Smashley Young

2 goals, couple of assists, one player sent off (should have been 2), and numerous others booked for trying and failing to tackle him. Impressive.

He won the maximum fouls and/or penalties last season.

He's going to win us lots of important fouls this season :D

Where's Lailani? I'm sure she went a bit mental over this Young signing.

She will only show up here on the day that Young messes up. There are a couple of posters who are usually restrained on new signings but went mental over Young's signing and even went ahead to say that they see him as the third winger on the depth chart.
Now with the start he has made, I really see Valencia as the third winger.

Change of subject.
I never realized that he was hard to defend against. If you take the outside, he will go inside, if you give him space on the outside, he will put in a curler.
We may have a candidate for PLPOTY on our hands.

Having seen Sanchez play for Barca today, and at the pace he played at, I think we chose the right player. This isn't a slight on Sanchez, but I think Young suits us and the League better than Sanchez would have would have.

My only question mark over Young is whether he can translate these performances onto the European stage. He has the perfect transitional platform in that our group is piss easy, but its whether he can adapt to the different pace of the game in Europe, principally the knockout rounds...

He looks born to play in this team. Oozes class, he's upped his game and looks like a player whos been playing with us for years. Whats even better is that Young seems to compliment Rooney perfectly.

He's a dream signing really, extremely impressive start for Young.

Why, is 26 old now? Or have we struggled for quality out wide in the last few years

If we'd signed Alexis Sanchez and he had this start, we'd be calling him a world beater.

Young deserves a lot of credit, and I don't see any reason to think it won't continue. I don't think Pedro or Silva could have started the season any better for us.

You're assuming im assuming.

edit: cringe at self

Just rewatching the game now. I think the contrast between both teams is summed up by Ashley Young.

Just as keen to cover his fullback, as get forward. Right now I've it paused at 78 mins, we're winning 6-2 and he's just intercepted that Chamberlain's run close to the box.

Then you look at Walcott leaving his inexperienced teammate exposed. Not only that, but instead of guiding him he lambasted a kid is barely out of the lower leagues to compensate his failings infront of millions.

No airs or graces, nothing fancy. Just an honest, direct, talented team player.

Happy to say, in the newbs, I was massively critical. I hope he keeps making me look like a clueless cnut

He's definately had a great start. Exceeded my initial expectations anyway. Seems to have slotted in nicely. Long may it continue.

Good start, and may he thrive.

Worried about the yellows, though. Two already in three games.

Yeah the one against Arsenal was unnecessary. He did not need to rush to the linesman and complain about the penalty.

Am I the only one who wants to see him on the right for a bit to see what his delivery is like from here? It's going to be good isn't it? Better than him cutting back onto his right from the left wing. Nani can play on the left, it seems the obvious choice to me.

My uncle made me laugh, he was harping on that "we dont need Young, why is even being considered etc"

3 games in, he goes "Ashley Young looks a lot better playing for United than he ever did for Villa"

Fans eh

To be fair, he does look better than he ever did for Villa.

Might have something to do with the fact that opponents don't see him as the main threat; they are more focused on Nani, Rooney, etc., so he's got more space and he thrives on it.

Or just the fact that he's now playing with the likes of Rooney over donkey's named Heskey.

I'd say its the competition for places. What he's done so far hes always had the talent to do but for the last couple of seasons he hasnt been doing it on a week to week basis. That was fine for Villa he was still going to be their best player. But at United it only takes a couple of off performances and he might find himself out of the team and watching two other wingers playing well every week. So he looks keen to snatch his chance

Yeah, it probably boosts his morale knowing he's actually got a chance to pull off a one-two with the main striker

Most players get better at Utd. Whether it's down to the coaches, players around them, fans etc.

To be fair, I wouldn't say most of our signings in the past years improved since joining.

Ultimately, if they have the skill, mentality, and drive to improve, they will.

I mentioned it in another thread but his run's off the ball and the way he check's in and out makes so much space for us. The pass where we split Arsenal's defence that time that Walcott told Jenkinson off was possible because Young checked in and dragged Jenkinson in with him. There's a lot of times when he check's in and then goes back out and lets Evra play the ball over the top. He is kind of like Park with his movement but with more quality on the ball.

Bellion, Bebe, Djemba-Djemba, Smith, Miller, Kleberson, Obertan, Dong, Rossi, Pique, Tosic. There's a huge list out there.

Rossi and Pique improved at United. So did Tosic. Bebe has already improved. I don't know what your point is btw

You can make an argument for every one of those players (except maybe Liam Miller) that in leaving United, they ended up making a better career for themselves at a better club than they were at before they joined United.

been a top signing for us, has been very good in all 4 games so far. delighted he is bringing his england form of last season to us.

Djemba didn't really play at high level after his departure but he had no ability whatsoever so it wasn't really that surprising. Dong never played for a proper club before but he didn't play for one when we bought him either so he cannot complain, how he ended up at United for £2m or something in the first place is mind boggling.

Opinions on him today? Not seen many giving him votes as one of our best player today, but I thought he did very well once again.

Looked a bit tired at times at Bolton, but Fergie rested him in midweek and he was back to his good form again today. Watching him at United, it seem like he's played with us for years, very very good signing so far.

Excellent player. He's a bit too eager to cut inside on his right foot when he's out on the left flank, but he does it really well though and gets past his man most of the time.

Rooney obviously loves playing with him.

He is going to be a brilliant player for us. With him and Nani on the wings, we can get in behind anyone. And then there's Valencia. Things are looking great.
