Television Star Trek

Enjoy it while you can. I hear this may be the last year.
You've hoping for that for ages.
Sounds like this will be Discovery's final season. Beyond its general rubbishness and plagiarism, it apparently didn't make money the first year and has been plagued by producers getting sacked for abusing the writers, going overbudget in the initial season two episodes, and problems negotiating further global licensing through Netflix.

Hopefully they move on and put their effort into the new Picard series.

I don't mind Discovery at all.

Pike definitely gets on like a captain. Almost a cross between Picard and Kirk.
Saru too but his patter has been a bit annoying recently.

I also like that tinpot engineer they found cutting about an asteroid with a toolbox.

The main problem with the show is that the central character is inherently unlikeable and not very well constructed.

Everyone elese is fine, bar Tilly, who also fecking sucks.

Michelle Yeoh is great though, show should just be about her rampaging about the universe like a badass.

I think Discovery is great though. But I apparently have an odd taste in Trek because I also enjoyed Enterprise and Voyager, while I think DS9 is pish.

Can I ask why?

The first 2 seasons were, not good, I could accept, and Worf joining up could be seen as a cynical ploy, but it had so many fun characters. Watched Enterprise on Netflix last year, had heard it was rubbish but was pleasantly surprised, even if their shameful exploitation of the T'Pol character made Worf move look subtle.

Not that I am complaining, Jolene Blalock made for a distracting Vulcan.

Started watching The Orville recently after giving up on Discovery and really like it. The sets feel a little low-budget at times but even after a handful of episodes I already like every single character more than any other character on Discovery. The light-hearted dialogues and the fact that the show doesn't take itself too seriously make for a welcome change after all that pretentious drivel. More importantly the stories actually got me hooked.

The got away with some lame episodes in seasons 1 and 2 in a way that wouldn't be possible anymore in today's TV landscape. But even so the potential was always there and they had the time to find their feet with all these great characters/actors at their disposal. Going through the list of episodes, I have to say though that there are a still a number of episodes that I love and probably even wouldn't skip a single one (ok, maybe Move Along Home and Rivals) due to the characters.

Ten episodes from season 1 and 2:

Past Prologue
Babel
Dramatis Personae
Duet
The Homecoming / The Circle / The Siege
Necessary Evil
Armageddon Game
Whispers
Blood Oath
The Maquis

Discovery is a fantastic show. I used to liked the old Star Trek, but this is better. Proper, unsanitised, cinematic sci-fi.

Until GoT begins to air in April, ST : D is the best show currently broadcasting a run.
Does this include TNG or are we talking OLD Star Trek?

for me Discovery is right up there with Picard and TNG for best Trek.
Suru is brillant.

Have you seen the other series ?

For me my order of preference is:
DS9
Enterprise (3rd-4th season)
Voyager/TNG
Discovery
TOS

I grew up on TNG..however it has a lot of crappy episodes also.

For me I'd order it:

  • DS9
  • Voyager
  • Discovery
  • The Next Generation

  • Enterprise

If Discovery gets some more space battles then it might jump Voyager.

Every single one , more than once.

For me

TNG (despite some dreadful eps)
Voyager/Discovery
DS9
Enterprise
TOS, I grew up watching this and still do watch it, but some are just unwatchable.

Just on historic treks, Voyager probably the worst for me, just very bland, has its moments but just a little lacking in the spark and charm that the others could have. TOS is a strange watch these days, have been revisiting it on Netflix and some of the earliest episodes have a level of casual misogyny that is rather startling.

yeah , maybe you are right.

Heh, I meant Picard, the tv show, is only in pre-production. ;)

My silly preference of Star Trek live action stuff:

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek VIII: First Contact
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Star Trek: Enterprise
Star Trek IX: Insurrection
Star Trek: Voyager
Star Trek: Beyond
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Star Trek X: Nemesis
Star Trek Discovery
Star Trek Into Darkness

Last four are utter dreck.

Maybe I'm just too sentimental about The Voyage Home, and I still haven't seen the original series. Still don't have some urge to do so. Probably should.

From the ones I've seen:

Good:
DS9
TNG
The Motion Picture
Wrath of Khan

Mostly good:
Voyager
Star Trek TOS

Mostly bad:
First Contact (it was ok but it introduced that stupid borg queen)
Star Trek 2009/Beyond
Star Trek Discovery (1st season)
Into Darkness

For the Original Series, there is absolutely no order to the episodes at all. Start with some of the best ones (probably Balance of Terror or City on the Edge of Forever) and see if you like them. It's very dated (you can tell it was written 60 years ago), and there are a number of shit and silly episodes, but the best ones are worth it.

AH yes forgot about that.

I take it you didn't the like ds9 because it was realistic and strayed away from the idealistic society that other trek shows portrayed ?

I dont know whether you've seen babylon 5 ? that according to me is the best scifi till date (graphics/cgi are shit) and is a bit dark and realistic. I think it all depends what you like in show.

I did like DS9 , just not has much as the others. I found Sisko a bit OTT , Loved Odo and Quark and his brother Rom, some very good eps, but some bad ones, also like Gull Ducat , knew what he wanted.
There is plenty I did like about DS9.
B5 I have watched more than Star Trek , fantastic series, in some ways better than Star Trek and for me the best ending of any Sci-Fi series ever.

Google Knows (but it's not too smart)

Meanwhile, Thursday's Discovery episode was heavily related to a TOS classic and nobody's talking about it.

Its all about the quality of the writers and the casting imo. The team who did TNG also contributed to Voyager and Enterprise which accounts for the quality of those shows in contrast to the hot mess of that was Discovery season 1 (I haven't seen anything beyond that point but heard they sacked the writers for being complete crap).

The old school-ism wasn't the best thing they've ever done. The likes of TNG, TOS, DS9 and VOY are not as good as Discovery, so it felt like a step backwards. But it was pretty good overall.

Season 2 is a huge improvement. Worth trying again.
