Didn't realize he grew up in the Netherlands, his background and history at Utrecht with him definitely explains a lot when it come to ETH's apparent interest in him. Would be a real solid option in the squad especially if we sell Fred/McTominay

Onana, Holjund and Amrabat would be a very good window with your known constraints. Don't know why you would turn your nose up at him, ithink he will surprise many if you get him.

Hes a good player with many good qualities, but he’s not a viable back up for Casemiro, and that’s what we need. Both the stats and the eye test confirmed that he’s defensively abysmal in a deep position.
So who is a viable realistic back up
I already answered you in the other thread, ideally Tchouameni, if not, there are a range of cheaper options like Hojbjerg, Zakaria, Gravenberch (rumours of him not happy at Bayern). However, signing literally no one is still better than signing someone who doesnt fit the profile of the job he's asked to do, just look at Fred.

He's worse defensively than Fred, just look at his fbref, and we all saw what happened when EtH tried Fred at 6 at the beginning of last season.
He's a younger, more press resistant, more consistent with his passing version of Fred, but if rumour of EtH wanting to play with 2 8s in front of Casemiro is true then we already have Bruno, Mount and Eriksen for those 2 postions, and Bruno never gets injured. Meanwhile, Casemiro is 31 and still has no cover.
I think people misjudge Amrabat, if we are about to buy him it's not to rotate with Casemiro IMO. He is more like a deep playmaker responsible for progressing the ball from A to B rather than someone who provides defensive solidity between defensive and advanced line.
In terms of rotation options for Casemiro, I think Ezequiel Palacios from Leverkusen is an interesting player as they share a lot of similarities in terms of combativeness, ball recovering and defensive actions while still being technically solid.

Whitwell is confirming our interest in him but I'm not sure how strong his sources are this summer.
His narrative is mainly on the United side so I think if he says it is from sources at the club.
I read somewhere yesterday that ETH now prioritise the signing of this guy over a new #9. Seem true imo. Not a bad deal for the price quoted I think.
For the long term good, I'd rather get Amrabat in for £35Mish rather then spunk £70M+ on a totally raw striker. Will be a few windows before we glean challenge, so need to stop being ripped of in the market. Gofer good value deals.

Fred is positionally awful and the least press resistant player around so is constantly getting turned over in deep positions when he plays 6, the opposite of what you want from your deep lying midfielder. Amrabat is press resistant and from what I saw during the world cup, he was very positionally aware and mopped up everything in sight for Morocco. I'm not saying he's the next Verratti but there's plenty of reasons that he would succeed where Fred might fail. EtH is clearly trying to raise the technical floor of this squad and that straight swap would do it by quite a lot.
We need to jump in before west ham a club he would probably turn down anyway and then sell them mctominay.
