Solskjaer's legacy and his future

They were just "backing the manager" tbf. It's what people have been asking them to do for years. They really went right to the cliff edge with this one.
Not sure I agree with that. Even those of us who stuck with Ole the longest had gone by the City game. It was frankly cruel to drag him through yesterday as well, he was broken.

Yeah but the previous managers won trophies by sacrificing the league completely. Ole got us to semis and finals by trying to win every match, which ended up being his downfall, as we were knackered in those semis and finals.

Anyway there are plenty of threads around that are dedicated to denigrating Ole, why do you need to be in here arguing with those of us who think he did alright up until this season?
Put Moyes instead of Ole in the last 2 years with the same results, same spending prowess and answer me honestly would you consider him an utter failure?

Fantastic post indeed. I agree with every single word of yours. Especially the part he's failed his dream. It must hurt a lot.

I still remember how it was by the end of Jose. Like all hope was lost, lot of talks we'd be shit forever regardless of who'd be next. Now at least we all agree that a good manager would make us tick again. There's still hope.

I'll always appreciate and thank him for what he's done here. Many bad moments but also lot of good moments the last two and a half years. He's always one of our own.

The last sentence pretty much encapsulate your thoughts

His achievements aren't tangible or memorable in comparison to his failures, in the end its the failures that'll be remembered.

He got one significant semi and one final? And a couple league cup semis. We had a simple run in the FA cup in 19/20 and got knocked out by Chelsea - funnily the first good team we faced. Our EL run was even easier and we lost to a shitty Villareal with a significantly better team. We need to stop rewriting history. Our football was non-existent and we relied on luck to win a lot of our games. It's no surprise that once that luck ran out literally every team could beat us with ease. This was a nightmare and its come to an end.

United never been so low under Lvg and Mourinho

He has been the worst, not only in post SAF era, but in whole United history at least from 1950-today

Glad someone made this thread. Ole came in, steadied the ship, showed nothing but grace and love for our club and in the end, held on a little too long to his dream job.

He's still a legend in every sense for me, and he should always get an amazing welcome at OT.

Already being re-written as something that only turned sour in last two months. What bollocks

Thanks Ole for being Manchester United's best 4th striker ever. Your goal against Bayern sealed the treble. Well done.

Was never a good enough manager but did well to hang in there for as long as he did given that fact, so credit where it's due. He overperformed his innate ability for a while.

Plus he wasn't Mourinho. Plus I loved him as a player.

Hopefully the new manager will be successful with most of this squad, at which point people might look back on Ole's time more favourably.

Thanks Ole for leaving a semi decent squad but you werent able to do anything with it. Bruno was a good signing. All the rest are debatable.

I was Ole out but the way fans have spoken about him is an embarrassment.

I could understand when it was in the frustration of not knowing when it was going to end but he is gone now, it's done. He has been the embodiment of a model servant to this club, he is fully aware of the opportunity he had been given being brought in from a relatively small league by Sir Alex and he never showed any signs of losing that gratitude.

He took the job with no notice and tried his absolute best. If he is not good enough despite his full effort then keeping him in the job is the fault of the board, not him. Some might say he should have resigned, he finished second last year which is not the achievement it has been highlighted as but I can see why a man with self-belief would think they could progress from 2nd to 1st. Once it got really bad this season he probably hoped he could turn it around, self-belief (maybe to the point of delusion) is his biggest sin?

These same people insulting him would be saying "Ole made a mess of things then just quit and left others to clean it up" if he had resigned. He tried his best, it wasn't good enough. Hope he goes home and spends time with his family, this looks to have aged him about 10 years.

Didn't think this thread would go down well with the plastic Diddums fan club.

Ole will forever be a club legend no matter what. His name will still be sang in 20 years time on the stretty even if it's just for his playing days.

Why do people keep pointing this out? We are 12 points off the top after just 12 games having spent 400mn under him, the squad is very imbalanced, his big money signings like maguire and awb are going to need a lot of coaching from the next manager to be of use. We are going to most likely lose pogba and cavani, ronaldo will be a year older and we will once again need a mini rebuild from the next manager next season. How exactly is this a steadied ship?

The squad that he’s leaving behind is much better than the one that he inherited. His successor won’t have a massive rebuilding job to do…Ole did a good job until this season,so he deserves some credit for the progress that we”ve made over the last few years. Thanks for your service Ole,all the best for the future!

Ole always a legend in my heart and mind. Love the guy but it was time to go and let someone more qualified to take over and take us to a higher level. 2 or 3 new players and we are potentially as good as anyone. Let’s hope the next appointment is the right one.

There's very little to thank Ole for. Not a single trophy. Not any improvement in our play. The atmosphere around the club improved when he came in. Big deal, wouldn't be hard, it was insipid under Jose. Ole should never have stayed beyond the intended interim period. Not even sure why he was even interim tbh. He should have held his hands up long ago and walked. No sympathy whatsoever to be honest.

Is anyone here complaining about his playing days? What is this need of some fans to pat themselves on the back for being a supposedly superior fan because they are accepting of mediocrity and nepotism while others are not. He can be a great player who will always be remembered as being a key part of one of utd's greatest wins while also being a woefully incompetent manager who should never have been given this job. Those aren't mutually exclusive.

Probably something to do with the year on year progress of going from 6th to 3rd to 2nd prior to this season. Probably something to do with leaving a nucleus of good players, Maguire and Varane will be a good pairing when we put a proper goalkeeper behind them, AWB and Shaw are way out of form but have shown enough that say that is a good back four. McTominay came on leaps and bounds - granted he has regressed massively this season but he should be a good squad player for us in midfield, Fernandes coming in obviously speaks for itself and you would hope we will now see more from DVB as everybody knows the potential he has. I do appreciate we definitely need a couple of players in midfield though. As a front 3 the potential in Sancho/Greenwood/Rashford is fecking obscene and that's with Ronaldo and Cavani for them to feed off. So yeah, the ship was steadied and we don't need a massive rebuild to compete.

I just don't think Ole leaves us in a better position. He steadied the ship after Mourinho's soul-destroying shambles, sure, but look where we are now with all the signings he made. Bringing in Bruno and seeing the resurgence of Shaw aside (to which I'll give him full credit for), his tenure will be remembered as an abject failure if you put aside any form of sentimentality.

I thank him for being the man responsible for one of the best moments I've experienced as a United fan instead.

The way he was universally mocked by all but United fans across the globe might haunt him for a while.
He was getting mocked by fans of every club. His name was being chanted by Arsenal and Liverpool fans at Anfield. I've never seen anything like it.

I keep seeing "Thank you for Paris"

What the hell is wrong people. Where are your standards? You're supposed to be thankful to a manager that wins one away group game in the CL. Really? PSG weren't even a CL favorite back then, they couldn't even win L1. If that is one of your accomplishments managing United for 3 you're an utter failure. It's pathetic.

No thanks for the utter shit show I've been watching all season after Leeds, which is what, 15 games?

Relieved it's over now. He'll always be a legend for what he did as a player but not up to it management-wise.

We've an excellent squad now the next one. Hopefully the board make the right choice on the fourth attempt.

I feel so bad it's come to this. Really wanted him to succeed, or at least win a trophy with us as manager.
I thank him for lifting us out of a gloomy period and he's left us a better squad. Wish him all the best.

I think its the knock-out stage 3-1 rather than group game but I do agree the constant going on about that game is really bizarre and small time. It's not like it led to anything, we went out with a whimper in the next round and the league season died after it too. We didnt even play that well, they gifted us 2 goals through mistakes then a stupid handball at the death, they bottled it and we look back on it like its the best thing associated with the club in the past 8 years.

For what? In his first season he left us where Mourinho left us. Now we're even worse off despite the 500 million spent.

Absolute nonsense we are worse, you not remember the state of our team when Jose left, least whoever comes in got apparently a team that could win it all

Thank you for reaching the final

Our board are a bunch of wankers and hung Ole out to dry. It was obvious he was out of his depth ages ago but because Ole is a legend they have allowed hatred and resentment to fester in the fan base towards Ole . It should never have got to this , the owners should have admitted they have made a mistake and done the right thing in the summer. All the fans ire is now turned on Ole and not the owners who haven`t even got a plan in place for what to do next , Brendan Rodgers, do me a favour. It was clear Ole had gone as far as he could ages ago and should never have come to this but to see our fanbase namecalling , belittling and abusing one of our Legends for trying his best to do right for the club that he loves and Woodward , the Glazers , Arnold and all the other feckwit money men bumbling along from one disaster to the next makes me feckin sick . The current set of players must dread the thought of becoming a legend if this is how they get treated.

Thanks for trying your best Ole, it's regrettable that you fell so short of the standard required. At least we all love you again now though.
