Smashley Young

Young is supposed to be lightning quick and I remember him scoring lots of goals on the counter for Villa. We've never really seen this aspect of his game.

Obviously United have more possession than Villa but his pace should be on display more often.

You don't need stats to work out that Young rarely dribbles outside his man, his basic MO is to check back and cross with his right foot.

Which would be the MO for most right-footed wingers played on the left. I was taking issue with the inference that he can't or won't beat his man if the opportunity arises. Which is particularly fecking stupid with yesterday's obvious example still fresh in the mind.

Obviously, when he's low on form/confidence he's more likely to take the safe option. I don't have a problem with that, as it retains possession and keeps the move alive. Not to mention that even when he's playing badly/conservatively he's still capable of putting a great ball into the box by cutting back onto his right (e.g. the sitter Van Persie missed against your lot).

Well the impression I and others got is that we basically went and signed Young that Summer because we couldn't get Sanchez, fair enough he went to Barca so that was an impossible task at the end. Even now though you have the likes of Rodriguez, Isco, Muniain etc. I also would've taken Ben Arfa over Young.

The bold part is the issue for me. There's no doubt Young is a good player, and in terms of a squad player you won't find many better wingers out there, no doubt about that. The problem is that SAF doesn't seem to see him as a squad player, he actually seems to see him as a first choice. In fact since he joined the club, I can think of more times where he displaced Nani and Valencia in the team when fit than they displaced him. And obviously anyone with even a bit of football knowledge would agree they're better players than him.

The fee was astronomical given his contract situation, and supposedly the wages are rather healthy too. All this stuff doesn't add up to the idea of him being a "squad player", which is what irks me, because I don't personally think he is good enough, or ever will be good enough to be a nailed on first choice winger at this club, especially when you consider the wingers we've had under SAF before.

Put it this way, if Nani were to leave, which might happen, then there's a very good chance Young will be a guaranteed first choice winger here for a while, and I don't think that's the sort of standard we should aim for.

I've barely seen Rodriguez, Isco or Muniain so you'll have to allow me a bit of scepticism. They're all very young too. Isco had 4 professional appearances before we signed Young, Rodriguez just half a season for Porto. Muniain was 18. I wouldn't have expected any of them to come in and establish themselves in our first team as an orthodox winger.

Sanchez seems more comfortable as a wide forward, and if we were in for him but lost out then it's not really something you can have a dig at SAF for. It'd be like Liverpool moaning that KK should have bought Young and Jones. He tried, he couldn't. Also helps explains why we overpaid. Young is a better fit than Ben Arfa, who is exciting no doubt.

It's all a bit of a guessing game how SAF sees Young's role in the team. I'm struggling to remember a time when all three were fit to be honest. I think the current Nani situation might be clouding people's judgement a bit here, and that's a whole different matter. I certainly think he is better than he has shown so far for us, other than in flashes, and I don't think his first team potential should be dismissed.

I wouldn't be too pleased either if Nani was sold and we didn't bring in a replacement. It's good to have 3 wingers competing, plus other options from central players who can play out wide. I certainly don't think SAF sees Young as an untouchable first teamer. Far from it given our interest in Hazard and Lucas. If Nani is to leave I'd be surprised if we didn't sign a player that would easily get into the first team over Young on his current form.

That's just ridiculous, I can't believe you bothered with all that.

I found all that in five minutes, so it's not a big deal, I just wanted to show Pogue he is wrong.

And Pogue being Pogue once again, he will argue with you as much as you want, but when you put strong arguments in the debate, he runs away from the debate.

I thought he looked twice as lively when we switched him to the right, which is odd as he's played on the left for a long time now.

Yes he looked better on the right, which is just what we need. Someone far more dangerous on the right. Hopefully its more because he saw Valencia get the hook and realised he better do something to avoid the same fate

Was pointless until went to the right then started causing problems.

Those 20 minutes on the right are the best I've seen of him in a long time.

We could really do with a proper left winger.

Break the bank for Bale. It'll never happen, but would be wonderful to see.

That would just further compound our problem, we'd be even more 1 dimensional. If we do sell Nani and bring in a winger it needs to be someone who will take people on and come inside with the ball, not another player who's game is going down the line.

Yep.

It looks like we are going to lose Nani on the cheap - and then buy a player who is just like....Nani

Disagree completely we could sign Bale he'd be brilliant but the real crux of our team is and has been for a long time our Centre Midfield. We have Carrick who is a regular then no one else who is trusted. Fletcher is way off (understandable but we should have cover) Giggs and Scholes (who are way past their best and can't to a defensive job and this gets showed up at times) Cleverley (still to prove himself fully with UTD) Anderson (not trusted, fitness issues) Powell (Not ready yet) this is unbelievable for a club as big as UTD. It needs addressed as we have the best collection of strikers in Europe. Why we never signed Dembele for £11m is beyond me as we were calling the shots with Fulham wanting Berbatov he has everything our midfielders lack and would not have broken the bank and would have been a regular and an improvement to our midfield.

Midfield is far from perfect but the wingers atm are the real problem for me. Only nani provides any versatility in attack, we need to mix it up which hopefully we'll get if nani and kagaw get back in the team. Like I said bale would just make us more 1 dimensional and is unneccessary when we already have Valencia.

Why Fergie persists in playing him i'll never know. He rarely beats his man anymore and can't even play a simple ball. Waste of space if you ask me.

He's a very useful player to have in the squad if you ask me. I was delighted when we signed him. I hadn't anticipated Fergie would use him week in week out though. I don't think he's good enough to be a first teamer. Especially when it's someone like Valencia on the other side who's also a hard worker and no frills.

I really really hope we can resolve whatever issue it is we have with Nani. When he's fit he should start and whomever is in the best form between Young and Valencia should start on the other side.

Wont be wonderful at all. I'd never like to see Valencia and Bale as our 2 wingers.

Add to that the price he'd cost and how long SAF is likely to be here, it'd be very unfair on the next man in charge which is why am pretty sure SAF wouldnt do it.

What a joke. Comes on and all he can contribute is a dive. I hope someone will take him off us.

He has looked terrible since the game after he returned.

Lets hope it is just a bad patch, (I'm sure it is)

Still think he is an important squad player

To be fair to him he has been out for few weeks so it is natural for him to take time to get back to being average..

Get the ball pass it backwards.
Repeat X 5
Dive
Good corner.

Brutal.
Never been good enough for Man Utd. Not good enough for Man Utd. Never will be good enough for Man Utd. I wince whenever I see his name.

Exactly. What does he offer? He's horrific. Nowhere anywhere near good enough to play for us. If Nani returns and Young plays ahead of him then I give up.

He's out form and his diving doesn't help him at all, I think he gets an unfair rep from United fans but he definitely needs to pick it up sharpish.

Maybe you're right but by God i loathe him as a footballer. He's a cowardly, diving one trick pony who made his career from looking good against shite teams. The definition of a flat track bully at his best. Now he's not even a downhill bully, against a field of kids, with no legs or eyes.
