Television Star Trek

I really enjoyed the first 3 or 4 episodes, quite dark and dramatic. But I think by the time it got to the time loop one it just felt like they'd already given up and started badly rehashing all the old material. I'm still watching because I love Star Trek but I really thought this one was going to be a bit different instead of more of the same. I mean why the hell is Dwight from the Office their most fearsome enemy so far?

I love it to be fair, but then I'm not a proper trekkie. I just love si-fi stuff and don't think too much about that this one is based earlier than past trek series, hence the whole argument we know this drive system doesn' work and what spok will achieve is irrelevant to me. Just love si-fi stuff.

You're probably the sort of viewer they are angling for. Someone who isn't a Star Trek purist but does love a good sci-fi series. Within those parameters this series is pretty palatable. But for anyone who is a life long Star Trekker who has been watching episodes for many decades, this new show vacillates from horrendous to occasionally watchable.

I am one of those, even though I've seen most of Trek minus the original.

As a scifi it is quite good actually, not quite on the level of "The Expanse", but still better than 90% of the newish scifi out there.

Fair play but you have to admit there are a number of old star trek episodes where they go to a new planet to find problems that are raved about..it seems discovery can't so anything right given how big ST has become over the years.

There are indeed quite a few older series episodes that were crap but the general writing, believability of characters, production design (no ridiculous reliance on CGI) etc were far more balanced. Just looked a the video game looking sets on this new one. It all looks like they are attempting to cover up shit writing with excessive effects.

They've all had shit writing. It's all obvious as shit, nerds like star trek due to it being repeatable, it's like OCD or something.

I enjoy the old ones, not overly, but I feel discovery is a bit more of something for the average viewer. It's still full of shite like. It's like if they want a story to go somewhere which is basically impossible to get to they just like "oh aliens found this which lets them turn into tampons and take DNA from the women and clone them".

Old star trek is like old games.... Nostalgia.

Edit: sorry @Raoul , just seen the other post saying this is basically for the casual viewer. Guess I agree with you.

Its really not though. As someone who rewatches TNG whenever i can it holds up. Even watching Enterprise back again i realise how good it was, first time round i was "meh" but if anything its better on second viewing. Comparing STD to any of the previous ones isnt a case of "things were better back in my day", it simply doesnt hold a candle to previous shows.

I watched 2 or 3 episodes of Next Gen but other than that this is my first Star Trek TV experience since the original series. Not bad so far (4 episodes in).

As a scifi series it is very good, as a Star Trek series it is not as good, but it is what it needs to be.

Thing is you'd never get away with producing a Star Trek series like the old ones today, there wouldn't be enough action and darkness for modern viewers. The idealistic and campy storytelling of old Trek just wouldn't catch enough of an audience today.

@Raoul So many filthy casuals here makes me sick :)

Funny you say that but i actually think TNG in the modern era would do well. I'm not a fan of the Orville but given its following i do think there are a number of people who want a light hearted sci-fi show with a moral centre. The Orville misses the mark but something as well written as TNG could work

I think TOS quality is very variable but the writing on a good chunk of TNG and DS9 would easily hold up.

If you stop right now it's a great series.

The Orville is a complete send up of the old trek tho. It takes the piss out of it at pretty much every opportunity I find. I’m not sure i’d really say they are comparable in their execution or feel. The Orville is all cheap laughs whilst taking the piss out of modern society and the trek.

It's not, really.

There are jokes, but it's also surprisinly serious and very trek like for lengthy period of times.

More of a love letter to Trek, than taking a piss out of it. MacFarlane is a huge fan.

My point is the viewing figures show that a light hearted fun show pulls an audience. So i dont buy the "if it aint dark and brooding it cant work in modern film making"

After a decent episode last week they've gone back to being underwhelming. The acting and writing is just terrible.

I'm half way in right now... I think i hate this show :(

EDIT: That ending... Please mean they jumped into the future like after Voyager. Please...

I sort of assumed it was one of those theoretical alternate dimensions they mentioned earlier in the episode.

He's probably that white Klingon that appeared in first 3-4 episodes.

What a twist. :nervous:
Actually I'm pretty sure that this will be the case and it would really piss me off if they go down that road.

The PTSD scene was pretty poorly constructed. When the guy was originally imprisoned by the Klingons we didn't really see an appropriate setup as to why he may freak out from seeing the female Klingon in this week's episode.

how did you guys got to that conclusion?

when and where was the last time we saw that first white klongon?
Well
the woman sent him away saying he would have to give up everything. Later on they made an effort of Lorca mentioning that he ran a proper background check - that's like holding up a huge sign saying "that guy's fishy!". The torture scenes we saw in the last episode - might be showing how they surgically altered his body. Also she was in love with him - would explain the sex. And in the last episode she told Tyler while she was in prison something along the lines of she would never again let any harm come to him. Plus he's in love with Michael so it's a massively emotional love triangle! Or something like that.

I think when it happens, I'm out.

Really? In that previous episode he said that she sexually used him and tortured him... Think just saying that is enough

I don't think it is nearly enough to make us care. I've watched all nine episodes and they never went into any detail about her sexually (or otherwise) abusing him. The writing on this show is just one steaming pile of neverending dogshit.
