I could be wrong but I get the feeling United are holding out for Bale, although at the moment there appears to be very little chance of Real selling, but we just don't know what is happening behind the scenes.
If Van Gaal really wants a player as his number one choice, he's going to hang on as long as possible until that avenue is totally shut off. Bale can play as a striker, behind the striker, and on the wing, which is perfect for Van Gaal if Rooney is to lead the attack this season. The fact that Van Gall says he is not looking at a striker, would probably mean that he's not looking for an out and out striker, but a more versatile forward. Bale and Muller fit that category. Clubs, players, and agents may come out and say "no chance", but behind the scenes there's flirting and teasing about the 'what ifs' in any possible deals. Put an enticing thought in a player's head, and that thought could begin to grow more attractive as the weeks go on. This is the process that Van Gaal was talking about. I'm sure he has a player he really wants, and doesn't want to move on to the next options until he accepts it as a futile pursuit. Agents know that United can throw a lot of money into a deal, and they communicate to their clientsthe kind of interest clubs show in them. Then the temptation begins.
