Smashley Young

I know a couple of Villa fans and they were gutted to lose Young...they also laughed at the amount Liverpool paid for Downing.

Chuckle.

Yep. I got chatting with a villa fan on a night out when the rumours were flying around on champions league final weekend. He was adamant that Young would add quality to any side he went to.

He's slotted in here like its nothing. And he'll only improve.

The one thing he has over Nani (possibly a bit harsh) & especially Valencia is a devastating finish. He'll get games in the hole too when Rooney needs a rest.

Just hope he keeps working hard, keeps his feet on the ground and stays away from the webcam.

He has definitely upped his game now he is at United. Playing with world class players all around him has given him the confidence to express himself on a whole new level. A regular place in the England lineup is a cert now. I'm loving the English connection in the core of the United squad now by the way!

I think the best part about him is that we haven't had to alter our style in the slightest to fit him in, he's just slotted straight in. In that withdrawn winger/wide attacking midfield role that was created for Giggs and brought so much joy out of Evra, he's seemed really comfortable in it. Probably helps that he spent so much time playing centrally too, and obviously his linkup passing really thrives in it.

Where's Lailani? I'm sure she went a bit mental over this Young signing.

You're not serious? Nani;who showed he can finish with either foot and deliver a good cross.

i'd say the advantage is that he's developed a good understanding with Rooney in such a short time.Whether he goes on to be a devastating finisher time will tell but he hasn't made a bad start on the basis of those two goals

I'm completely so-so about this signing too. I'd love it if Ashley goes on to be a great player for us. He's got great stat's and can be a match changer. He's just not someone who I every thought, 'I'd love him to be a Utd Player'. But it does do one thing, it strengthens our young English player contingent, and with rule changes possibly afoot that can be no bad thing!

I'll get my coat then!

Brilliant today Ashley. Please continue to make me look like an idiot!

The first goal was too good!! He knew as soon as he hit it that it was in, if you watch the replay as soon as it left his boot he was off celebrating .

The first goal was an absolute peach.

R1 and Circle.

His goals looked like Solius' free kick on FIFA. Perfect.

Early days but he's doing a pretty good job of winning me over already.

I never realised how much work he gets through during a game. He's more or less always making a run somewhere. He's not got that awareness of where his team mates are yet either, but he seems well suited to our style.

The one thing I've noticed is that he takes a lot of punishment - he's taken some real nasty tackles in these first few games. He just keeps going. He does come across as someone that is on the edge of losing it at times and may pick up too many yellows as the season goes.

I have to hold my hand up and admit he has surprised me in the way he has went up a couple of levels at least, he has been brilliant from the get go with us, and today was his best performance yet, two stunning strikes and involved in most of our best play. His understanding with Rooney may also bode well for England.

He wasn't the only one.

Yeah, the commentator also seemed to call goal before it actually went in.

He just really seems to have found his level. He's been brilliant for Villa at times but last season in particular he got a lot of stick. His free kicks were inconsistent and at times he seemed a little uninterested. Players react differently to this kind of situation - some flourish as the best player in a weaker team, while others belong at a better team where they can link up with others as talented as them.

Young definitely seems to be one of the latter - his crosses are finding runs, the midfielders are giving him service and he has the freedom to express himself at a club where he's not laden with expectations to always be the star man. I've personally always been a fan and felt a little bemused at how he struggled to break into the England team despite being arguablly the best English winger. But his seamless transition into a top, top player has surprised me, and long may it continue!

I wasn't overly excited when we signed him. Now I am. Love the way he plays like he's been in the team for years, that Red shirt sits very well on him indeed.

might be pushing it to call it his trademark goal but I have seen him score those for Villa. Almost Beckham-like.

The weird thing about his signing is that if you go back to the time we had Cristiano still at the club and he was making noises about playing elsewhere, the one player who seem to be mentioned by alot of people as a potential replacement was Ashley Young.

I have to say despite always beleiving him to be a very good player who would be an excellent addition to our squad I never quite credited him with the level of football he is currently producing however he was producing a similar level for Villa about 2 seasons after signning for them and it just goes to show how players can sometimes stagnate if they stay in one place too long.

Thats not to say he wasn't easily Villa best player when he left but he had fallen someway below the level of football he was producing around about his second season there.

I'm now reminded of Aidy Boothroyd saying "this lad can become anything he wants in the game"[paraphrase] shortly before selling him to Villa from Watford.

Don't get me wrong I still don't quite credit him with Ronaldo's level, but it just goes to show how caf opinion on a player can change quite rapidly.

That's harsh now. Nani and to a lesser extent Valencia are both very good finishers but the former isn't as consistent with his shots from outside the box as Young and the latter doesn't really cut inside enough to get enough chances.

I certainly wouldn't rate Young as a better player than either, but he has the advantage over them in terms of his adaptability to the left hand side of the pitch and will probably play more than either of them this season. I'm delighted with how well he's fitted in already though but for some reason I sort of expected it. He's a Man Utd type player through and through and it was a great purchase by Fergie.

I was one who didnt really think he was a bad signing because we were solid on the wings already, but wow has he made an impact.
the options our midfielders now have is play to Rooney who will control it and do something with it, play to Young who will control it and draw defenders or dribble past them, or Nani who will..well who the hell knows.

this makes us so lethal because there is always one of them to take the ball and create, so all Cleverly and Anderson has to do is get them quality balls.

i'm impressesd with Young.

2 goals, couple of assists, one player sent off (should have been 2), and numerous others booked for trying and failing to tackle him. Impressive.

The best thing about him is that his natural position is left wing. That hasn't been true of any of our players since Giggs in his prime.

In his Watford days he played on the right wing, set up a goal against us from there, he's learnt to play left wing

And it looks to be his natural position to cut inside and curl it into the far corner. 'Natural' doesn't mean 'first'.
