Smashley Young

Excellent player. He's a bit too eager to cut inside on his right foot when he's out on the left flank, but he does it really well though and gets past his man most of the time.

Rooney obviously loves playing with him.

I thought the same thing about the cutting in.

Chelsea were very prepared for it and nullified him alot I thought.

Anyone noticed how he's becoming more adventerous with his passing ever since he joined us? I watched him quite a bit at Villa and he never really showed the range of passing he has done with us, and his one touch play is also better than I thought it was.

I guess it's down to a change up in style, Villa were always quite direct.

Yep, Bosingwa was waiting for it every time. He still managed to cut in though on numerous occasions. He also started shifting further to a running evra which was great cause Evra was getting forward easily. Their link up play is great to watch too.

I thought he was excellent again today. He virtually never loses the ball, and though he may not do anything amazing with it very often he's always looking to try something. Very clever footballer, also very unselfish.

If I had one wish it would be that he'd, er, for want of a better phrase, attack the space a bit more when he's put in behind the defence on the left with a lot of room to move into.

I'm sure he'll add more unpredictability to his game.Right now defenders more or less know he wants to cut inside but if he starts to diversify his game and use his left foot (which is very good) then he'll be harder to read and stop

If Evra could cross a ball like Young (or even cross a ball full stop) we would score about a thousand goals a game, give or take. So yeah I have to agree- it would be nice if Young found himself in those positions inside the full back (ooh err) that Evra finds himself in dozens of times a game.

I'm loving him in our team. He "looks" a United player. We love our flying wingers here and he's just another one to the long list. I love his attitude too. He's basically loving being on this stage which isn't the case for a lot of new signings. Very lucky that Jones and Young have taken to this challenge so easily.

Reckon he still needs to work on his final decision making and ball. He looks a player that will score quite a few and create quite a few if he gets that right which I'm sure he will in the next few months.

I'll put my hand up and admit that I didn't really see the point of signing him when we did get him but happy to be proven wrong.

It didn't show much in his time at Villa as he seemed to play more of a byline hugging winger type role. But in his last season through the middle for them and for England he started showing this passing range that I didnt know he'd be capable of. His link-up with Evra was brilliant today.

I thought he'd do well for us but he's been an absolute revelation.

He is almost a perfect winger for us. Good pace and skills, effective, rarely make any mistake, plays a fluid game, and most importantly, good link-up play with teammates. I felt he has offered an noticable improvement from our wing play from last year , and I would say he is definitely our no.1 choice of left winger spot.

He is also a fine example of being a better player with better teammates around him.

He showed his range of passing last season at Villa when he was playing in the hole behind the striker. A number of outstanding throughballs

Is this lad injured then or not?

Have seen nothing official but Pogue saying he was after the England match.

If so, whats the latest

From what I heard he had some strapping put on his knee after he was subbed off, but it seems it was just precautionary and apparently he said after the match that he's fine.

Been kind of anonymous lately.

I guess we do see this happen often as players who were key players at their former clubs try to assimilate into a squad where they no longer feel they have that status.

Hope someone flips that "I'm a MUFC player now, dammit" switch for him, gives him back some of that swagger he was showing early season.

Struggled today but Kelly was very good and by my reckoning Liverpool's best player, Young never really got in behind him but to be fair to Young he didn't get great ball from the midfield today. He needs to move the ball a bit quicker when he can't take on his man, I've noticed how he tends to dawdle on the ball and lose it when an easy pass is available.

Consistency was always the big issue with him at Villa, one great game 4 or 5 no shows.

I see. Ah well, then. So we're due a hat trick. Good to know.

Read an article where former managers/teammates made him seem almost too humble. Thought he might have problems asserting himself within any squad, let alone one filled with top-tier talent.

You have to give credit to Martin Kelly TBH. Very good player.

Kelly marked Young really well which isn't the easiest to do in such a big match. I think Kelly will be in the reckoning for the England RB slot.

Agreed and even then there were one or two moments early in the second half where Young went inside and managed to get shots off. I was surprised to see him subbed cos he was better than Giggsy today. Love Ryan but his short passing today was awful.

Too often his first instinct is to go backwards with the ball. I'd like to see him being more positive. Giggs gave Kelly a tougher time in 15 minutes than Young did all day.

Welbeck was basically his only outlet today, so it wasn't surprising to see Young struggle to make an impact going forward. He should've stayed on when Rooney and Nani came on IMO, I reckon he would've found it easier to make an impact after that.

He ain't going to be picked ahead of Richards, Smalling and even Jones if the central defense is packed.

Easily his worst performance for United. Had a woeful first half where he was constantly outmuscled (at times outnumbered) and couldn't hold on to the ball. You got the feeling SAF had a word with him at half-time and told him he'd have 15 mins. to make an impact. Imposed himself in the second-half, but guess it was too little too late.

I think Kelly had a lot of support from his team mates. Liverpool worked really hard to restrict our attacking players' space.

The big problem for us was that we never committed enough men to support the likes of Young and Welbeck.

Young barely made one run towards Liverpool's goal all day long. He was constantly shielding the ball and moving back to the half way line.

Ineffectual - but tactics dictated that.

The game plan and personnel used was designed to stop Liverpool playing. Hardly a game where he would would excel in the attacking third. I'd not read too much into Young's form based on this game. He looks every bit a United player. In fact it seems he has grown up at Old Trafford

Apart from his 1st couple of games I dont think he has been overly impressive. Still not fully settled in IMO. He wasnt great for Villa last season either.

Would like to see Valencia back in the side and put Nani on the left

I think he needs the realisation check of a few games on the bench. He started really well for us, played almost every game and got great reviews.

Lets stick him on the bench and play Valencia and Nani on the wings for a few games. That will make him realise he has to turn up for EVERY game.

He's been relatively anonymous since probably the Chelsea game. Mind you the whole team has been pretty mediocre since then.

He had an excellent start, works hard and has settled in quickly, but he just looks like Ashley Young to me? You know, the same one that was playing at Villa all those years without ever dominating a game at Anfield. Why would he start now?...especially as part of an unfimiliar line up which wasn't really functioning at all across the whole midfield.

I'd like to see Valencia get a run but that'd mean moving Nani to the left or dropping him, and he's been our best forward player so far this season.

Yeah that's why wingers are dead (see Lennon, Johnson et al). You need AMs who contribute every game (see Silva, Mata et al).

United still use wingers and win the league nearly every year. Perhaps everyone else just has the wrong idea?

I don't get this new fad for pointless players who'll look pretty but take five touches of the ball to basically do nothing. Though Silva's an exception as he's far from pointless and probably the best player in the league.

Young is a good player but in games where the opposition closes you down fast and with numbers he struggles.
Players like Silva and Mata (or Modric) on the other hand have this ability where it seems they've got tons of time one ball in very tight situations and I would've liked if we'd went for that kind of player in the summer.
