the pinnacle of sci-fi.

Discovery is a fantastic show. I used to liked the old Star Trek, but this is better. Proper, unsanitised, cinematic sci-fi.

Until GoT begins to air in April, ST : D is the best show currently broadcasting a run.

Enjoy it while you can. I hear this may be the last year.
