Smashley Young

Jeez we are a tough crowd. Most wingers are in some way inconsistent. And that 1000% includes Nani and Valencia.

Of course, I'm just pointing it out.

I've been delighted with his input, but like the rest of the team his form has gone a bit off the boil lately.

Nani's been the better player for me this season. Valencia's been devoid of any confidence, and has been playing shite. Partly as a right back though which shouldn't really be surprising.

Fair one. Just think its a bit harsh, thought he looked lively early on against City. Brought down a few times in dangerous areas and then we stopped getting the ball to him.

Nani has been the best so far, but he was the worst against City.

The thing is, we rely so much on our wingers to create.

City, for example, rely more on Nasri/Silva, who both operates more freely, more like attacking midfielders. They are more consistant in what they provide in terms of goals, assists and consistantly good games.

Yup, but even before that, he's had his games where he's been anonymous. Off the top of my head, I can't remember him doing much against Spurs, Bolton, Liverpool or Stoke.

So far he's been a bit of a "every other game"-player. He didn't set the world alight against Chelsea either, or Basel, save for the assist for Smalling and the vital, late equalizer against Basel.

He hasn't been as spectacular as the start of the season, but then that couldn't last. He managed to get himself a few assists in recent games, more than some players can say.

But I'll agree he seems to be less imposing recently, before he was always on the ball and getting it back inside to Rooney and Welbeck regularly, he hasn't stood out as much since Chelsea.

It could of course be as simple as saying we haven't controlled the games as well as we did at the start of the seasonn, and we haven't had the same speed about our passing - which means, less time for the wingers on the ball.

We didn't control the games well at the start of the season - we certainly weren't in any kind of control during the first 60 minutes against Spurs or throughout the 90 minutes against Chelsea - but there was a massive difference in the speed of the passing, yes. And there was more fluidity. Since Cleverley's injury we seem to have reverted to last season's rigid, functional side with the intent of getting the ball out wide as soon as possible and then wait for the cross.

I doubt signing a creator like Silva would solve this though: look at Rooney, majority of the time he drops deep only to then switch the play to the flanks almost immediately. It seems to be a tactical instruction, one that makes us slightly predictable. I'd love to know how many goals Hernández would score if we sometimes used through balls, for instance. Rooney is supposed to be capable of that in a deep-lying role but he isn't doing much of it, he always looks to the flanks.

I thought he was disappointing tonight. I also think he was a touch unlucky at times.

You'd swear he was lacking match fitness and playing out of position wouldn't you.

That's suggesting the reason for being dire, rather than saying that he wasn't. All I know, is that it certainly wasn't a good performance.

Was crap too one dimensional, offside alot and diving about like a bitch. Corners were woeful as was most of his distribution.

Not going to entertain your wummery after this post.

He wasn't one dimensional, he mixed it up well, actually. Some decent dribbles, short and long passing, some decent crosses and some decent runs. Nothing spectacular (bar one through ball) and a lot of sloppiness but one dimensional is a word you use to describe Kevin Davies. Young's performance today was still more dynamic than that.

Offside a lot because he's not used to the position.

Diving? He got kicked to pieces. At one point Maxi just smacked him in the back of the leg to the point where the commentators said they heard it from the gantry.

Corners were poor, granted. Who took better ones today though?

Distribution was ok, better than I'd expect from someone who wasn't match fit playing in a new position any way.

So all players have to be on top of their game at all times, tad unrealistic that.

He didn't have the best of nights (he wasn't dire by any stretch of the imagination), but as I've said, there are plenty of reasons for it.

Very poor tonight, once he get match fit again we'll see better of him, but this was frustrating.

Where did I say that "all players have to be on top of their game at all times"?!?

He was fairly poor - there are valid reasons why this was the case but it still happened.

So you're agreeing with what I said but just trying to make some weird vague point then? Grand, whatever.

Don't rate Ashley Young at all but a bit harsh to be having such a go at him when he's just come back from injury.
Also, he should never play in that position again, ever, like seriously, ever.

One dimensional is running in straight lines with little imagination that Young does time and time again. When he's on the wing his idea of a trick is to check back onto his right foot and cross it.

Nano and Berbatov the only plus points tonight, Fletch and Carrick did alright in spells. Young was woeful, ( I actually quite like Young btw).

He lacks the quality to play through the middle. Please Fergie do not try this again.

Carrick was superb, what game were you watching?

Evra was also amazing.

Thought he was o.k. I think he lacks the knowledge to play there rather than the ability. Not every player is a natural in every position, that one should really go without saying.

Played like he was coming back from a layoff, the touch and weight in the cross and pass will come with more game time. Patience people, patience.

I think he looked a bit rusty which is understandable. He grew in to the game but was a bit sloppy here and there. It's good to have him back though and I'm sure he'll find his form again soon.
