Smashley Young

Needs to cut out the diving, but apart from that he's been alright. Better than Valencia on the other wing. He still needs to be a bit more decisive when taking on a man, but overall he's been alright to good.

Looking back on that "dive" I can see why the yellow was given. Still happy enough with him going down there.

Other than that involved in good moves and got an assist that helped break them down. Done his job.

Ridiculous. It was a pathetic attempt at cheating. If he has to do it - and clearly he does - then at least be subtle about it for feck's sake. The defender didn't even make a challenge.

He's been good though.

The ridiculous dive aside he's been decent.

His diving is an embarrassment.

Don't hate the player hate the game.

Throughout the Premier League and across Europe people dive to win. If you're playing cards and everyone else is gaming the table best to game too if you don't wanna be a loser. Weren't a dive for the pen either.

Match day thread vultures have been hard on young today.

For me one of our better players in the half and has been involved a lot.

The sniping has reached idiotic levels.

He doesn't improve on his current reputation, it's annoying when he dives because it's pathetic. He has been decent, but he hasn't been one of our better players. He's not taking his man on - instead, he's using his trademark cut into right and cross the ball trick, which hasn't been successful at all.

Leaving aside that embarrassing dive of his earlier on in the half he has been a busy man, made a few threatening runs and sent in one or two nice crosses, basically a thorn in the side of Palace's defence. He's playing well.

Been one of our better players this half.

But his diving has been an embarrassment. Even Nani and Ronnie in their prime days of diving didn't dive this much. Embarrassing.

Try to discuss his performance rather than the dive.

It was a dive though, but many players would have tried similar IMO

He's played OK but Zaha or Januzaj would have performed just as well with the added benefit of having loads more potential. His inclusion in our teams are pointless

He's so poor on the ball it's not even worth moaning about to be honest.

We've gven him the ball in space countless times today. I mean he's had more room than I can ever remember one of our wingers beng given, and he's wasted it every single time. Bafflingly so on a number of occasions. It's hard to see any of our other forward players being that wasteful with that much space because I doubt teams would be willing to give them the space in the first place. They'd get punished very quickly if they did.

I really don't have an issue with the effort he puts in but he's just nowhere near good enough to be in a United side...at least not until we've slipped to being at Everton/Liverpool sort of standard.

If he crosses the ball to where no one is under no pressure one more time I'm going to punch someone in the face.

Do you not think he impeded his movement?

He's been ok, but neither of him or Valencia should get much praise so far imo, this is the minimum they should be doing against a poor crystal palace game, in fact tbh whilst they are taking on players a bit more, which is understandable given they've got a fair bit of room to work with, the crossing has still been quite poor, not really picking anyone out, just floating it in.

Valencia? He's been shit. Young's at least had his moments of looking dangerous.

His diving is a real joke and always has been even before he joined us. The way he almost does the splits in mid air every time, he is obviously shameless. Reputation goes before him and that is completely his fault.

I genuinely think people on here watch different games to the rest of the Universe.

If any of our other forward players had been given the space he's been given today we'd be about 4-0 up (or more likely we'd have gone a goal up very quickly and Palace would have needed to change tactically). At one point Carrick played a slow 80 yard pass to him and he still had tme to just control it and stroll into the area, unchallenged.

He's been unforgivably wasteful. Even the penalty was almost entirely down to Palace fumbling around...he was probably going to cut back outside and cross the ball off the pitch again.

Young copied Ronaldo with that dive.

I thought it was straight out of the Ronaldo "If they're going to touch me I'll exaggerate every bit of contact" gamebook.

Would prefer him to stay on his feet, but I don't think it was a yellow still. If Ashley Cole didn't get one against us than that's ten times less of a dive.

Yeah I agree he's been better than Valencia but I still don't think it's worthy of much praise, Palace are poor and whilst he's running at people which is good to see that's the minimum we should be expecting. Linked up pretty well with Evra, but again that's never been a problem with any of the wingers, it's them putting in a good ball consistently and neither have done that yet.

I just remember Ronaldo did it against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup in 2007 against Woodgate. I think it was in the 80th min or something with it being 0-0. He did just what Young did today.

He's becoming a controversial player for this team. I don't think he's in position to risk diving while he clearly got problems with his fitness and form.

Very mixed up impressions, so far.

He's been okay. Hate the constant diving. Not good enough to be a starter for us though. And I'm just not a huge fan of him.

The yellow was a penalty too for me. He totally stuck his leg out, but in modern football if you earn the penalty like that it's normally given. Young's reputation cost us that one.

Gotta give credit to the lad, he has been given another crack at first team football and he has dived right into it. What a sight it is to see his quality descending on the team.

There he goes again. Acres of space, Rooney free outsde of him...closes up his own space then waits until Rooney's offside. Then passes it.

I mean for feck sake.

Third best player on the pitch today for us. Muppets gunna muppet.

Not sure I agree with that, his final ball has been terrible. For a player who's specialty is crossing, he's managed one decent ball in the entire first half. Reacted well for the penalty though. But there's good reason to complain about his performance tbh.

It's a sign of how poor our wingers have been that Young's performance today has been seen as good/encouraging. People praise individual contributions from Young during a game and then question why it is we look so stale in an attacking sense. He's been ok-ish, but his movement and level of ambition is just not good enough.

We are absolutely crying out for Nani, to be honest. It's going to be frustrating if he doesn't get a chance or doesn't return to form.

Edit: Looking better now.

Young has improved massively. He's been our best player in the second half. Played a great ball to Evra and switched play to Valencia. Most of our attacks are flowing down his side, but what's concerning is that Rooney hasn't done much and that he should do more to create chances...

Was a huge threat against palace, but I really don't see him improving much more and causing a threat to the biggest teams. Hope im wrong!

Was better in the second half, against ten men though and they were already weaker on his side, but pretty good performance, bad dive aside. Now needs to try and play like this against a better team and still needs to work on picking someone out with a cross rather than just putting the ball in.

Just compare his performance to Janzuaj and you know there is something up in terms of quality. Kagawa v Janzuaj on the left wing and Nani v Zaha on the right, I'd be more than happy with that.
