Smashley Young

It's quite funny. He's lucky in that almost every time he has clearly given the ball away the camera has been just returning from highlights.

Feel for him. His confidence must be non-existent.

Not a lot of people are expecting him to play well, he's pressure free.

Because Nani is more creative, and would've scored one of those chances. Talented creative players get more leeway. That's how it works.

If I was Moyes, I'd like to see if we could play the whole second half pretending the side of the pitch with Young and Buttner on it didn't exist. At the very least it'd be an interesting training exercise.
Yeah. Nani never misses.

How many more goals/assists does he need to reach Cider's prediction of 30+ this season btw?

Waldner's comment is one of the most balanced on here.

Fans have to have a whipping boy, and as Rooney's in form, and Fellaini's not around, Young auto becomes it!

Thanks. I just don't understand it. Well I do, he's had plenty of time and chances to turn this form around, but sometimes people just go through patches of being and playing like arse. For whatever reason he's not picked up his form but I just don't think that is because he's a terrible footballer. I think he's severely lacking in confidence and needs time away from the pitch to build and pick himself back up. Putting a player in a cauldron of hate (excuse the dramatic phrase but that's pretty much what it is when Young is played at the moment) when they're playing terrible is not the way to bring them back to top form.

With Buttner and Young in the team we basically played without left flank

He actually played well tonight, but that wont stop me shouting at the tv every time I see his face

Played better tonight than he has for a while imo. If that chip had gone the other side of the post, or even hit the post and come back for Rooney I could see him getting a decent amount of praise.

Despite some of the comments above, I thought Buttner and Young linked up well, a lot better than Rafael and Janujaz!

If Buttner had found a decent cross we'd have had good success down that side.

Not bad all things considered. But he should have done better with those two chances. Not even getting them on target was criminal.

The situation hasn't changed though. He clearly needs games to find his confidence again and he isn't getting them here.

2nd half was pretty good; especially the link-up with Buttner. First half was woeful.

He was decent for his standards... Still nowhere near good enough. First half he was shit, second half he put in 1 or 2 good crosses until he got subbed off. He really shouldn't be at a club like United though, send him back to Villa.

He didn't play well tonight at all...people are just scratching for positives. He had 2 great chances and fecked them both, while his delivery was average.

He's a waste of a squad space and the wages he is on. Never remotely been good enough.

Well that's just not true.

Bang on. People's expectation levels are so low atm that a few successful passes now equals a 'good' performance. He was dogshit tonight.

Well that's just not true.

It is though, at his very best he's a good squad player. But then, how often is he at his best though? 2-3 times a year? Most other times he's awful. He's nowhere near good enough for a team like United.

Improved after RVP came on.

People go overboard when it comes to him, no surprise. He did alright, I thought. He's in that category right now where people get enraged whenever someone points out that he didn't do too badly, because God's knows we should expect more, etc. Like Fellaini. Space goat syndrome.

Take a look at some of Shaktars Brazilian playmakers and see the difference between them and Young. I bet they are on half the wages but they are a lot better at football than him.

Sam is right, the expectaion level is too low. If that constitutes a good performance for an £18 million Manchester United player then standards really are in freefall.

The vast majority of professional players perform much better when playing regularly. Even good players can struggle when limited to 20 mins here and there and then the occasional start. I don't rate Young at all but his performance was about what you'd expect from someone who has been out of the picture.

Personally I think we would be better off if Young's playing time was given to Nani as right now neither of them are getting enough mins on the pitch to find their peak level.

Really mixed on this performance. It wasn't a great performance but it was an improvement on an otherwise atrocious season, so I was pleased for him in that regard. Should have scored, maybe even twice and that would have changed the mood but as a squad player in which he is, can't have too many complaints with his contribution.

Didn't do anywhere near enough to get back into the frame and never will in my opinion but he wasn't as bad as he has been.

Better than usual but that is not saying much. Should have passed on the first chance when Rooney was completely free, while should have scored on the second. Still I think that he should be a non-option for us, we have better players who deserve those minutes he get.

Average performance at best but that's the standard he is at now. Would like to think that was an opportunity from Moyes to put him in the shop window.

I'm not a fan of Young, but to play devils advocate he's had feck all football recently so you have to expect a bit of rustiness.

Still think at best he's only a half decent squad player for a club like Utd, and I think we could do a lot better than him.

Is Wellbeck injured? Would have thought tonight offered a great chance to get him a game to get him back to something resembling match fitness. Surprised he wasn't even on the bench.

He was alright. I dont like being too harsh on players when they havent started in a while. It disrupts your rhythm. It was weird seeing people lambasting him for things that really werent that bad. I swear our support of players is more about the reputation than how they're actually doing sometimes. Football fans. Odd bunch we are.

He was one of our best players when he was on the pitch despite missing two chances. I don't like and never have but some people are just so blind with Young hate that they can't see anything positive.

In the match day thread today at the start of the second half immediatly after Young puts a corner in that bounces in line with the frint post but no one attacks and a free kick that's cleared in the six yeard box in line with the back post (2 really good balls in) we get posts like this;

Young deliveries, urgh.

Utterly blind to reality and just out to slag and abuse a player. feck me Ainu, Young does enough wrong without having to make up stuff and slag the good things he does.

He had a woeful 1st half but he picked it up towards end & carried on in the second half till he got subbed. He should have scored from the lob but the second chance wasn't entirely his fault. Rooney's pass to play him in was a bit short & very poor.

In the second half, his combination with Buttner was the only route to attack & they sent in some dangerous crosses. I feel he was unlucky to get subbed. Janujaz should have made way instead of Young but as soon as Young left, the right side started to click as well.

In a nutshell, he had a 6/10 performance. Much better than the 2/10 he's been having all season. We should keep playing him till he gets it right.

Waste of space again. I'll probably get slagged off for such an unqualified opinion, but that's what it looked like to me. His one good touch all game was when he took the ball down ahead of the defender, and that's just not enough of a contribution to displace either Valencia or Nani.
